tayo42··on Home alone: Remote work, isolation, and mental health
You never had a list of banned words at work? You missed the whole master/main thing? Words prefixed with black/white weren't given alternatives?

I had a manager once go thorough one of my slack conversations and go line by line with how I could rephrase things with softer corporate jargon.

There's books on leadership, books like crucial conversations, books on managing up. The industry is obsessed with staff engineers now and there's on that and the differentiator in that role is getting people to do things.

If you really don't deal with that, let me know where I can send a resume I'd love to work with normal people.

tayo42··on Home alone: Remote work, isolation, and mental health
Work is a fake environment where your communication is policed and you need to read books about how to effectively communicate to influence people do the things you want. Normals socialization isn't like that.
tayo42··on Home alone: Remote work, isolation, and mental health
I think almost all of my managers sucked and probably most in the world do. There's no real training, MBAs have their reputation for a reason or they're engineers promoted and maybe have a random close by mentor at best. The position is filled with career climbers. Career climbing doesn't priotize employees best interests.
tayo42··on AI, Ashby Engineering, and the future
Your not going to know your classes, parameters, how data should actually be laid out in storage or represented in the application until you start writing anyway. It's always an iterative process.
tayo42··on Retro-Tech Parenting
You can just borrow a phone
tayo42··on AI, Ashby Engineering, and the future
Because the assumption is code is expensive to generate. Otherwise why would you put all the upfront effort into all of the planning?Just write some code and iterate on where it goes.
tayo42··on AI, Ashby Engineering, and the future
Writings code has been viewed as an expensive part of development for a while. That's why the coding interview script the industry has adopted requires you to to not write any code until you suffenciently planned the whole problem.
tayo42··on Stop Killing Games
We used to have player run servers for years. Is it some lost skill to write software that way?

Take your ram budget, buy micron stock, wait a few days, sell it and buy ram lol
tayo42··on Please don't spam people looking for employment. It's just cruel
That makes no sense becasue contacting the company directly is usually just a communication blackhole
tayo42··on Please don't spam people looking for employment. It's just cruel
How much does it pay?

Turning all of those annoyingly verbose and long YouTube videos into text that could be searched, summarized and referenced easily would be amazing
tayo42··on The Pirate Bay Remains Resilient, 20 Years After the Raid
For some reason I thought the pirate bay was like fake/scam urls now. Is that or was that not the case? I thought I was remember the URL constantly changing and it was hard to keep up.
tayo42··on AI job grief: A psychological crisis hitting tech workers
> The obvious and direct answer immediately of course is "to be able to pay the bills".

Slight correction, is that it's I want to pay bills now. And not deal with uncertainty for a decade while other people try to direct the economy or what ever.

tayo42··on GTA 6 Developers Unionize
It probably depends on the level in the stack your at.

At a high level the engines and frameworks don't feel any different.

Work with graphics and models feels more difficult though then most networked application work I've done.

tayo42··on AI sticker shock hits corporate America
Can you think of a point in history when it wasn't.

Despite all of the problems that exist were still the best off.

tayo42··on DuckDuckGo search saw 28% more visits after Google said people love AI mode
Becasue they like it? Or becasue it happens to better then alternative tools we had?
tayo42··on DuckDuckGo search saw 28% more visits after Google said people love AI mode
There's a no ads in the Ai result though. And even if they add there isn't space for like 4 or 5 ad results like some searches can return. Some Google searches I have to scroll a whole screen away before I see a real result.

tayo42··on Uber president says AI spending is getting 'harder to justify'
There's probably tons of backend projects going on, expanding in countries, payments, complying with regulations, effeciency and reliability projects. They also do food delivery. There's a whole engineering team to support
tayo42··on Nobody cracks open a programming book anymore
I was just thinking to my self the other day how it's nice I don't need to stop what I'm doing to make a question that's answerable by someone else. Ai can answer my question without me spending time recreating the problem and stripping out all of the irrelevant context
tayo42··on Memory has grown to nearly two-thirds of AI chip component costs
I guess we can't bit these yet. I've been thinking about upgrading my ram for my laptop but it's like half the price of a new laptop lol
tayo42··on Claude Is Not Your Architect. Stop Letting It Pretend
The attaboy problem

I thought this happened alot. I started using chatgpt to critique my new art hobby and also help me learn unreal engine.

It's basically tearing into me on the art. It's almost ruthless, especially with the verbosity it's like I get it.

Using it for unreal engine, it pushes back on alot of my begginer ideas and how to write code that uses the engine. It corrects me alot. It's called things I wrote becasue I was lazy sloppy or quick hacks that work for now.

tayo42··on Don't just paste the AI at me
I'm surprised I haven't seen a "let me ai that for you" going around yet lol

tayo42··on AI has a multiplying effect on existing technical skills
The default isn't necessarily what ever you consider maintianable or do it right, which are ambiguous terms anyway.

You never wrote quick exploratory code? One off scripts? How is the Ai suppsed to know unless you tell it.

If you tell another person to write some code, how are they suppsed to know? If you have your boss come to you and ask you to write some code to do some data analysis are you going to spend weeks writing units tests and perfect abstractions? Or do it quick and get the data and result?

tayo42··on The Companies Cutting Headcount for AI Will Lose to the Ones Who Didn't
Has this ever happened? Companies are just keep going along. There's these consequences for things that hurt people
tayo42··on AI is just unauthorised plagiarism at a bigger scale
I think AI is just getting people riled up. Not sure what AI has to do with anything in this case here. Someone copy and pasted his content, could have been done without AI.

I guess AI could have made a better website and did better SEO then him but that's not really the issue
