tayo42··on Questions for believers in AI consciousness
yes, what is the system experiencing consciousness? the whole datacenter is conscious? the load balancers, the switches and routers, the firewalls, the ssds, the cpus coordinating the work all included?

every time you ask for the next token you different gpus on different servers are used. each generation of a token is an independent operation from the previous.

a brain is a system of neurons, you can add or remove some, it still some how generates a conscious experience. an llm generating tokens is doing math in a distributed way across what ever gpu happens to be free for that isolated request. there is no consistent system. what do you consider to be the conscious entity? the random selection of gpus? you think something is conscious one token at a time? what is the exact thing that is thinking? the way you can point to a body, you cant do that for an llm string of tokens. thats where i think it falls apart. your doing math that eventually reduces into a final number. theres no one system that continues to run and take input in.

tayo42··on Questions for believers in AI consciousness
Your thinking to low. There's no neurons in the llm. My nervous system makes up a system. It's consistent between experiences.

What's the system, the thing, that's experiencing consciousness when you talk about llms? Again, if you think through the request path of each token that's generated, this idea falls apart.

tayo42··on Questions for believers in AI consciousness
Go back to the original question. What is the thing that is conscious?
tayo42··on Questions for believers in AI consciousness
Only small models are conscious then? They're only conscious when the mat mul is running? When I switch to gaming what happens to it? If inference can run on one gpu then they're going to be shared between different user's requests. What if running on one gpu is never faster then doing parallel work? They'll never be conscious.

You need to think through the entire request for an llm model response end to end.

It's not the same you're not thinking at the right level. Your brain is your brain and your born with all of your neurons. The math in an llm request is run on what ever compute is available across multiple GPUs, servers and racks, assuming it's even run since there are caches involved. Is a cached response conscious?

The same gpu can run multiple llm requests for different people.

My neurons don't handle experiences for other humans. It's not a multi tenant brain (I hope haha)

I get tons of them too. I don't gamble or play games like that.

I'm curious about any answers to number 3. I think distributed computation is pretty messy.

I'm pretty sure panpsychism has answers for most of the other questions. I'm sure a commentor will correct me though.

tayo42··on Anthropic tried to persuade Pope that AI could be conscious being
There's no boundary for the system that's conscious. Those chemicals you mention enter into a system that is a thing. Your body, brain w/e.

There's no defined system with llms. A piece of software runs multiplication on various pieces of hardware. There's no thing to be conscious. There's no state or before and after when the next token is predicted. Your response might even be cached. A GPU runs one person's mat mul, then another for a completely unrelated request for someone else. What is the entity that's conscious?

tayo42··on Anthropic tried to persuade Pope that AI could be conscious being
Kind of what I don't get about people calling AI conscious. Because it's multiple GPUs,maybe even across multiple racks, and not even the same GPUs each time. Is the whole data center consciousness then?

I think it's from laziness and not having skill at design. Everything is fixable already,ai cant read your mind.

AI use seems to mostly show what people care about. If something matters, you'll work carefully on it. If it doesn't have chatgpt do it.

I think people just latch onto ideas that try to simplify and make sense of frustrating situations where they dont have control. "Ghost jobs" are thing to blame now, for a while is was that taxcode thing for software engineers.

It's not saying treat every problem as urgent, it's saying go through 5 steps that are defing the problem correctly then treat it urgently.
