tastythrowaway··on DuckDuckGo vs Google
This is a brilliant idea. Let's work on that. Seriously. Do you want to work on this together?

An important point: the would likely confiscate any devices you refuse to unlock. Is it worth that?
tastythrowaway··on Rules for new FPGA designers
This helps a lot actually, thank you. I know what works for one may not work for another - but it's good to know that revisiting it as a hobby may not be a complete waste of time.
tastythrowaway··on Rules for new FPGA designers
what did you study/how did you learn to design FPGAs? I had an early intro to verilog in school but it all seemed so opaque to me. Do you think it's possible for people to teach themselves? Thanks.
tastythrowaway··on In Bay Area, six-figure salaries are “low income”
That's obviously completely fair, and I appreciate you replying at all. I guess I took it as you were working for a single company and not a proprietor in any way. So that was (false) context I injected, and that's on me.

Clever setup. Very space-efficient. Do you find you get much utility as a standup in the entry way? Or is it used more as a server and you just have the monitor and keyboard there in case you need to log in quickly?

preach!
tastythrowaway··on Ask HN: Developers with kids, how do you skill up?
Although I happen to agree with you, please understand this logic does not apply to children. You are monkeying around with t in the s domain here. It's just a different ballgame. Everything else you do has a certain limit (you can only train for so long, each episode you binge is 44 mins, you can only reasonably eat your fill, etc.) but kids (especially early on) are like air for the vessel of time - their needs and wants will expand to use every last second and then some. They will cost you mindshare when you are not remotely near them. They will change the way you allocate present and future resources including time. They will never let you completely sleep. Please note that none of these are complaints (except maybe that last one) - these are merely the constraints of this domain.
tastythrowaway··on Ask HN: Developers with kids, how do you skill up?
Definitely not the only one. I think it depends on what stage your kids are at. Are they old enough to have their own hobbies? Our first arrived recently, I've resigned myself to the fact that working toward any sort of mastery again will elude me until he finds his own obsessions. So about 6 years or so if my childhood is any indicator. But I think having a relationship cuts into that as well. There are times when he's sleeping and we're both trying to work on projects and my wife wants to talk or "needs a hug" or something. At times it's frustrating, then I try and remember what things were like before they came along. Obviously this would all be different if I had means or money and was single at the same time...

I think the implication is "should they make a suboptimal decision in order to stay on schedule?"

In this case 'suboptimal decision' is denying access to OSS.

I think.

Secondary and tertiary definitions from MW for propaganda:

- the spreading of ideas, information, or rumor for the purpose of helping or injuring an institution, a cause, or a person

- ideas, facts, or allegations spread deliberately to further one's cause or to damage an opposing cause; also : a public action having such an effect

That certainly sounds exactly like the media's behavior in this country to me.

tastythrowaway··on Expanding Fact Checking at Google
You quoted something I didn't say. How does that even work? Is there a word for this? There should be. Anyway that's not what I said - I said they are the only ones who draw consistent ire. As in they are forcefully denounced as biased consistently, instead of all of them being called out for bias and conflict of interest equally (which, really, many more news networks should be).
tastythrowaway··on Expanding Fact Checking at Google
Ironically, your implication of tu quoque is itself a logical fallacy. I am not saying "RT is unbiased because Western media _is_ biased" - in fact I am saying all media is biased but of the parties mentioned only one consistently draws ire for its bias.

"The BBC is established under a Royal Charter and operates under its Agreement with the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. Its work is funded principally by an annual television licence fee which is charged to all British households, companies, and organisations using any type of equipment to receive or record live television broadcasts."

tastythrowaway··on Expanding Fact Checking at Google
Where is evidence of this 'reputation for being Putin's mouthpiece?' Other than your impassioned assertions? Also, all media is biased. BBC is biased toward Western and UK interests, RT is biased toward Russian interests. This is something RT freely admits. But does BBC?
tastythrowaway··on Expanding Fact Checking at Google
While the article mentions RT as an example of state-owned media, none of the cited incidents actually involve it. Also this website self-identifies as anti-Russian "disinformation." RT, ironically, has a similar mission against mainstream Western and EU media. So every one of these outlets has bias (even though not all of them are honest enough to claim it). So who should we believe?
tastythrowaway··on Expanding Fact Checking at Google
RT is state-funded as is the BBC and PBS, among many others. But none of them are immediately dismissed as propaganda. Why? Simply because "it's Russia?"
tastythrowaway··on Expanding Fact Checking at Google
What makes RT propaganda? The fact that they are critical of the US in ways our own media isn't?
tastythrowaway··on CIA Declassified Coldwar Russian Jokes [pdf]
I always wonder if the subversive elements that make it through aren't "missed" necessarily by a censor. I like to think that it's an act of subversion, a protest-by-omission, by some of the few people of conscience deep in the belly of the beast.
tastythrowaway··on CIA Declassified Coldwar Russian Jokes [pdf]
Yeah, nobody ever does that. Go ahead, google it.
tastythrowaway··on How I built the IMDb message boards, in 2001
I would guess it's expensive enough to get cut, right? People could donate, sure. It would still need dedicated resources. It's a popular enough service to need high concurrency and reasonably high availability - at least for peak usage, like when the new trailer for the next great trilogy drops.

I understand and agree with you w.r.t. hostels vs. hotels, and also feeling too old for that scene. I regularly get the impression that people become less outgoing over time (unless they're already tipsy when you meet them). I feel like when I meet people around my age (late 30s/early 40s) they're already all friended up and will donate no more than polite small talk or mindless automatic chit-chat. The halcyon days of being moulded by new experiences and sharing in a stranger's adventures belong to my son now :)

That's literally not what he said at all - he said "a non-zero number", meaning (i'm assuming here) an amount that exists but is difficult to quantify, yet not so low as to be completely ignored.
