tasogare··on Can I Go to Japan Yet?
> If you have a driver's license

Nop. But that would have been a solution I guess.

tasogare··on Can I Go to Japan Yet?
Normal taxi is forbidden. I've heard of someone's friend having to pay 30 man (yes, more than 3 times the plane ticket) to go from airport to home in a remote prefecture because of that countermeasure.
tasogare··on Can I Go to Japan Yet?
It's possible to enter Japan if you're Japanese or resident. The 3/6/10 days forced hotel quarantine is a PITA but the worst is that using public transportation is forbidden so one has either to pay huge amount of money to move with a private transportation (a friend paid 250 USD for a Osaka-Kyoto ride) or organize with a friend. I'm still in the organizing phase...
tasogare··on Will the Chinese Civil War End with a Bang or with a Whimper?
> How do you square that with France not joining the war until more than halfway through

Going by your logic the US involvement in WWII wasn't significant because it didn't started with the war. History manuals are saying otherwise though.

tasogare··on Two Years Is Long Enough
USA have 2.9 hospitals bed per 1000 inhabitants, on part with Albania and less than Lebanon[1]. Japan has 13, France 6. The overflow is 100% because of underfunding of hospitals and didn't happen in any developed countries besides the first wave.

tasogare··on Two Years Is Long Enough
Well, everyone except Macron, that probably see it as his only way to win the upcoming election.

Anyway I hope the whole thing won't be memoryholed and that a special tribunal will judge the people involved in stripping citizens rights (undue lockdowns and vaccine pass) and forcing a dangerous and ineffective product on the people. One can dream...

tasogare··on Leaving academia
Yep. In my lab two people are doing a PhD while having left university for awhile and while still doing their job (teaching English).
tasogare··on French Navy ATL2 MPA: Someone Just Lasered The Wrong Aircraft
Having read the news on a French website few days ago, suspicion goes to the usual suspects.
tasogare··on Ask HN: I’m starting a new job and things feel off. Am I overreacting?
Yes this is crazy. Starting date means what it means, before that one is not in the job.
tasogare··on Parler Raises $20M

tasogare··on Research explores why popular baby names come and go
That's akin to kirakira names in Japan.
tasogare··on AMD Ryzen 6000 Series Mobile CPUs Feature Microsoft's Pluton Security
There was at least 3 attempts from Microsoft in the past to do just this (Windows RT, S and X).

So while you can still run unsigned software on x86 on Windows today, if Microsoft previous attempts at ARM machines had succeeded, it would have been indeed impossible to run unsigned software on some Windows installations.

tasogare··on Antiplatelet and anticoagulant therapy resolves long covid in 24 patients
> Induced hemophilia is no joke.

Note that this is one of the possible side effect mentionned in Pfizer documentation of their covid vaccine, reported in article research articles like [1], and it doesn't seem to bother too much people.

tasogare··on Wi-Fi 6 Release 2 announced to further confuse you about Wi-Fi standards
I want a cross over with USB naming scheme for maximum confusion.
tasogare··on Ask HN: Have to invest 500K in a business – what can I do?
Idea from Japan: having 4 secretaries for a single MD.
tasogare··on Inclusive IT Language Guide [pdf]
I just got a message from git in my terminal related to "master" branch. Whatever your sexual orientation, gender, race, disabilities FUCK OFF, I'm gonna stick to proper English instead of Newspeak.

The same statement is true for my native language, French, where I'll never use the "écriture inclusive" bullshit except to mock it. Luckily the Académie is with me on this one.

tasogare··on The Burning Desire for Hot Chicken (2016)
They like to advertise spicyness but most of the time it's not really as spicy as it's marketed. Once however, I tried that Tabasco Scorpion sauce I found at a 100-yen Lawson, thinking it would be the usual bullshit and I've been taken for a ride.

tasogare··on Will Citroen manage to re-invent the wheel?
OK for American cities, but otherwise the proposition is very valid. I've been doing it for years.
tasogare··on Lessons from my PhD
I totally disagree with you. Giving a single word "guidance" and pretending to read a manuscript is not enough to qualify for authorship in most journals submission guidelines. Likewise, all the thing about money, lab space etc. (which in my case is funded by a national scholarship, not my supervisor) has nothing to do with research ideas, which is what papers are about. If people who are making my live easier as a grad student were to be giving authorship, the secretary and the cleaning lady would both rank higher than the head the lab. I'm putting the name of my supervisor because I'm forced to and because I belong to his lab but anyone who worked with him knows his involvement in lot of papers is close to 0.

So if someone has done the research and wrote the paper it is normal he got credit as first author for it. Whatever money is lying around isn't writing paper by itself. The monetary compensation is meager enough not to be robbed on top of that of what we created.

tasogare··on Lessons from my PhD
From my experience failing my PhD it's not so simple. The head of my lab have a bunch of topics he want to (make other people under him) investigate, sometimes really precise. One of the PhD student literally got his thesis question handed down after an experimented researcher worked on it for 6 months. Other like me had to found one themselves. It's obvious that the first student got a head start of about a year. The irony is he is now in difficulty writing his thesis, despite having published the required number of papers, which is not too surprising since he didn't get the problematic by himself.
tasogare··on Intimate portraits of a hospital Covid unit from a photojournalist-turned-nurse
> There are only about 2.5 hospital beds per 1000 in the US.

Wow that's really third world level of beds per inhabitants. In my country it's 6, and a bit more than the double (13.1) in Japan. No wonder Japan doesn't need to take harsh measures since the hospital capacity is able to deal with it.

For any US citizens or residents in this thread angry at non-vaccinated people, you should be angry against your government for under funding hospitals instead of your fellow citizens.

tasogare··on Intimate portraits of a hospital Covid unit from a photojournalist-turned-nurse
Must be nice to live in your fictional alternative universe. First the massive propaganda, enforced by governments, media and tech companies is in favor of the vaccination. There is literally no mainstream media or government on earth I can think of that are pushing an anti-vaccine agenda. Secondly if the vaccine worked, it would have stopped the epidemic already. It didn't made a dent even in countries with 90% vaccinated. This single fact should one think. And think again. The "anti-vaxxers" are the scapegoats of political and health policies that don't work.
tasogare··on I Lost My Past (2017)
Just like South Korea. It's sad so many lives were lost and the current situation is impossible to solve because of former US involvement.
tasogare··on South Africa’s omicron coronavirus outbreak subsides as fast as it grew
No he is totally right. I haven't been able to see my girlfriend for two years because of borders closing. I had to wait two years to see my parents. Friends and family that were supposed to visit me couldn't. Hundreds of event have been cancelled. I couldn't practice my martial art because our training place was close. I was denied entry in a library two days ago. I couldn't network or present my work in person at an international conference. Had to work remotely and didn't speak irl with coworkers for like 6 months. Restaurants closed very early. Etc, etc.

Covid itself had 0 impact on my life, I don't know a single person that died of it. All the suffering come from restrictions.

It's ok if you have a super boring life without friend or family, never doing anything out or traveling but at least have empathy for others that got miserable because of all those undue restrictions.

tasogare··on South Africa’s omicron coronavirus outbreak subsides as fast as it grew
Yes, you believe. The reality is that most healthcare systems, at least in developed countries, handled the patients well enough.
tasogare··on Apple’s use of Swift and SwiftUI in iOS 15
> why WOULDN'T you also provide compilation to Wasm and Javascript

Because it's useless save for a single kind of development (websites) and the main issue is not even in spitting out WASM but making the language runtime and libraries work in the browser. Most languages have no first-party WASM or Typescript support either.

tasogare··on The Scientific Paper is Obsolete (2018)
> referees have no skin in the game

That's a big problem. I just got a paper rejected. Reviewer 1 was just focalized on a single detail I mentioned somewhere, not central at all in the paper yet is basing most on this criticism around that. Reviewer 2 has difficulty understanding a table containing 2 columns and 3 rows, and what means N, V, ADJ and ADV in a paper about dictionary (not to mention the same abbreviation was used just before, and used a plain words numerous times in multiple paragraphs). Reviewer 3 is the only one saying a remotely nice thing and who seems to have grasped what the paper is about. There is of course some valid criticism raised in the reviews, but half of it is bullshit that would be dispelled in a more interactive process or/and if reviewers had incentives to actually put a minimal effort to understand the paper.

tasogare··on The Vaccine Moment, part one
> And nobody is banning novaxxed from getting medical care for free

False. France has at some point subordinated access to non-covid related health services to vaccination status.

>They’re totalitarians attacking scientific proof, wishing that their magical thinking

Post a copy of your PhD please. Not only you are lying on easily verifiable facts as mentionned previously, but you obviously have no idea what is science and how it is made. There is a reason vaccination hesitancy is highest (~25%) amoung PhD level educated people: precisely because they know the limit of science and how it is manipulated in the public discurse.
