had to name a variable earlier this week and even broke out the thesaurus. best i could muster was years_experienced_absolute :/

tariq··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (May 2011)
Toronto, Canada; Kanetix - http://www.kanetix.ca

This month we're specifically looking for a developer with Java experience to work primarily on rating engines. You'd be working in a small team of 4 developers.

The majority of the work would be Java with some web development (our web stack: linux, apache, perl, oracle sql, memcached, html/css/js). An insurance background would be beneficial, but is not necessary.

tariq··on Show HN: My cooking app that tells you what ingredients go well together
Showed it to a non techie friend who loves to cook. Here's his amusing feedback...

foodnetwork has an app where u can search a recipe then make a shopping list
  that's useful
an app that spits out random ingredients based on a search term does not impress me so much
search the term 'poo' in this amazing app then 'pee'
  then 'shit'
no i know that bacon goes well with everything....but c'mon now
tariq··on Show HN: My cooking app that tells you what ingredients go well together
Nice job, works really well

tariq··on Dudes, this is so not REST
lol whoops, forgot my sarcasm tags. i was not advocating calling anything RESTish.
tariq··on Dudes, this is so not REST
how about calling it RESTish? http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2242162
tariq··on Lettering.js - A jQuery plugin for radical web typography.
we used cufon for the last few years. looking to switch now since google preview doesn't support canvas and you end up with screenshots with no text
tariq··on [dead]
yep, doesn't belong here. (unless it was less generic)

tariq··on Google's Inevitable Ruin Begins
excellent, just appended '/html' to the default browser search engine url.

would be great if instead of having to use specific urls that this could be set up as a preference in settings. still, i'm a happy camper :)

tariq··on Tell HN: I made a minimalist timer. Launching today.
familiar with html and css?

you could design the page to be completely fluid and use up to 100% of the screen width.

then use the meta viewport tag and/or media queries to size the page for mobiles. http://www.quirksmode.org/blog/archives/2010/09/combining_me...

used the technique here, only difference is i set max-width http://concertsto.com

tariq··on Tell HN: I made a minimalist timer. Launching today.
does the job. ui doesn't look too great though.

why so small? countdown time should take up entire screen.

tariq··on Google's Inevitable Ruin Begins
this. the "improved" image search is terrible. very finicky and even hard to use--hardly simple.

re: ddg. regular user, but as others have pointed out already the ajax load for results is annoying (because it's slow and flashy/jerky).

tariq··on When a bullied kid grows up
pretty much mirrors my outcome. some social anxiety, lone wolf tendencies, with situational/social awareness thrown in there. can't complain really, although makes me wonder how i would have turned out had it not been for the rough childhood
tariq··on Why I won't TurnItIn
doesn't look too promising. let us know if you are successful.

"Requests to remove papers from the [student paper] database must be submitted to the Turnitin help desk by the institution's Turnitin account administrator."

tariq··on [dead]
or use a dedicated csv editor. i use CSVed.
tariq··on Why WordPress theming sucks
never used posterous, but it looks more similar to blogger than wordpress. well suited for churning out a simple blog.
tariq··on Why WordPress theming sucks
you're correct. the differences between wordpress and blogger are vast. you've mentioned the big ones already.

blogger is...

- easy to setup

- hard to customize

- limited in terms of features / plugins (if any)

- hosted as a service

tariq··on Why WordPress theming sucks
so 3 of his rants could have been resolved by simply reading the docs. brilliant.
tariq··on JQuery Blueprint - a js templating framework in just 30 lines of code.
care to elaborate how it compares to other js templating frameworks? (ie. features, speed)
tariq··on Trouble with Diaspora
agreed. not sure what direction they intend to go in
tariq··on What is the best comment in source code you have ever encountered?
# Do this twice because its stupid and won't work once

# I apologize for how messy this is. Blame it on an inconsistent database structure. I did the best I could.

tariq··on [dead]
why is it so difficult to just not use it?

when i felt things were "out of control" i trimmed down my friend list by half and stopped contributing needlessly (no status updates, photos, comments, etc.)

i'll login roughly once a day, peek at my newsfeed, comment where i feel it's productive and log out.

deactivating your account because you use it alot is stupid since facebook does provide some usefulness. it's all about moderation, no?

tariq··on VisitorVille: SimCity meets Web Analytics
i've installed and used it in a few years ago at a previous organization. it's alot of eye candy and nothing more. very limiting in terms of analytics (you're better off with google's offering). if i recall correctly we dropped it shortly after signing up.

despite it's shortcomings it's kinda fun to watch for awhile if you have significant traffic.
