taormina··on Initial details about why CrowdStrike's CSAgent.sys crashed
Imagine if Microsoft sold you a secure operation system like Apple. A staggering portion of the existing cybersecurity industry would be irrelevant if this ever happened.
taormina··on ID verification service for TikTok, Uber, X exposed driver licenses
Because you need a valid driver's license to drive, so if I'm contracting you to do any amount of driving, an extremely standard practice is to see if your license is good.
taormina··on U.S. vs. Google: As landmark monopoly trial closes, here's what to look for
There are many search engines. There always have been. Google has long stopped producing the highest quality product. They are provably spending their money in a way which actively prevents competition from having a chance.

Wildly successful products can develop natural monopolies, yes, but that is not what we are seeing here.

taormina··on Can GPT optimize my taxes? An experiment in letting the LLM be the UX
Not yet.
taormina··on Why Has Figma Reinvented the Wheel with PostgreSQL?
Would literally any of the problem be solved?
taormina··on Ask HN: How many of you are self employed?
Greenfield development is a way of saying "new and from scratch" usually, whereas editing an existing codebase would not be.
taormina··on Ask HN: Is (n)vim worth the trouble?
I've used vim for about a decade now and learned about it in college from friends. Having vi available on nearly any box makes it very universal.

Most modern IDEs have a straightforward enough vim plugin that just works in my experience (at least the JetBrains ones do).

taormina··on We apologize for the confusion and angst the runtime fee policy caused
The only confusion I have is how they think this is sufficient. Let’s start by seeing the proposed change!
taormina··on Record Labels File $412M Copyright Infringement Lawsuit Against Internet Archive
Something being stupid and something being technically not illegal are wildly orthogonal.
taormina··on Brian Chesky: Ability to hire from anywhere is more valuable than in-office work
Find better headhunters. They do work on commission
taormina··on Twitter's Recommendation Algorithm
Credibility from what exactly? Having last year's most expensive mid-life crisis? He once had some credibility, no one will deny that. Respect is earned and lost.
taormina··on GitHub Copilot X – Sign up for technical preview
So it set some headers. Did it pick the right headers? Did it know what headers the recipient was expecting?
taormina··on Poisoning web-scale training datasets is practical
Oh boy, the best place for subtle errors. A public wiki, being proofread by someone who is likely not a subject matter expert! I don’t see anyway this can go poorly. And obviously search hasn’t been solved for decades.
taormina··on Tell HN: Microsoft classifies own emails as junk
I have to use Google Hangouts or Meet or whatever it’s called now, Zoom, Teams and Slack Huddles. Teams consistently screws up audio, video or both! Then we end up back in Slack.

taormina··on CEO Jack Altman’s email to Lattice employees
I'd love to have a meaningful conversation. I'd love to hear a novel idea. You have to forgive me for being a little jaded though when I continually ask to hear a use case and I continually don't get use cases.

"Some places are so terrible that the only external financial systems unregulated enough to allow them to participate are these specific unregulated financial markets" is some net good being produced in end for the citizens of those regimes, and circumstantially the "block chain did that" I guess, but that still doesn't tell me why you needed a block chain to be involved to begin with.

taormina··on CEO Jack Altman’s email to Lattice employees
Thank you for this list.
taormina··on CEO Jack Altman’s email to Lattice employees
Still waiting to hear one of these valid and good uses cases for a publicly distributed ledger. One of these days I’ll hear one, but I haven’t yet. Circumventing oppressive regimes seems to be the only thing I’ve heard of that vaguely sounds like a value proposition.
taormina··on Worst interview questions for software developers
Interviews are a two way street. They crashed and burned on your interview. Unless they can explain that they are paying 25% more to compensate for 25% more time, why would you work for them?

I had a similar situation interviewing with one of Musk’s companies a while back. Who would want to work 80 hour weeks to make a 40 hour a week salary? The answer should be no one. You did great.

taormina··on Too big to live, too loved to die: Big Tech's billion dollar curse of the free
I want to pay to not be the product. Especially when I purchase a product that can spy on me in my own home. They should obviously increase prices but my point is that haven’t tried to offer it. They’d rather subsidize it all with ads and not give their consumers a choice. They could offer an ad-free experience for more money if they wanted to. And still sell the existing products for the same price. But they haven’t tried yet.
taormina··on Too big to live, too loved to die: Big Tech's billion dollar curse of the free
How could we know? They haven’t tried yet.
taormina··on Too big to live, too loved to die: Big Tech's billion dollar curse of the free
They could just make less crappy devices. We love the concept and hate the implementation.

taormina··on BlockFi files for bankruptcy as FTX fallout spreads
Offering unrealistic returns paid from the fresh influx of cash based on advertising about the unrealistic returns until the whole house of cards collapses is EXACTLY what a Ponzi scheme is. How *isn't* this a Ponzi scheme?
