takameyer··on Gitea: Open source, self-hosted GitHub alternative
I‘ve been using drone (http://drone.io). I self host it alongside gitea. The documentation us quite good, loads of plugins available and it works flawlessly with gitea.
takameyer··on Submarine Cable Map
Last night I was curious about physical wire connections across oceans for communications. So I started researching and learned about the first ocean line implemented in 1858 for telegraph communication. Seeing this link on the top of HN today was pretty much exactly what I was trying to conclude my research with last night. What a strange coincidence.
takameyer··on PuTTY 0.61 released
It's my primary work tool for embedded c/c++. That and vim.
takameyer··on How to become a great finisher
I find it easy to obsess on optimizing parts of a project before the whole is complete. Focusing on getting pieces into a working state as soon as possible helps relieve a lot of the stress. And generally I find it less stressful to have something that's good enough and have extra time to attempt to make it better. I also make sure, even if it's good enough, to not present the done project until I've had time to at least attempt to optimize. Early presenting of 'good enough' often results in 'more projects'.
takameyer··on Microsoft to acquire Skype
I see this as a good thing. Currently Skype is used in my workplace, and poorly at that. Mostly because the contact information isn't in sync with Outlook accounts. This could probably be alleviated with some sort of process, but no one has taken the reigns on that. So if this syncs up nicely with the Microsoft programs I'm forced to use everyday, it'll just make things that much easier.
takameyer··on LSD: The Geek's Wonder Drug
It is amazing what psychedelics can bring to the table. Once you step outside of the stream of consciousness society creates for us, it's tough to want to be apart of it again. You feel free. No longer a cog in the machine, but perhaps more an observer or tinkerer. I realized for myself that I no longer have to be a part of that. It is truly out of the box thinking. I find myself outside of the box and generally I'm trying to find the boundaries. This may or may not effect my programming abilities, but it definitely puts the time I have in this world into perspective. The ability to abstract and visualize connections between objects has most definitely increased since experimentation, but I'm not sure if that's a bi-product of myself programming more, or the drugs themselves. All I know is that I would never take those moments back, the bad and the good, as they have shaped who I am and what I strive to be.
takameyer··on AIDS vaccine in final testing
While I'm happy to hear this promising news, this article could really use more beef. Anyone have some good references or additional information on this topic?
takameyer··on Someone is stealing your life (1990)
I work the office cubicle software job, but this doesn't bring me down too much. At times the mindset the author describes can creep up, but I can deal with it by realizing that everyday I'm getting better and better at what I do. Being an embedded developer, having access to tools that I otherwise could not afford is a great perk at my job. Knowledge of how to use them could only come from a university, a company or falling into a large sum of money. Granted the bureaucratic office politics exists, but I feel it's not as bad as it could be. I have the freedom to solve problems using the tools I desire. We use Linux for our micro operating system, so I'm gaining valuable command line skills and script-fu. My only complaint is my current salary. But the freedom and encouragement to continue learning is worth more to me than the money anyway.
takameyer··on Poll: How old are you?
Looks like we lost the 21-25 category.
takameyer··on Ask HN: Do you meditate? How/Why?
I've gone back and forth with meditation. Generally if I feel that my emotions are negatively affecting my actions, then it's time to sit back and analyze it. Clearing my head through breath meditation allows me to attack my problems one at a time.
takameyer··on Verizon iPhone 4
4.) Not having an AT&T carrier in the area. Being from a state where AT&T is not an available phone service (South Dakota), this is a big deal. I'm not sure how many other states have this issue. We have been waiting for this since the iPhone was released. It will be great to finally have another smart phone option from a big player. Though I'll probably stick to my Android phone.
takameyer··on What does it feel like to be stupid? An anonymous Quora user explains.
I had a similar experience after recieving a concussion this summer. My memory was shot, I had to write everything down constantly. Basically it forced me to become more organized and really simplify my lifestyle. I was really close to getting burned out. It's been a rough trip, but I'm starting to get a good foundation built again. Learning to cut down my projects and not working like a dog has helped out immensely. I would not like to experience that handicap again, as I'm still often struggling with the effects.
takameyer··on Web Programming Is Hard
Any recommended resources on getting a good foundation for HTTP?
takameyer··on This is experimental. However, it could start a revolution in information access
I was in Berlin, age 6, also at the fall of the wall. Father was in military intelligence for US. I think at that time I was getting games to run on our computer using MS-DOS.
takameyer··on Poll: OkCupid stories
I tried it, and it generally just depressed me that all my compatible matches were over 100 miles away. Guess I should get out of South Dakota if I ever want this service to do any good for me. It would probably be good for my sanity and career if I did.
takameyer··on Ask HN: Will you use an "Evernote for words" I plan to build?
While reading online books, I generally have another browser open to look up those difficult words. The tabs tend to expand quite quickly after hours of reading. If the interface were dead simple, then I would find this very useful. I've been looking for ways to expand my vocabulary. Being able to access a listing of these words that I lookup would be quite interesting and may actually help me out quite a bit. Keeping it universal is a great idea. Whenever I find myself with downtime, I'm generally looking on my phone for something to read. It would be great to access this listing on the go. I'm excited to try this out!
takameyer··on HN-Books
Wonderful! I've been looking for a resource like this for a while. Many blog posts, but nothing like this.
takameyer··on The Complete History of Lemmings
3 hours of an Indiana Jones adventure game I somehow missed in life. Thanks!
takameyer··on The Complete History of Lemmings
Thanks. There goes my Sunday...
takameyer··on Ask HN: What are you working on today?
Sniffing out a buffer overflow issue on an AT32UC3B. Very new to the lower level c, so it's a process.
takameyer··on Poll: Are you getting an iPad?
Looks like it would be an advanced coffee table book...that you have to charge...and costs $499. No thanks.
takameyer··on POW turns Firefox into a web server.
I was thinking the exact same thing. Somehow gaining small access to an internet connected computer and slowly being able to create a system to serve out distress messages. I was pretty disappointed when I clicked the link...haha
