tahoeskibum··on Tech Workers Take to the Mountains, Bringing Silicon Valley with Them
Even the federal government has geographical cost of living adjustments to salaries.
tahoeskibum··on It’s dangerous to think humans have a destiny outside Earth
It is dangerous to think fish have a destiny outside Ocean, said a vocal member in a school of fish 400 million years ago.
tahoeskibum··on Mitochondria may hold keys to anxiety and mental health
I'm in a similar situation. I've found that taking CoQ10 and NAD+ (e.g. Niagen or Elysium Basis) has been helpful.
tahoeskibum··on Boeing quietly pulls plug on the 747, closing era of jumbo jets
The old order changeth to make way for the new: the era of Starships.
tahoeskibum··on Amazon Echo Show
I use Alexa integrated with SmartThings and that allows all these automations e.g. lights switch off automatically when I leave, thermostat turns down heating/cooling etc.
tahoeskibum··on Tesla Passes Ford by Market Value
I've been expecting this ever since I test drove a Tesla last year and got the same feeling I got back in 2008 when I saw an iPhone 3G. The market isn't betting on just another car company but on. car + energy (electricity instead of gas) + TaaS (Transportation as a Service). Tesla has a tremendous headstart on this and in 5-10 years I expect a bloodbath like the smart phone wars, with a only 2-3 main players left e.g. Tesla:Apple::Waymo:Android.
tahoeskibum··on Tesla Says Model 3 on Track as Quarterly Loss Beats Estimates
Love your detailed and carefully thought out post, I learnt a lot from it (I didn't know that Mazda was just $9 billion). However I think it is wrong to compare Tesla with BMW. I am of the opinion that it is better to compare it with Apple i.e., >10 times what Tesla is valued today.
tahoeskibum··on Unexpected Consequences of Self-Driving Cars
I think that driving in places such as India with little traffic rules might be easier for an AI because the traffic flow is self-organized. There might not be any rules, but that is not relevant as we are not talking about expert rule based systems. If the AI car sees a cow it'll just slow down and move to the side to overtake.
tahoeskibum··on Elderly Cared For By Female Doctors Fare Better Than Those Treated By Men
This could also indicate that women have to be much better than men in order to become a doctor.
tahoeskibum··on How AI and Machine Learning Work at Apple
Nice article, but in my perception, Apple is way behind in AI vs. Google on mobile. Siri's current speech recognition is still far behind Google on my iPhone. Half of the time it Siri doesn't recognize something but Google recognizes it right way. Apple Maps continues to lag in the following features: biking and public transit and even things like which lane to take on a big interchange. As a result I end up using Google (Now) and Google Maps by default.
tahoeskibum··on Leonard Guarente's Anti-Aging Pill
After reading up on a bunch of papers on NR, I decided to try it for a month. I found that I have noticably better sleep in terms of deep sleep vs light sleep (as quantified by a sleep tracker) and faster muscle recovery after bike rides. I just signed up up for a 1 year subscription. YMMV
tahoeskibum··on Justice Department Calls Apple’s Refusal to Unlock iPhone a ‘Marketing Strategy’
Sounds like a classic ad hominem attack as per Graham's hierarchy.
tahoeskibum··on Show HN: Konsus.com – On-demand freelancers via chat
How does your service compare to Codementors.io which does similar stuff?
tahoeskibum··on Ask HN: Making the switch from physics to industry?
Please do consider medical physics. We have a former string theorist in our team who does great Monte Carlo simulations of medical linacs. I myself have an experimental physics background and use my knowledge in product development in the radiation oncology field in Palo Alto. APS has a local link service in which you can meetup with local physicists in Bay Area and talk to them about industrial positions.
tahoeskibum··on The result would be a catastrophe (1985)
That's a good point. It is easy to just say that the others were incompetent without knowing the rate of false positives ie. how frequently were such memos written talking about catastrophes. The issue of rate of false positives vs true positives (i.e.,real problem) is something that most engineers and managers don't have a good grasp of.
tahoeskibum··on You're Not Allowed to Criticize Startups, You Stupid Hater
I was trying to take a bus from a regular bus stop around 7 pm. Nearby shops where I could've bought a card were closed by then (in that part of London).
tahoeskibum··on You're Not Allowed to Criticize Startups, You Stupid Hater
Nicely put. I like Valley for the same reason, it is a safe space to try out stuff and see what sticks. Uber saved my ass in London when I got stuck as the public transportation doessn't accept cash or credit (only the special Oyster Card). The hype needs to be taken with a grain of salt but there are some really valuable and useful startups out there. P.S. I too made ~ $6K last quarter on AirBnB.
tahoeskibum··on How Valeant Went from Wall St. Darling to Pariah
Hope that the next prez tackles corporate tax reform to make this sort of "inversion" no longer feasible.
tahoeskibum··on Ask HN: So I'm being let go
Being a Jack of all trades can be an asset in a startup, specially in your case for a role in marketing/advertising.
tahoeskibum··on The mystery of India’s deadly exam scam
I wish Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg would start sometjhing like an X-prize to reduce corruption. Lack of drinking water and malaria are just the symptoms. I grew up in India and am too familiar with this cancerous corruption that keeps third world countries firmly in the third world... :-(
tahoeskibum··on My adventures in medical tourism
One thing I've never understood about the US system is why do the doctors charge more for paying cash e.g. $200 for a visit, whereas insurance reimburses them less than half e.g. $80. In everything else e.g. car repairs, the cash price is always lower than insurance covered price. Any ideas why this is so?
