tP5n··on Similarities between the behavioural effects of oxytocin and alcohol
This is not true: GHB is addictive, very hard to dose and in combination with the most used 'night life' drug (alcohol) actually toxic and lethal in small doses. It's also known as the 'date rape drug' for this very reason.
tP5n··on Optimizing Handwriting
hm, in elementary I got taught to write every word in one stroke, except for the uppercase F's and T's and the like. Consequently I found the article to be utterly confusing.
tP5n··on Amazon Fire TV Gaming Edition
The standard voice remote is included in the gaming bundle.
tP5n··on I created a fake business and bought it an online reputation
As an example, reddit kickstarted the hype quite well, and see, now they're worth 500 million ;)
tP5n··on Reducing workplace burnout: the benefits of exercise
btw, most personal trainers are horrible at teaching proper technique. I'd recommened the books written by Marc Rippetoe and Bill Starr and watching videos by powerlifting coaches and lifters (that do not focus on lifting in gear). I could 'fix' (read: strengthen and work around) my back troubles with deadlifting, but would not recommened that to someone without a guide or knowledgeable help at hand.
tP5n··on Reducing workplace burnout: the benefits of exercise
Mostly by overstretching particular joints under load, eg. behind the neck presses and pulldowns & pushing myself on dumbbell presses with weights I could move but barely control, at one point I lost control but did not drop the weights.

The others where loading up machines with weights I could not have moved if it weren't for the fixed movement plane of the machine, that ultimately meant trouble for my lower back (leg press) and grinding in my knees (leg extensions).

tP5n··on Reducing workplace burnout: the benefits of exercise
I can only recommened the opposite: if you are doing strength training by all means use mostly barbells and stick to the big 3 (some sort of press, a squat and a deadlift variations). I hurt my back, shoulder and knees doing various machines and dumbbell variations over the last 15 years, the fear in regards to lifting heavy with barbells usually stems from horrible technique, most people do not realize that lifting is a sport that needs to be learned, it's not enough to just "push the weight".
tP5n··on Reducing workplace burnout: the benefits of exercise
yet the description was quite obviously a joke by schwarzenegger and was thought to get the attention of the public/media, no one seriously into weight lifting would ever say that. if you don't believe me watch the making of pumping iron - the 25 anniversary version.
tP5n··on Economics Has a Math Problem
Why would a self-described 'erratic marxist' even be concerned about contradicting Keynesian economics?
tP5n··on Slack Poker Bot
No, that's not how poker is played, it really is about counting odds and evaluating the possible plays. Unless you were kidding of course and I'm far to sleepy again.
tP5n··on How Does Voxel Quest Work Now?
CTF? OK. between this and the axe, at one point you basically have to do voxelquake, just so that we can play with that engine :)

that might not be a bad idea for a 'simple enough' game, a fps within everything is destructible. four a side, some simple enough goal, a timer set to 20 minutes and you have a potentially very fun game.

/edit: in an 'afps' level design would make draw distance less of an issue aswell.

tP5n··on Isolated people in Sweden only stopped using runes 100 years ago
no, that is most definitely not how 'runes came to be'. as others have pointed out in this thread: there are practical, not mystical, reasons why runes used to be a thing and it's got nothing to do with giants...
tP5n··on Poker Theory and Analytics
Poker is not a lottery, the cards are not 'stacked against us'. I'd also question the subtext that gambling (addiction?) only harms the poor.

I wish people would be able to make educated decisions in regards to their own life. I would not want the state to decide on how I, or others, spent our pastime.

tP5n··on Poker Theory and Analytics
Mostly everything Phil Gordon, David Sklansky and Ed Miller put out over the years. poker differs a lot in its variants, atleast to newcomers, so it's probably best to pick up one variant (no limit hold'em I'm looking at you) and start from there.
tP5n··on The Coder Who Encrypted Your Texts
yep, in other words around 4% of the world's population live in the US and of course this pales in comparison to actually large nation states, like india or china.
tP5n··on Leaked Hacking Team code to edit browser history?
Hacking Team has a horrid history of not keeping their word, the Sudan connection for example they explicitly denied, among others. I don't get the shitstorm for the CP strings, even after a cursory look at the files uploaded there is quite a lot of stuff I'm more concerned about :d
tP5n··on Ask HN: How can I trust Google Analytics?
piwik? https://piwik.org/
tP5n··on OpenSSL Security Advisory
'actual debian' made me smile .)

all quibbling aside, most people would probably need an explanation to understand your post, as the recent version of debian is indeed affected, as in debian-unstable (sid)'s openssl.

tP5n··on The Death Penalty in Louisiana
No, it's not a slope. Gay marriage and the death penalty are two very different things and I can't believe I'm typing this out.

There also numerous reasons to be against the death penalty but not abortions, but something tells me I'd rather not have this discussion here and now [1].

tP5n··on How US students get a university degree for free in Germany
Sadly, I find the article to be fairly misleading. First of all, the living costs are far higher than they make you believe and then there is the "free degree" vs. "semester fee + x" debate that is actually very different from university to university in germany - and I believe they are oddly mistaken when it comes to the University of Munich.

Where I studied, the rent was 350-450€/month and the semester fee around 250-300€/term. True, the health insurance for students is incredible (~70€), but I'm not going to comment on what the BBC apparently thinks is reasonably in terms of "Groceries" and "Misc.", that's just seems weird to me. Bottom line, as a student you are not going to get by with 7k/year in Munich.

Oh, and hey, you need to get accredited at a university first, of course ;)

tP5n··on The Fallen of World War II – An Interactive, Data-Driven Documentary
Here's some scientific evidence of the Russians throwing over 20 million human lifes [1] into german gun barrels: take a look at the original post. You mentioning the winter twice seems quite cynical in context.

[1] I've recently read a newish book about the casualties on the eastern front which suggests (based on research by western scholars) that the actual numbers were probably well over 32 million people and due to political reasons had been down played a lot by soviet sources.

tP5n··on Decoding the Enigma of Satoshi Nakamoto and the Birth of Bitcoin
I don't think so, to be honest. The context is important and, atleast to me, it seems he makes a difference between "Nick Szabo" and his pseudonyms, here:

Another big problem I see with pseudonymous reputations is entry. If most people are blocking posts from new pseudonyms, how does one get a new reputation stablished? I've had several years to establish a net.reputation for "Nick Szabo", and it might take a long time for any of my pseudonyms to catch up.

tP5n··on Saying goodbye to encrypted SMS/MMS
textsecure is a service that will encrypt your messages (to yourself and chosen others), imesssage is a service that will encrypt your messages (to apple), telegram is a service that sometimes encrypts your messages ... etc. pp.

none of the services encrypt your sms anymore, though.

tP5n··on Valve Announces Source 2, and It’ll Be Free
In this case it's more a polite way of saying "the founders got forced out" - or more bluntly: the idiots in charge managed to get rid of id's greatest asset.
tP5n··on [dead]
Someone missed their free 5-day email course on How to communicate with people in 2015, because when I look at their list[1] every single one of the 5 things that shouldn't happen, just happened.

tP5n··on GPG and Me
No linux support, no firefox support.

Literally the second tweet on their twitter account is 'Damn, it works. Got a lawyer who resisted all other methods to encrypt our comms with @Peerio. Big score for usability. Bravo @kaepora & co.' which kind of bugs me, too.

tP5n··on Laura Poitras on the Crypto Tools That Made Her Snowden Film Possible
Encrypted text messages are relatively easy to implement as the apps (textsecure/redphone - signal) in question 'stack' nicely on top of whatever they were using for SMS already.

Encrypted mails are more problematic but aslong as they are using web mail, get them Mailvelope. On android with the K9 mailclient (+ openkeychain/apg) PGP-inline is possible to use, while it's not something your 'friends and family' will enjoy.

I have a personal disdain for pidgin/adium (libpurple), but similar to encrypted text messages: Once setup OTR is out of the way of your standard IM usage and it comes down to understanding user authentication.

tP5n··on Ask HN: TrueCrypt audit status?
Asking if you should trust software X is like asking the internet if it'd be healthy for you to start running a marathon.

For starters, how would we know? The software in question is closed-source and has spotty docs as best - and more importantly: your trust in a software is something that only you can establish for yourself, irregardless if whatever number of people on the internet claim the product trustworthy.

tP5n··on The Bitcoin Piñata
...preventing surveillance by running a vpn service and claiming not to have any kind of traffic logs, so yeah ;)
tP5n··on A Heroin Dealer Tells the Silk Road Jury What It Was Like to Sell Drugs Online
I think you're mistaken. While the first part is certainly true - I remain doubtful about the implication for addictive potential of a drug - the second part is a rather bad example:

Both in your nose and in your mouth the drug is absorbed into the bloodstream via a mucous membrane. The reason you don't see a lot of people putting large doses of cocaine on their gums is largely practical... same thing for mdma for example, just the other way around.

/edit The coke-numbs-your-gums part is supposed to be a test for the quality of the product, easily faked though.
