t344344··on 3Dfx Voodoo Memory Upgrade – 6MB Mod [video]
Macbook users have to do something like this when moving their SSD drive to other machine! Not very user friendly!
t344344··on Apple halted M2 chip production in January amid 'plummeting' Mac sales
Buy extra cloud storage, buy extra connectivity for backups, buy extra desoldering station....

Or maybe just take screw driver and move it to next machine.

t344344··on Framework’s computers aren’t perfect, but they are exciting
> I don’t know if I will ever buy a Framework laptop. Most of my workflows now revolve around macOS,

Why we are reading opinion pieces from Apple sheep that does not known anything?

Framework has its place. But bigger problem is that industry is dominated by idiots, who should not be able to share their opinion, on things they did not even try!!!

t344344··on Apple halted M2 chip production in January amid 'plummeting' Mac sales
Apple does not have enterprise grade laptop with replaceable SSD. They need to be more competitive!
t344344··on Problems that attract smart people
Anybody else can take the advice "buy more RAM".
t344344··on Wronger Than Wrong
Yeah, people have to fight for the truth, to give legitimacy to large corporations!
t344344··on Wronger Than Wrong
> You are confusing science with ... academia.

Academia is the science. You can not separate those two. Not after last three years.

I get the idea and process, read Asimov, have PhD etc...

t344344··on Wronger Than Wrong
Science is about money and publishing. We find sponsor, we publish, we get money. There is nothing hard to understand about this business model!
t344344··on Ask HN: WWYD? Built a company valued at $1B and may walk away with nothing
> Today, my base salary is $175K, no bonus, no stock refresh since the founder grant, fully vested stock, no severance, no indemnification. (Mainly because I just haven't asked for new comp b.c company is in a difficult spot) - In comparison, I hired a critical new C-Suite exec (COO) and gave her $285K/year

Here is your problem.

Some founders milk company directly on bonuses and pay, there is no "grand exit" when they go public. I think you may be subconsciously aware of that, maybe there is some hidden regret or self-hate etc... Continuing with this frugality may not be way forward.

I would suggest:

- get out of NY, some nice environment near sea or forest, work remotely

- prepare for your exit. Move out of NY to minimize income tax etc..

- can you actually become CEO? If not, it is not your business anymore, not your problem

- find way to increase your take-home money. For start you could pay yourself for overtimes. Maybe if you move out of NY, you may need office there and so on...

- personal brand is worth quite a lot. Maybe there is way to use this startup to build your own.

t344344··on My experience being blocked by Google Safe Browsing (2022)
> hosted a Mastodon server on the domain

Mastodon is often used to distribute illegal content. If you self host you need to be ready to deal with this stuff. Like with self hosted SMTP server.

Not saying it is good or bad, just reality!

t344344··on How to change the region on an HP OfficeJet printer in 57 easy steps
You have to keep or swap DRM chip. But I am in EU, not really sure about US.
t344344··on How to change the region on an HP OfficeJet printer in 57 easy steps
Who has so much free time? Easy solution:

- return cartridges since they do not work in "compatible" printer. Consumer laws do not care about small print or region locks

- go to unauthorized shop and have original cartridges refiled. I recycled cartridge like that for several years.

t344344··on The Twitter API is now effectively unmaintained
> Another data point: of the 20 newest posts on this forum, 12 are about Twitter not responding to the standard API access request process, and 4 seem to be about API bugs. This has been the pattern for a while now. It seems like Twitter is now largely ignoring all manual processes and bugs.

Non-responsiveness is pretty normal for large corporations. Try to send email to Google or Facebook. Calling their products "unsupported" and "unmaintained" may actually fit dictionary definition!

t344344··on A Response to Jacob Kaplan-Moss’s “Incompetent but Nice”
In theory maybe.

My point is why should I even make that fight? I have my own issues, my own life, my own people that depend on me.

t344344··on A Response to Jacob Kaplan-Moss’s “Incompetent but Nice”
Stuff like this is why I refuse to return back to office. There is some sort of relationship play between "nice guys" and managers. Both of them are refusing to do their work, "nice guy" to complete his work and manager to manage. And somehow I am part of this, and have to work extra weekends!
t344344··on Early Remote Work Impacts on Family Formation
Nice paper. Now I can just point that return-to-office is sexist!
t344344··on Treat your to-read pile like a river, not a bucket
I found most books are just garbage. Take Moby-Dick for example, interesting story that could be compressed to two pages, but it is 400 pages of boring stuff, that goes on and on. And it can not be criticized as it is "fundamental corner stone of American literature"!

Watching documentary about original story, and a few pieces about 19 century whale hunting, is much better use of time!

t344344··on GitHub slashes engineering team in India
Try latest version. Now it just sends link to Wine.
t344344··on PayPal has restricted our account after we invoiced a key containing “ALEP”
I have opposite problem. I am trying to deactivate paypal account or get banned. They keep sending me spam.

I stopped using paypal long time ago. Phone number I used expired when I moved countries. Paypal somehow activated 2FA authentication and I can not login.

Perhaps I will try this

t344344··on After a decade, South Dakota's Amish are moving on
Exactly! Therapist would never push something like that onto mentally ill person with schizophrenia or autism! And child can give fully informed consent, just like with circumcision!
t344344··on John Glenn’s $40 Camera Forced NASA to Rethink Space Missions
Right, unless it breaks and Americans have to launch from Kazakhstan :)

There were two spy satellites with the same mirror diameter as Hubble. Launched by normal rockets! Without spending money on shuttle, US could launch new Hubble every 5 years or so!

> Both NRO space telescopes have a main mirror nearly 8 feet wide (2.4 meters), rivaling the Hubble Space Telescope,

t344344··on When root on ZFS breaks on Arch Linux
I am not sure what consensus is, but I use this: https://memtest.org/
t344344··on When root on ZFS breaks on Arch Linux
I had similar issue with BTRFS thanks to new faulty DDR4.

- CRC checksum for some blocks on fs was wrong

- I discovered faulty DDR4, replaced it, without knowing FS corruption

- system started randomly kernel panicking

- no msg in logs (fs died with kernel)

- eventually I experienced kernel panic while at computer, and seen msg on screen (broken checksum or something)

- there was no way to repair filesystem. I had to recover as much as data, throw away some files and start over on fresh

- I use BTRFS snapshot streaming in backups, wrong checksums propagated to backups. I had to restore from 1 week old backups

- Since than I use RSYNC backups as well

- And I test all PCs with memtest monthly overnight. It is also a good stress test for CPU.

t344344··on Cigna saves millions by having its doctors reject claims without reading them
I had MRI in EU, it was 160 euro for scan, and another 50 euro for specialist consultation. Public insurance would not cover it, so I paid it myself.

Not sure what is holding you back, but health should be a priority!

t344344··on The Myth of the Alpha Wolf
> Mech had relied on research done on captive wolves.

But it describes wolves in captivity pretty well! Most references about "alpha" I seen were from a dog behavior. Pack of dogs has a hierarchy and follows orders.

Pick-up originated from dog training. Maybe that is how this term got applied to people.

t344344··on Framework Laptop 16
It is not a laptop, but Asus PN53 has 1kg with 7 USB port, 2x2.5 Gb ethernet, 4x4k@60Hz displays, 64GB RAM and 3xSSD. I use it as a docking station while traveling.
t344344··on Anime dating sim that also does your taxes
I would be totally up for such AI assistant, but it absolutely has to be self hosted. I would also like an option to audit its memory and scrub sensitive information.
t344344··on Unpopular Opinion: Don’t Use a Raspberry Pi for That
It does not get the job done.

Last problem I had with Pi: my keyboard did not work for some reason. Guess what, Pi has shitty USB 1.1 implementation (USB 2.0 is different stack), on top of that it does not give enough power to connected devices. With normal computers I had similar problems in 2003!!!

For serious use it is like Gentoo. You have to learn about its boot process, how it bootstraps from video memory.... Or how USBC power delivery is not really important (remember Pi4 initial batches?)...

It only makes sense if you are deploying embedded devices on midscale (~100 devices). For hobby projects it is a nonse. You have to learn completely new HW platform just to read sensor data...? Haha

t344344··on Unpopular Opinion: Don’t Use a Raspberry Pi for That
I hate PI because its hardware is just junk. Cheap low end stuff designed for consumer electronics like TVs!

Devops like to use Intel NIC, ECC memory only. But somehow Pi junk gets pass because it is "open-source" or what.

Great, we will run this mission critical deployment from cheap SD CARD!!!!!
