szatkus··on Nippon Colors
You could have just rotate everything 90 degreees and the site would be readable for everyone.
szatkus··on Ask HN: Who has been laid off?
We had a call on Friday exactly for this. We were asked if we want a paycut or laid-offs.
szatkus··on WebGPU Shading Language
Number type in JS is fp64 since forever (at least the interface, usually it's optimized to int32 by an engine, but if you use decimals you can be sure you have fp64 under the hood) and BigInt[0] is supported in almost all modern browsers.

szatkus··on Ask HN: A major USA bank is storing passwords in cleartext – what to do?
How? My qwerty123 password isn't information directly connected to my identity.
szatkus··on 64 Core Threadripper 3990X CPU Review
Errata: as on one die there are two CCXs, one core can access 16.5MB
szatkus··on 64 Core Threadripper 3990X CPU Review
It's 32MB L3 per die and 512KB L2 per core, they sum them for marketing effect. Effectively one core can access "only" 32.5MB.
szatkus··on N26 will be leaving the UK
Why don't you just say where you moved to? It's quite interesting in context of your earlier comment.
szatkus··on Things I Believe About Software Engineering
Yes, there are some analogs to bridges, but software is much more flexible than concrete.

We can pretend we're building a bridge, but there could be another company, that is more comfortable with changing requirements and may deliver their product later, but more suited to a market.

szatkus··on Things I Believe About Software Engineering
Because it's much easier to change software than for example a bridge. I don't see it as a bad thing as long as all sides are aware that changing requirements changes the deadline as well.
szatkus··on Access to Wikipedia restored in Turkey after more than two and a half years
Why? That's the period when most learning happens!
szatkus··on SQLite Is Serverless
It's a file format with a very mature and nice library around it. At the end of a day it's just fwrite() and fread() with SQL syntax.
szatkus··on 5/3nm Wars Begin
TSMC started using names like N7, N5 etc. recently.
szatkus··on Firefox 72.0
That would be a tough one. There's no information which part of HTML is controls. Maybe they may hardcode this information for some popular players, but that would break as soon as for example Youtube decided to change the layout a bit.
szatkus··on AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3960X and 3970X Review
Note that every core has access to "only" 16MB of cache (well, counting L2 you could say it's 16.5MB). This will change with Zen3 ("32MB+").
szatkus··on AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3960X and 3970X Review
You can downclock and/or undervolt the CPU if you need these many threads, but could bite relatively small single core performance reduction.
szatkus··on Office noise bothers some people more than others
I don't know which group suits me. When I'm concentrated I don't care about my surrounding.
szatkus··on To motivate people, talk about the context of the work to be done
For me, talking with my client over Slack or Skype about the task works. Suddenly some uninteresting thing defined only by a JIRA issue becomes something more. Some feature which provides real business value with context.

That's one of the reasons why I work where I work, because PMs don't stand between us and the clients.

szatkus··on Sunsetting Python 2
Funnily enough, Latin became relatievely stable because people stopped using it outside the Church. After the fall of the Rome it quickly transformed into French, Spanish, Italian etc.
szatkus··on Intel to Launch Core I9-9900KS Next Month: 5 GHz on All Cores
I would be surprised if they haven't. i9-9900KS is still based on renamed Skylake core from 2016 scarred by Spectre mitigations at 14nm optimized to death.

My guess is that they were too optimistic with 10nm and no one started an alternative project on 14nm when the time was right.

They already claim +18% IPC on Ice Lake (because they basically dropped at least one generation and fixed security issues at least partially). When they resolve problems with the process (either by succeeding with 7nm or switching to TSMC) they will be very likely competetive again.

szatkus··on Intel to Launch Core I9-9900KS Next Month: 5 GHz on All Cores
Processes aren't dependant on previous ones. For example AMD screwed up with 65nm, but 45nm were just fine (although under GloFo, but the work had started much earlier).

If the next process won't work their only option would be to switch to TSMC.

szatkus··on Intel to Launch Core I9-9900KS Next Month: 5 GHz on All Cores
We've gained more from IPC improvements (like 5-15% per generation) than clocks.
szatkus··on Flight risk: can we take the carbon out of air travel?
Butchered "ethical"?
szatkus··on How Web Content Can Affect Power Usage
Funnily when I tried this on HN the debugger stopped at React Developer Tools.

I disabled the extension, I don't even use it anymore.

szatkus··on Beyond Meat and KFC partner to test fried plant-based ‘chicken’
Thanks. Weird that they described it as "Kotlet z białka grochu". I didn't know it's based on pea protein, the brand is much more recognizable.
szatkus··on Beyond Meat and KFC partner to test fried plant-based ‘chicken’
Could you tell me where exactly?
szatkus··on Beyond Meat and KFC partner to test fried plant-based ‘chicken’
Is there any plans to expand Beyond Meat, well, beyond USA?
szatkus··on The Amazon Is Not the 'Lungs of the World'
I thought that people like Macron have staff that could fact check whatever he's going to share. It's not that it changes the message, but mistakes like this could be used by someone to undermine his claim.
szatkus··on Show HN: YouTube Decade – The most-viewed videos posted 10 years ago
There are videos with billions of views, I doubt that much fraction of the planet saw them.

I imagine it would horrible performance-wise. You would need to store list of browser fingerprints and check it on every view.

szatkus··on Swap, swap, swap, and bad places to work
This is annoying on Android. System normally would kill (or suspend or whatever Android exactly does in those circumstances) other applications if Firefox ate too much of memory. And I would be happy with that, but unfortunately under memory pressure Firefox kills less important tabs. With memory hog in the backgrounds (these wonderful mobile games) I can jump between maybe 2 or 3 tabs before Firefox starts killing.
