szatkus··on Rockstar is selling cracked game copies on Steam
This was even more confusing for me, because the versions of those games I played were usually already cracked and accepted any input. So I was wondering what's the point.
szatkus··on I Can Eat Glass
There's even PIE and Sumerian, hilarious.
szatkus··on Ask HN: How do you look for jobs in 2023?
Huh? You could just say that you got a first job in tech when you were 35 or something.
szatkus··on One week of empathy training (2019)
I would probably use the sign language interpreter option and write down what I want to say on my phone or on paper.

(unless they have some weird policy to only serve customers who use sign language)

szatkus··on New study reveals most classic video games are unavailable
But that's rarely a case. There are people maintain huge packages with thousands of old games. I can only think about maybe one or two titles that I couldn't find on the internet after some search. Besides, if a game is really obscure, chances for a legal release are close to zero.
szatkus··on JavaScript Gom Jabbar
This. The whole comment feels like self-inflicted damage. We have a special repository for various template projects and when we need to create a new project we copy one from there. Sure, it's not bleeding edge, but also not legacy as we bump dependencies from time to time and sometimes replace tools with newer ones.

I admit, it would be nice to have something like Maven Archetype to have things a bit more formalized, but for most of the time a good old copy-paste works well enough.

szatkus··on AMD EPYC 97x4 “Bergamo” CPUs: 128 Zen 4c CPU Cores for Servers, Shipping Now
Geographical names aren't copyrighted, so it's a safe choice. Before that they used names of various rivers around the world. Intel does something similar, but they make up fictional names based on real places. Nvidia uses names of famous scientists.
szatkus··on Windows NT on 600MHz machine opens apps instantly. What happened?
Some of that bloat is useful. Windows indexes files in the background, which would choke a single-core machine with HDD for sure. Thanks to that I can quickly access my files... well, so long as Windows is able to find the correct thing...
szatkus··on Historical code from reddit.com
I used Reddit before the new UI and... also prefer the new one. It's much better for browsing funny memes. But I don't use Reddit for "serious" stuff. There are subreddits for topics I'm interested in, but I would spend most of my day correcting people if I was subscribed there, because they are so bad. Funny cats are ok though.
szatkus··on FreeBSD spends 7% of its boot time running a bubblesort on its SYSINITs
Lesson here is to profile your software at some point.

I'm playing a game (Fenyx Rising) and after launching it I always wonder why "Checking for additional content" screen takes 20-30 seconds. I'm pretty sure it should be just a single request.

szatkus··on Wine 8.5
When I used Wine around 20 years ago it was roullete if the application even starts. A few years ago I realized that it mostly works. Sure, some random little things could not work, some textures could be glitched, but I was confident that at least it will start. And it's constantly getting better (with some occasional regressions here and there, but it's bound to happen).
szatkus··on BBC Modi Documentary Removal
At this point I got used to that kind of story.
szatkus··on AMD, Intel, and Nvidia Reportedly Slash Orders with TSMC
It would take a lot of time and money to create anything competetive with Nvidia and AMD's offerings. It took Intel over a decade and their dGPUs still aren't very good.

GPUs are insanely complex and the drivers are full of hacks (even per game basis, a driver could swap shaders with ones written by Nvidia/AMD if it detects you're playing the newest popular title). The threshold to enter the market is incredibly high.

szatkus··on Python 3.11 Delivers
Even 3.5 is noticebly faster than 2.7 last time I checked.
szatkus··on Linux Kernel Has Been Forcing Different Behavior for Processes Starting with “X”
Well, you chose a weird point for that example, because Java 9 is where the most Java projects break.
szatkus··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (September 2022)

  Location: Poznań, Poland
  Remote: Ok
  Willing to relocate: Yes
Technologies: Nest.js, Spring, Angular, some React
  Résumé/CV: on request
Email: just add Gmail to my username
Java developer converted recently to a Node.JS developer. Few years of past experience as a frontend (although I try to keep my saw sharp). Over 10 years of experience total. I'm interested in a full-stack position. Looking for interesting opportunities.
szatkus··on TSMC to begin 3nm chip production next month
Not accidentally, that's the plan.

szatkus··on TSMC to begin 3nm chip production next month
That wouldn't work. Transistors density depends on what you're going to build. And there are other variations between processes.
szatkus··on How normal am I?
Same. Their algorithm is broken.
szatkus··on In Poland, there is a LARP group that roleplays as contemporary Americans
Couple years ago there was a Worms LARP in Poland. Yes, the game. People dressed up as worms, there were rules about movement in each turn, throwing granades etc.

szatkus··on Benefits of Not Using an IDE
In my current organization I saw a project, where there is no Maven. The build system is a couple of configuration files for Eclipse IDE and that's the only way to run it. I'm glad I didn't have to do anything around that.
szatkus··on Playdate pre-orders begin in July
You can but Nintendo Switch Lite for $200.
szatkus··on EU bans Belarusian airlines from European skies

szatkus··on Baltic airlines reroute flights to avoid Belarus airspace
Huh? Why US airspace is so extended?

I found a map for that https://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/headquarters_offices/ab...

szatkus··on A “perfect coronal mass ejection” could be a nightmare
I'm not a virusologist, but I read that Spansh flu would be beaten pretty quickly with modern knowledge and procedures. COVID's advantage is that it's not that lethal and often asymptomatic.
szatkus··on Babel is used by millions, so why are we running out of money?
Interesting that his contributions apparently declined when he went full-time.
szatkus··on Pangolin – Mobile AMD laptop with Ryzen CPU and Radeon graphics
I'm a backend developer as well (or maybe full-stack, hard to say) and I switched my 4k to 1080p long time ago, because it wasn't worth it. On the other hand I like good viewing angles and nice colors. Unfortunately the latter isn't too good in basically every laptop I tried and... my current monitor (eh).
szatkus··on Google is now a Visionary Sponsor of the Python Software Foundation
These are different things and really can't exist without each other. CPython developers mainly work on how to make the language better. PyPy is focused on how to make the language faster.
szatkus··on AMD Is Currently Hiring More Linux Engineers
For me everything became much more responsive when I switched to KDE. It seems like GNOME doesn't play well with Linux buggy graphics driver.
