systemtrigger··on How 5 years of reading HN enabled me to build the website for my business
Congrats on launching. CPUStorage seems a smart startup idea. Compelling web site, thoughtful writeup, good luck to you. I lived in Lincoln Park after college, by DePaul, and concur with your premise that the Chicago market is rich enough to warrant such a business. Flyers in dorms, flyers at el stations, flyers everywhere. Facebook page, viral liking. School newspapers might help distribute your story. Stay tenacious.
systemtrigger··on You’re not anonymous. I know your name, email, and company.

systemtrigger··on Checklist for Creating a Landing Page
Better yet, 86 the landing page entirely. Build web technology that doesn't need an artifice on top of it to dramatize itself. The product is the thing.
systemtrigger··on Napolitano: I don't use email at all
> personal email remains personal

If you believe that, why cite Palin's Yahoo! account as an example?

> [Napolitano is] isolated from what [she is] protecting

Her choice is congruent with the limitations of the protocol, and for that I respect her.

systemtrigger··on Ask HN: Review my startup idea
Software will eat the barber. Managing the queue via mobile is a step. The big lucrative API embraces robotics.
systemtrigger··on Amazon now loaning capital to sellers
"Amazon is lending up to $800,000 to some merchants...charging some sellers interest rates of up to 13 percent, but some other merchants are being offered rates as low as 1 percent..."

systemtrigger··on 3Taps Files Countersuit, Says Craigslist Is Anticompetitive
If 3Taps wins, the gold rush is on to create CL interfaces using 3Taps' API. The major roadblock becomes images. Image URLs are provided in 3Taps' API but since no one can hotlink to CL, images are useless. How do you build a better CL interface if you can't use images?

systemtrigger··on Richard Stallman's Bank Account
"Since I object to general surveillance, I use cash for ordinary retail purchases. I use a credit card only in the situations where I am forced to disclose my identity anyway: car rental, airplane tickets, and hotels."

"If you buy by credit card, companies and governments can monitor what you buy, too. So I buy things with cash. If the business says 'no cash', say 'no sale'.

"I never use self-checkout machines unless a store gives me no choice..."

systemtrigger··on The purpose of a startup is very simple. Build, be bought, or fail
Why must a startup be acquired to be judged a success? The aim of a startup is to make the founders rich. If you own something profitable and automated, it does not necessarily follow that your purpose becomes How do I get rid of this?
systemtrigger··on Nootropics – The Facts About “Smart Drugs”
I question his motives because he recommends Piracetam daily dosage of 3 to 5 grams and said it may take up to 6 weeks to realize the effects.

I bought Piracetam on Amazon after someone here on HN recommended it, and for the past 2 months have been taking 800 mg per day. I often skip a few days and have not noticed any addiction symptoms.

I doubled my dosage one day, so took 1600 mg that day, and felt sick to my stomach. When I repeated the 1600 mg experiment again 2 weeks later, I threw up. I am 190 lbs 6 ft, YMMV but I can't imagine taking 3 to 5 grams.

Within a few minutes of swallowing a pill (800 mg) I feel more alert and without the jitteriness that caffeine brings. It seems to improve my general focus, writing, including programming, reading and speaking abilities. As with all self reporting you should absorb mine with salt.

systemtrigger··on Ask HN: You're in an empty room. How do you generate a random number?
Sit down. Pluck as many hair follicles from your body as you can. Arrange the follicles radially around your body. Remove undergarment and sit down on top of it. Choose one follicle, deliberately is fine, move this follicle closer to the undergarment than the other follicles. Stand up and with eyes closed turn as as many rotations as you can without stepping off the undergarment. Sit down. With your smallest finger, push forward from the undergarment outward along the floor. Count the number of follicles between the one closest to the undergarment and the one you pushed outward from the circle. This is your random number, its range is between zero and the total number of follicles you plucked.
systemtrigger··on Ask HN: AirBnB for spouses - viable?
I think you should sort out the nomenclature before you write the business plan. Renting a wife implies sex not house cleaning.
systemtrigger··on Craigslist Quietly Begins Testing The Feature It Sued PadMapper For Adding
Craigslist isn't suing PadMapper for adding maps, it's suing because it sues everyone who republishes CL data (with the exception of generic search engines). CL's real target is 3Taps, which is where PM gets its data. If CL loses the lawsuit, the most valuable piece for developers remaining will be CL images. 3Taps' API includes links to those images, as well as much other useful data, but CL is never going to let developers hotlink to the pictures it hosts. (One could launder those image links through a 3rd party service, but the scope is too large to be undetectable, besides it introduces an ethical issue.) The larger play here, which may in time overtake CL itself, is 3Taps' plan to open the classifieds space in a big way.
systemtrigger··on Ask HN: Do we really need real-time social networks?
A web site is a canvas. You paint, and visitors touch. If all you want to show is one frame of video, which is a static image, that is your prerogative. If the goal of your canvas is to get people to socialize, then it is to your advantage to minimize friction when people attempt to socialize. Why make your audience wait for the show they are there to see? In your question you have elevated the importance of real-time chat above that of posting and commenting, but I say all these concepts are the same. It's just engagement. Invert the question: Under what circumstances should you delay your audience from the goal of your canvas?
systemtrigger··on Ask HN: Where does one find a remarkable designer co-founder?
I think you might be discounting the potential for finding that co-founder here on Ask HN. Consider adding an email address to your profile.
systemtrigger··on Going from $0 to $500k in 1 Year with no VC Money
He said it was recurring revenue and the context in which he said it implied annual. He also said they kept the team down to three until right before launch and only once they had predictable revenue did they start bringing the remainder onboard. He further explained that during development the team performed client work, which would have further offset their costs.
systemtrigger··on Ziptastic: Isn't a zipcode enough?
Very useful. Saves the user 2 to 3 steps. In rare instances where it returns the wrong city, they can modify the returned values. Probably want to skip ziptastic for non U.S. IP addresses.
systemtrigger··on Peter Norvig to teach 'Design of Computer Programs' at Udacity
Enrolled! Is it possible to "audit" the course and just watch the 50 minutes of promised video or will I have to complete homework assignments and such in order to proceed through the lectures?
systemtrigger··on Splash screens == sloth
Yes though I suspect Photoshop's load time could be significantly reduced by limiting the features available at load time. If the method code for the 223rd most popular effect is loaded into memory prior to the user being able to do anything, Adobe is doing it wrong.
systemtrigger··on How to be the 10X programmer
I disagree. Someone found a bug in his essay and he removed it. No point repeating it to future visitors. In general, the final copy of a document does not include strikeouts.
systemtrigger··on How can I teach a bright person with no programming experience how to program?
Yes but K&R is a classic. Its clear style paved the way for programming books ever since. You are correct that the standards have evolved over time but remember the employer in the discussion doesn't need a C programmer, they need a .NET developer. This dude will probably never write a single line of C. Spolsky recommends K&R because it's a good test and it teaches a methodology that serves a student well in .NET. And it's only 228 pages.
systemtrigger··on Lying to yourself
I loved this and ended up reading your other post, CoffeeScript and Learning Languages, as well as several on your Github blog. Willpower and You're Using Caffeine Wrong were favorites too. Keep writing please. :)
systemtrigger··on HTML5 terminal
This is awesome. I dragged an audio file, ran open to play it and a later slide showed the dir, let me adjust playback rate etc. May fork.

Edit: I am late to the game, just found html5rocks. Wow.

systemtrigger··on Ask HN: How to think on the spot and persuade?
Better yet, have long conversations with people who speak well and with whom you resonate.
systemtrigger··on Mozilla launched popcorn.js
Oops! Sorry! :)
systemtrigger··on HTML5 terminal
Terminal.js is good reading. According to his comments there, Eric plans to add tab suggest and html5 audio fallback. I wonder what the end game for this project is and if a text editor is coming - * crosses fingers for vim*.

Edit: The entire deck is impressive. Click the Chrome icon here: http://www.htmlfivewow.com/slide52.

systemtrigger··on Ask HN: Is it okay to do part-time consulting while working a full-time job?
Given your dire financial situation, you should probably treat Google as a backup while negotiating hard with the startup. The Google package is worth ~$100k more per year than the startup's? How steady is freelancing for you? Could you make ~$100k a year at it while holding a full-time job and being a family man?
