systematical··on Virginia police routinely use secret GPS pings to track people’s cell phones
Richmond police force is understaffed (many have left to Chesterfield and Henrico) and the city has serious crime problems in many neighborhoods.
systematical··on Impressions from a first-time Mac user
I've had to use Mac at my last two jobs, before that was Linux for 8 years. I use Linux at home. I just do enough to get by and get my job done in Mac. I know its a bad mentality and I should work to improve my Mac experience, but I just don't enjoy working in that O.S.

Even if I spent the time honing in the UI and terminal. Home Brew is just terrible compared to Apt. That's really the game for me. Maybe my next gig will let me use Linux, but Mac seems to be becoming the only show in town for nix-based development teams and its just sad.

systematical··on Poll: How Old Are You?
Yes there is a bug in this poll.
systematical··on Tools for visualizing a codebase
I've been meaning to give this a try: https://github.blog/2022-02-14-include-diagrams-markdown-fil...
systematical··on FTC sues Intuit for its deceptive TurboTax “free” filing campaign
I stopped using TurboTax after it told me I owed $20,000 to the District of Columbia. I went to an accountant and DC ended up owing me money. Clearly I entered something wrong in TurboTax, but the experience was enough for me to decide paying someone is worth the money and frankly saves me much time as it only takes me minutes to send my information by email and another few minutes to review the results and digitally sign.

Most of my income is from W2 and some 1099 here and there. As others mentioned, America is backwards and the politicians and 1% keep fleecing it towards Romes fate.

I love seeing those on the top get fleeced for a change, unfortunately this will just be a slap on the wrist.

systematical··on Ask HN: Do you find working on large distributed systems exhausting?
I have 15 years xp in dev but all of that was in smaller projects and a small team. I recently took a gig in bigger org with a distributed system and on call etc. It's exhausting and information overload. I'll give myself more time to acclimate but if I feel like this still after a year I'm out.
systematical··on Spotify deletes 70 Joe Rogan episodes
Looks like the media found its new Marilyn Manson and Eminem. The CNN slobfest on rogan is sad. Imagine having the resources to cover the most pressing topics affecting humans and focusing on a guy who believes in DMT elves.
systematical··on 70% of startups offer remote work options as hiring heats up, YC data shows
100% remote and unlimited PTO or don't bother trying to recruit me.
systematical··on Japanese game developer hasn't left the house in 10 years
I am generally fine only interacting with people face-to-face once or twice a month. All my close friends live states away, so we text or talk. I have my dog who I take on walks. And if I absolutely get tired of being alone (about once or twice a month) I go to a bar and strike up conversation. Sure I do vacations and concerts and the like, but in general I prefer being solo.

I've been this way my whole life. I like it, I definitely don't like doing stuff with people more than once a week, too draining on me. Amazingly I even have a girlfriend. She lives two hours away and we switch off who drives to stay the weekend each month.

systematical··on Google no longer producing high quality search results in significant categories
When I am researching something I often use this filter:

site:reddit.com + "search phrase"

At least if I want to hear from "real" people.

systematical··on YouTube TV loses ESPN, ABC and other Disney channels in fee dispute
No, I only used it during football season and now I'm out Monday Night Football. They had already made it harder to set my location to my teams local market (still possible with vpn + location guard but not on TV without chromecasting). With the season nearly over and the Giants season completely over I will probably just cancel early.
systematical··on PHP is worth learning and using
Great article for PHP devs too. I've spent a lot of time in PHP over the years and found there is a bunch of stuff I didn't know about.
systematical··on Stacked changes: how FB and Google engineers stay unblocked and ship faster
I'm confused. The solution seems easy. I have PR #80 in review and my next task depends on it. So I branch off of #80 and just starting working on #94. If there is a holdup on #80 and I want feedback on #94 I just create a draft PR with a note about #80. When #80 gets approved then I'll merge it and merge those changes into PR #94. If it gets messy, I'll just torch #94 and use my IDEs local history and do it manually.

What exactly do stacked changes do?

systematical··on Companies that are avoiding hiring in Colorado
So that's why I ended up being so excited about this job with a Colorado company. Plot twist, developers prefer openings posted by Colorado employers.
systematical··on What the Heck Happened to Rollerblading? (2017)
Thankfully, ever city I've moved to has a roller hockey league. It's a nice cheap alternative to ice hockey, typically 1/2 or less of the cost. Here in DC we have multiple leagues and weekly pickup games, you can find us Wednesdays in front of the white house: http://www.whitehousehockey.com/
systematical··on OnlyFans to block sexually explicit videos starting in October
Isn't that the point of their site?
systematical··on TikTok overtakes Facebook as most downloaded app
Yep this older millenial is staying away. I do enjoy the links my friends send me. I watch and immediately close. "Download the app" they say. Nope. I'm mostly down to just a few minutes of twitter and instagram a day and a bit of reddit. The latter I don't really consider social media, its just what forums evolved into IMO and I've been using those since the late 90s so no difference. Facebook is probably just a few minutes per week. If it wasn't a convenient way to contact a distant connection I'd delete it entirely.
systematical··on Why don't tech companies pay their engineers to stay?
This is something I assume we've all noticed. I just switched companies a couple of months ago and that's the first time the company I was leaving threw the brief case full of money at me. Interesting that 6 months ago I was only worth a 2.3% raise, but suddenly I was now worth a 25% raise. Didn't matter, I believe workers should make unlimited PTO a demand and I let them know that was another reason I was leaving... death to limited time off, long live unlimited.

Back to the point. I imagine somewhere in the next few years I will get another offer at 25% bump after a few years of small 2.5% bumps. Just the way it works. I chuckle, but then I think there must be something I don't know.

systematical··on Windows 96
The startup jingle gave me joy while Start > WTF > YouAreAnIdiot gave me a chuckle.
systematical··on This beach does not exist
The rocks are really bad
systematical··on Open Insulin Foundation
Big Pharma says no. The American solution is go to Mexico or Canada (can't right now).
systematical··on All public GitHub code was used in training Copilot
The solution here seems simple. If you don't want your code used for AI/ML like co pilot, then place a license in your code that explicitly forbids it. Looking at the MIT License as-is, which is used by many maintainers on github, there is nothing that forbids co-pilot. It's easy to add a few sentences to that which explicitly forbid the code being used by AI, ML, code generation or other code automation and calling it something else like the Free For Human Use License.

The sticky part may be: does GitHub T/C overrule these licenses?

systematical··on UFOs: 'These objects show physics we don't understand'
Why?
systematical··on Music for Programming
Some of it sounds like the old ambient genre people were experimenting with in the late 90s early 2ks (perhaps before but thats when i become aware of it). For faster tempo, go dnb.
systematical··on Music for Programming
I love this ui, even if it took me a few extra seconds to figure out. I prefer Drum and Bass for programming.
systematical··on Engineers can disrupt climate change
I've been hopeful about this for a long time, mostly because I think its our only hope. There was a decent Nova episode on this last year: https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/video/can-we-cool-the-planet/

It gave me some doubt, but I'm still hopeful.

systematical··on Preliminary Assessment: Unidentified Aerial Phenomena
What can you really trust in this report? If you take it gave value it's pretty interesting. Given funding we should learn more over the next decade or two.
systematical··on Don't write your own framework
Did this thing not use sessions?
systematical··on Software Developer Shortage Is Coming
The shortage is already here based on my recent job search. I've never felt so popular in my life.
systematical··on Software Developer Shortage Is Coming
If anything we've made it harder. You want a senior engineer who also can run k8s and is well versed in a multitude of languages. Don't get me started on tooling, especially in the JS landscape. I'm amazed engineers pick it up without having grown up with it.
