system16··on Show HN: Kelet – Root Cause Analysis agent for your LLM apps
Also the obligatory “It’s not A. It’s B.”
system16··on Cybertruck's Many Recalls
I think it looks ok from a distance. But up close it looks like a prop from the set of a Back to the Future remake.
system16··on From boom to burst, the AI bubble is only heading in one direction
It wasn’t so long ago that sleazy business types and serial entrepreneurs convinced the media that everything needed to be in the blockchain. Once that fizzled, everything needed to have AI. This too will settle, and the tech will keep trucking along.
system16··on H.R. 7521 – TikTok Ban Bill [pdf]
I say this as someone who is a regular user of TikTok and enjoys it: I don't see why something with the same intent wasn't presented years ago on the grounds of reciprocity. US social media applications have been banned in China for over a decade, so why should Chinese applications be able to flourish in the US?
system16··on The Existential Relief of Having Children
And if it’s not kids it’ll be something else. My mom passed away a few years ago and she commented how she regretted spending so much time doing “outdoorsy” stuff with my stepdad, and wish she’d had spent more time shopping. When you know it’s the end and your options are gone, you’ll always lament what could have been.
system16··on Apple releases MGIE, an AI-based image editing model
I also found that an odd statement. If you need a “why” analysts may not feel confident about Apple’s ability to deliver when it comes to AI, look no further than Siri and Apple Maps.
system16··on A Leaked Memo from Google CEO Sundar Pichai Comes Amidst Employee Discontent
I’m not even kidding when I say ChatGPT could produce a better list of goals for Google.
system16··on Show HN: Just F-Ing Ping
> Modern browsers, believing they are being clever, hide the protocol in the URL bar.

Not all, thankfully. Safari doesn't do this.

system16··on Disney CEO Bob Iger says company's movies have been too focused on messaging
Disney's trend of tossing in a BIPOC LGBT equivalent of "Poochie" in everything they've made in the last few years is the worst kind of pandering. It took audiences speaking with their wallets for Disney to acknowledge this, but i's going to take more than a few words from Iger to instil confidence. There will have to be a shake up at Disney and with their partners, and I would expect Kathleen Kennedy to be pretty high up on the hit list.
system16··on With 1 Sentence, Patagonia Just Gave a Masterclass on How to Treat Your People
Who said this replaces PTO?
system16··on Show HN: I made a dead simple logo maker
Not OP but I entered “real estate” and got an ear with hearing aid, a terminal, a bug with a play button, and a bowl of soup with steam.
system16··on Tesla Cybertruck vs. Porsche 911 drag race
Wonder why they decided to do this against an ICE 911 and not the Porsche Taycan?

> "The Taycan Turbo S will take you from zero to 60 mph in a neck-snapping 2.6 seconds, though Motor Trend and others have clocked it at 2.4 seconds; as fast as a three million dollar Bugatti Chiron (the fastest gasoline-powered car in the world). That is faster by a second than the Tesla Model S."

Oh.

system16··on The Doomed Mission Behind Sam Altman's Shock Ouster from OpenAI
Constantly.

Edit: this prompted me to look into it and in my case I think it's an issue with recent increased protections introduced in Safari. Firefox seems to work for me.

system16··on OpenAI's board has fired Sam Altman
You weren't kidding!

> I'm OK with having failed at this part of the journey. If Groupon was Battletoads, it would be like I made it all the way to the Terra Tubes without dying on my first ever play through.

system16··on Apple announces that RCS support is coming to iPhone next year
> This will work alongside iMessage, which will continue to be the best and most secure messaging experience for Apple users," said an Apple spokesperson.

I could be wrong but I don’t see anything here to suggest non-iMessages will no longer have the “green bubble” like the author assumes.

system16··on COBOL bridge for Node.js
Strange comment for Hacker News. Maybe the author wanted to learn more about COBOL and this was a fun way to explore that and share their findings. Not every personal project needs a business case to justify its existence.
system16··on Sam Bankman-Fried testifies, says he "skimmed over" FTX terms of service
The most surprising thing about this is how bumbling and incoherent SBF appears. Crooked or not I would expect anybody to be able to convince corporate level execs to invest millions would at least be able to sound like they know what they are talking about.
system16··on If Every Brand Is Funny Online, Is Anything Funny?
It irritates me more than it should, but I hate how virtually all major brands and sports teams seem to have the same “voice” on social media now. They all have this “desperate to be hip” and snarky tone of an urban teenager, all express the same restrained support for the social issue of the day (regional accounts may be excluded), and all overuse emoji.
system16··on Driver hits woman in SF, then Cruise driverless car runs her over
It’s because of the nature of some these accidents and incidents by autonomous vehicles being under circumstances that would be very unlikely with even the most careless driver.

They highlight the helplessness and cold hard reality of being at the wrong end of a miscalculation.

So even if the overall number of accidents is less, the number of times a human driver would park on top of a victim of a hit and run and turn on the hazard lights is near zero.

system16··on Musk Fires Entire 'Election Integrity Team' at X
> Mackey conspired with other influential Twitter users and with members of private online groups to use social media platforms, including Twitter, to disseminate fraudulent messages that encouraged supporters of presidential candidate Hillary Clinton to “vote” via text message or social media which, in reality, was legally invalid.

Tricking people into throwing away their vote by casting it through invalid methods is a lot more than "tweeting a meme."

system16··on Hasan Minhaj’s “Emotional Truths”
Wow. I casually enjoyed Minhaj's show on Netflix and the other random places I've seen him pop up. I also thought he'd be a great candidate to take over Trevor Noah's seat on the Daily Show.

But I had no idea about these fabrications or "emotional truths" / lies. Whatever the intent, this is downright emotional manipulation and really paints him in a completely different light to me. I will not be watching anything else he's involved with and hope he disappears into obscurity.

system16··on The new Polaroid I-2 instant camera
There are other much cheaper models. I might not be finding it, but their site doesn't make it immediately apparent what the differences are to justify the huge difference in price: https://www.polaroid.com/en_us/collections/instant-cameras
system16··on 80% of bosses say they regret earlier return-to-office plans
My company forced a three day a week hybrid, despite major pushback from the employees and a lot of resignations after it was implemented. They’re now trying to nudge people to come in every day.

On Mondays and Fridays the CEO comes in, pacing around, unamused the big fancy space is sitting empty.

All the executives want to force full time RTO but of course they come in late (if at all) or leave early whenever they want as nobody monitors their schedule. Rules for thee and not for me.

system16··on WeWork Raises ‘Substantial Doubt’ About Staying in Business
This is so surprisingly candid I don’t think it can be interpreted as anything other than “complete certainty” they will no longer be in business.
system16··on The BBC on Mastodon
Nice to see a presence, but half a dozen accounts and not one that focuses on major news headlines? Aa it stands the unofficial bot that reposts from the Twitter account will still get more interaction from me.
system16··on Tell HN: My Reddit account was banned after adding my subs to the protest
I think Tildes (https://tildes.net) is great. Invite only for now, but easy enough to get one.
system16··on Meta announces its Quest 3 VR headset
If that was the intent, I think they failed miserably. Nothing in that trailer looked even a fraction as fun or high quality as a Nintendo experience. In fact it just reaffirmed why I'd much rather play Mario or Zelda on Switch for a fraction of the price.
system16··on Meta announces its Quest 3 VR headset
> just like what Microsoft did to Google 3 months ago.

Except MS actually did steal Google's thunder. This trailer did nothing but confirm how boring Meta seems and just made me more curious about what Apple's offering will look like.

system16··on Meta announces its Quest 3 VR headset
Weird trailer. None of those games looked all that appealing, and more time was spent showing a person wearing the headset and making exaggerated gestures than the actual software or experience.

I'm not sure who this was for but it did nothing to make me interested in their headset and just confirmed what I already assumed about it.

system16··on Twitter launches new Pro tier for $5000/month
The "Use Cases" they list are hilariously vague and devoid of content.
