sysihyk··on John Carpenter’s “Planaria”: Or, the New Individualism
Caution, though, Watts' set and setting is so excessively decadent dark so he probably broke a knob in case of Blindpraxia, where he introduced no less than vampires(!) and failed to explain them properly effectively making them very flexible dei ex machinis to fix otherwise broken plot.

Blindsight worth reading indeed, depiction of scary aliens is excellent there, Echopraxia is completely disappointing disaster movie in the print form. I'm going to point you at The Island novelette and whole Sunflowers series if you can endure its decadent dark set&setting.

sysihyk··on Clean environment could become U.N. human right
UN can't even provide the very first human right, the freedom of expression. Neither can prevent acts of illegal war. Hence, this is just cheap populism exploiting current hype on "green" agenda.
sysihyk··on Facebook harms children and weakens democracy: ex-employee
Frances Haugen, the former Facebook employee who testified before the Senate commerce committee today, has a history of left-wing activism and is working with the same lawyer who represented the alleged Ukraine whistleblower who sparked the second bogus Trump impeachment.

Haugen testified before the Senate Commerce Committee today after getting the celebrity treatment from the establishment media, including a full-length interview on 60 Minutes.

Haugen, unlike other Facebook whistleblowers who have been ignored by the media, has called for more censorship of the platform, not less — and, according to her remarks at the hearing today, wants the government to step in to make it happen.

Not only that, but she believes that she, and people like her, should be in charge of regulating Facebook.

“There needs to be a regulatory home where someone like me could do a tour of duty after working at a place like [Facebook], and have a place to work on things like regulation,” said Haugen.

> hurr-durr inhumane laws

Dura lex, sed lex.

Laws were humane enough when allowed one to run for president

sysihyk··on [dead]
So, in a nutshell, presidential candidate is a felon.
sysihyk··on John Carpenter’s “Planaria”: Or, the New Individualism
I prefer John Carpenter’s “Hoax Watch”, tho :)
sysihyk··on Ransomware gangs are complaining that other crooks are stealing their ransoms
Its OK as long as gossip fit "progressive" agenda and/or comes from renowned "progressive" newspaper Pravda. Otherwise it is a racis' conspiracy.

That WaPo Krebs article links malware analysis which goes into dire detail on how that ransomware probes for Volume Shadow Copy (via amateur WMI) yet... omits keyboard layout probe method(s) at all (there are at least 3 possible ways)

sysihyk··on E-Ink Magic Calendar that runs off a battery powered Raspberry Pi
Problem is - three-pigment e-ink was a new tech 10 years ago and still of luxury niche.
sysihyk··on Whistleblower says Facebook is misleading the public
Honestly, I'm finding this headline more straightforward and matching the reality since Dr. Zuckerberg started his practice giving medical advices on Cow ID right and left.
sysihyk··on Facebook whistleblower says she wants to fix company, not harm it
> crazy conspiracy theory that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction

Don't blame NYT, they are just like proverbial broken clock which displays correct time twice per day. WMDs from Hussein's stockpile were still used in Syrian War until recently by Baath Socialist militants, the pathway for sarin is pretty clear.

sysihyk··on Show HN: Smallest and fastest command-line coloring library on the internet
I'm still thinking what library which can trim whitespace from the left of string is most useful package for node.js
sysihyk··on How much information can a small image contain?
Very very misleading.

First, article tried to assess information capacity in Shannon style, completely disregarding what signal is (a) two-dimensional and (b) highly redundant, that is, ignoring the traits of being an image.

Second, article taken too much liberties while mixing photorealistic and pixel-art images. The latter is really an art, since there is no formally defined ("machine") transform between these two types. And last but not least these types have significantly different information density profiles.

No DSP curiosity here.

sysihyk··on Ransomware gangs are complaining that other crooks are stealing their ransoms
There is no evidence to back this claim.

Instead, there are stats indicating that The Mother Of All Hoaxes definitely ISN'T safe haven infosec-wise.

Additionally, Krebs completely forgot what there is war between Ukraine and Russia, so there are no reasons for such alleged protective measures any more.

sysihyk··on Ransomware gangs are complaining that other crooks are stealing their ransoms
> is real and accurate just as most of the reporting is on Russia

Except when it turn out to be fake news as it usually happens. For instance, linked malware research paper doesn't mentions alleged keyboard layout probe and never reveal how this probe to be performed. So, bogus.

> workarounds e.g. adding an additional keyboard

Just as bogus as placing succulent plant to "protect from computer radiation"

sysihyk··on X-rays reveal censored portions of Marie Antoinette’s letters to Swedish count
Makes me wonder how destructive this X-ray scan was.
sysihyk··on Ransomware gangs are complaining that other crooks are stealing their ransoms
This implies there Russian Conspiracy members are actually caring about their domestic cybercrime which is clearly not true.
sysihyk··on Ransomware gangs are complaining that other crooks are stealing their ransoms
Honestly, this looks like yet another Russian Hoax iteration. Also, made me to figure Brian Krebs is merely a journalist, while real infosec researcher is Chris Krebs.
sysihyk··on Apple and Disney among companies backing groups against US climate bill
> it’s high time we act

> it’s time we suck it up

Who are those "we" exactly? And why the other people have to pay for that desperate stuff?

Hint: you could go out and plant a tree instead.

sysihyk··on Apple and Disney among companies backing groups against US climate bill
Back to boozefed please
sysihyk··on Who Censored Marie Antoinette's Letters?
Leftists and censorship are always coming hand to hand.
sysihyk··on The Wayforward Machine
Clenched fist? Seriously? I'd better buy shares in these scary "fact copyrighting corporations"
sysihyk··on Six more zeros are to be removed from Venezuelan currency
Marxism Kills

Death, Starvation and Destruction

sysihyk··on iPhone remains findable after power off
It is Real Time Clock (RTC) chip just as found in ATX motherboards since like 1997, very primitive and low powered, so it can't spy on you, just provides autonomous time source. Power-on alarm(s) is RTC's feature as well, merely comparing preset alarm time register(s) with current time register.
sysihyk··on Cloudflare's Disruption
CPU isn't cheap, typical PHP+MySQl pages are ridiculously heavy, that's why Cloudflare got themselves into business.

Usually DoS attack doesn't exhaust the bandwidth, come on..

sysihyk··on 'Google' is most searched word on Bing
This sounds like IT Crowd joke.
sysihyk··on Deaf Man Who Couldn't Hear Police Commands Was Tased and Spent 4 Months in Jail
It fits general "progressive" agenda, so exception applies.
sysihyk··on Deaf Man Who Couldn't Hear Police Commands Was Tased and Spent 4 Months in Jail
Yet another case when counterfeit currency brings one in trouble...
