synaesthesisx··on Diffusion Models for Robotics Control
This is exactly what we need to enable true embodied AGI - think “mirror neurons” but for robotics.

General-purpose humanoid robots capable of interfacing with our physical world will be one of humanity’s most pivotal innovations.

* [If you’re working at the intersection of machine perception & embodied AGI let’s get in touch!] *

synaesthesisx··on Gemini AI
Anyone know if they're using TPUs for inference? It'll be real interesting if they're not bottlenecked by Nvidia chips.
synaesthesisx··on Show HN: Onsites.fyi - Curated Big Tech Interview Experiences
A former colleague of mine is at Meta thanks to this exact strategy. There are also apparently leaked question banks available to facilitate the process!
synaesthesisx··on Amazon Introduces Q, an A.I. Chatbot for Companies
The difference is, we're soon going to have autonomous agents that do all the PRs for us.
synaesthesisx··on Normal Operating Sounds
It's astounding just how quiet EV's are; they can make you hyperaware of other noises (hence why this page exists).
synaesthesisx··on Cicero: The first AI to play at a human level in Diplomacy (2022)
IMO, one of the most interesting problem spaces is in cooperative behaviors between autonomous agents.
synaesthesisx··on OpenAI researchers warned board of AI breakthrough ahead of CEO ouster
Remember, about a month ago Sam posted a comment along the lines of "AI will be capable of superhuman persuasion well before it is superhuman at general intelligence, which may lead to very strange outcomes".

The board was likely spooked by the recent breakthroughs (which were most likely achieved by combining transformers with another approach), and hit the panic button.

Anything capable of "superhuman persuasion", especially prior to an election cycle, has tremendous consequences in the wrong hands.

synaesthesisx··on We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam to return to OpenAI as CEO
If we achieve AGI it has the potential to capture most (if not all) economic value. Larry Summers was a deliberate choice indeed.
synaesthesisx··on Sam Altman, Greg Brockman and others to join Microsoft
Yes, however they’ll be shielded from lawsuits from OpenAI at Microsoft.
synaesthesisx··on [dead]
This is unfortunate, and likely stems from the recent accident that caused the loss of their CA license suspension, which may have jeopardized their upcoming fundraising.

Perhaps Kyle will end up on the OpenAI board.

synaesthesisx··on Greg Brockman quits OpenAI
What I find incredibly odd is the lack of a Microsoft board seat, considering their large ownership in OpenAI. Something does not add up.
synaesthesisx··on OpenAI's board has fired Sam Altman
I don’t think this is necessarily what happened (the CFO would certainly be implicated and it appears they were spared).
synaesthesisx··on Tell HN: ChatGPT with GTP-4 has been unusably slow since the latest update
Are you noticing this with the API too? I’ve observed inconsistencies in response time via API (v4-T)

I’m a senior technical product manager with over a decade of experience working in tech as a SWE, founder, product manager. I’ve built and scaled products & teams for companies in all sorts of industries (most recently in the healthcare/health tech space), and thrive in fast-paced environments where I'm able to drive engineering initiatives. I'm a hacker at heart, and love to prototype "moonshots" (currently working on a use case using LLM's for extracting insights from unstructured medical data).

I’m predominantly interested in technical product management/engineering management opportunities at companies in the AI space, but am open-minded to any organization whose mission I align with - ideally leveraging technology for accelerating human progress.

synaesthesisx··on WeWork nears bankruptcy
Precisely. I do utilize coworking spaces quite a bit, however I tend to go in on days where I don't have many calls scheduled. Also, my home office setup (ultra wide external monitor + 4K external camera and mic etc) wins when I actually need to be productive.

Yes, most coworking spots have phone booths, but they can tend to be claustrophobic and limited in availability.

synaesthesisx··on Ex-Finance developers mock McKinsey's monitoring metrics
McKinsey sells the "idea" that they're experts that know what they're doing, rather than actually doing a good job.
synaesthesisx··on John le Carré's 'The Spy Who Came in from the Cold' is the ultimate spy novel
The adaptation of "The Night Manager" is excellent IMO. It's a miniseries of sorts (only 6 episodes), however Hugh Laurie & Tom Hiddleston deliver top-notch performances. It's available on Prime Video and other streaming services in the US.
synaesthesisx··on European Airline Adds Child Free Zones for $49
That's per flight. Invest in a pair of noise-cancelling headphones and it will pay for itself. Personally, I can't imagine air travel without them.
synaesthesisx··on Ask HN: My mother is slowly losing her eyesight, how to prepare?
If it happens to be AMD, there are promising new treatments in testing. This was just posted today:

synaesthesisx··on Nvidia announces financial results for second quarter fiscal 2024
I’ve been a longtime Nvidia investor (since ~2014 or so) and have no plans on selling anytime soon. Their market dominance will be tough to unseat, and the only other company making strides in silicon is Apple.
synaesthesisx··on Show HN: LlamaGPT – Self-hosted, offline, private AI chatbot, powered by Llama 2
How this compare to just running llama.cpp locally?
synaesthesisx··on How Zoom’s terms of service and practices apply to AI features
I wonder if they allow opting-out. My last company was in the healthcare space, and we used Zoom for all internal communication. Often this could contain sensitive information (PII etc) which would likely be a privacy violation if exposed.
synaesthesisx··on Uber posts first quarterly net profit
Also, if you dine in you generally spend 25%+ markup (tip, service charges etc).
synaesthesisx··on Origin of correlated isolated flat bands in LK99
Something incredible to note: it took around 5 years from when the transistor was first developed, to when it started to get integrated into consumer goods. LK-99 appears promising (and at the very least, may lead to other tangentially interesting discoveries), and if this is “it”, we could see commercial applications far sooner, especially if the synthesis is relatively straightforward. We couldn’t be on a more exciting timeline.
synaesthesisx··on Google Med-Palm M: Towards Generalist Biomedical AI
A couple of years ago I had built a product for health systems in the computer vision space - and ran into the challenge of trying to commercialize it (with no luck). Even if the product/technology is excellent, the regulatory hurdles & red tape make it insanely difficult to get this sort of stuff commercialized in a healthcare context.
synaesthesisx··on Where did our belief in abundance come from?
The greatest thing about technology is that it will ultimately enable superabundance. We have a duty to leverage technology for the greater good of humanity & civilization.
synaesthesisx··on Guide to running Llama 2 locally
This is usable, but hopefully folks manage to tweak it a bit further for even higher tokens/s. I’m running Llama.cpp locally on my M2 Max (32 GB) with decent performance but sticking to the 7B model for now.
synaesthesisx··on LeCun: Qualcomm working with Meta to run Llama-2 on mobile devices
This is pretty much to go head-to-head with Apple (and Samsung). Both are making leaps and strides using “neural coprocessors” and the like for running models on mobile hardware. Mobile edge computing is where we’re going to see a lot of use cases that enable functionality while maintaining data privacy & performance.

Keep in mind “mobile devices” extends past just smartphones, onto wearables/headsets as well.

synaesthesisx··on Apple Tests ‘Apple GPT,’ Develops Generative AI Tools to Catch OpenAI
Exactly. Apple is likely to take the edge computing approach (in fact, they already do - try searching your iPhone's photo library for "sports car" or "cat"; I'm fairly certain this all happens on-device using the neural engine).

In addition to the leaps and bounds in silicon, Apple has also quietly been making acquisitions in the space (like $200M+ for Xnor.ai - focusing on low-power ML intended for edge computing applications).

They are likely relentlessly optimizing, and in typical Apple fashion will not be first to release something, but will do a killer job in distributing it to hundreds of millions of devices/people at once, with a UX that's thoughtfully polished and accessible to all.
