synaesthesisx··on Llama 2
I fully believe LLM’s and vector DB’s etc will be largely commodotized - in my opinion this is inevitable, and this is another step in the right direction.
synaesthesisx··on Anchor Brewing Was San Francisco
The first one I had was in Boston well over a decade ago - many bottles were consumed during undergrad.
synaesthesisx··on Is Forbes 30 under 30 a scam? [video]
It's pretty well established that folks pay to get featured on that list.

Forbes is not exactly a reputable organization; it's the clickbait of finance. Take one look at their website and this will be quite apparent.

synaesthesisx··on Code Interpreter will be available to all ChatGPT Plus users over the next week
Code Interpreter is great for "quick and dirty" data analysis & visualizations. I've seen it struggle with larger datasets (not sure what the current limit is) but I can certainly see this sort of stuff replacing basic BI at organizations.

Microsoft is working on embedding this sort of stuff into what they call Fabric - which is essentially meant to be PowerBI on steroids. I know in the current preview, you can interact with data using a chat-like interface ("Show me our revenue for the last 12 months sorted by customer") .

synaesthesisx··on France’s Mistral AI raises a $113M seed round to take on OpenAI
A friend of mine just got a 7-digit offer at an AI company, so yes, we are so back
synaesthesisx··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
Again, for those complaining about price - the current (and far less capable) Microsoft HoloLens is also $3500. I've personally used and interacted with the HoloLens and was thoroughly impressed, however the leaps in optics & tracking Apple has pulled off make the Vision Pro quite compelling.
synaesthesisx··on Tesla's Model 3 cheaper than Toyota's Camry in California with tax benefits
From my understanding most other manufacturers either have slim margins, or are losing money on every EV sold. I sometimes worry that Tesla will dominate the EV market, as it's extremely difficult to compete at the current price point of the 3/Y.

I have a MYP and think it's an insane bang for the buck - to the point where I'm considering getting another.

synaesthesisx··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
I’ll go out on a limb and say it will be far more popular than people think. I’m ready to preorder one (although perhaps I fall into the enthusiast & early adopter category).

This can’t be compared to other headsets out there, and is rather in an entirely different product category.

synaesthesisx··on TV doctors say annual checkups save lives – real doctors call bullshit (2016)
A big problem with healthcare is it tends to be reactive rather than proactive; folks generally tend to seek out care only when they’re having issues.
synaesthesisx··on Tesla Model Y overtakes Corolla to be world’s best-selling car in 2023
I bought one of these and love it - it’s the best vehicle I have ever owned. The supercharger network eliminates any range anxiety or dealing with slow or barely functional chargers. Yes, the spartan interior leaves a bit to be desired, but where it lacks in physical qualities it makes up for in continuously improving software & UX.

The experience of using it is a joy daily, simply put (and I’ve owned other EV’s previously).

I will be getting a Model X next.

synaesthesisx··on Synthea: Open-source synthetic patient generation
I’ve worked at the intersection of AI & healthcare for years and this has been an excellent tool I’ve leveraged in the past; synthetic data is particularly helpful in the context of healthcare!
synaesthesisx··on Here’s Why That Rivian R1T Repair Cost $42,000 After Just a Minor Fender-Bender
If this ends up being the case, expect the costs to insure these things to skyrocket soon.
synaesthesisx··on Windows 11 in Svelte
Just tried this on Vercel…the funny thing is it’s actually more responsive than real Win11..
synaesthesisx··on Microsoft Freezes Salaries for 2023
Yes, there are tons of companies out there that pay much better than Microsoft (that most people have likely never heard of).
synaesthesisx··on 1990 Impact Electric Drag Race [video]
I’m quite fond of the EV1 - in some ways, it was the predecessor to the Chevy Volt (which also was unfortunately discontinued). The Volt powertrain wouldn’t have been possible without GM’s innovation, which also inspired many other manufacturers to invest in R&D on EV and hybrid technologies.

There’s a documentary called “Who Killed the Electric Car” (2006) which is fantastic. EV1, you have a special place in our hearts!

synaesthesisx··on I’m ready to trade in my electric car
Agreed. I never have issues predictably charging my Tesla on long trips. Range anxiety is non-existent. The supercharger network is glorious.

When I tried to charge my previous EV (a non-Tesla) at public chargers, half they time they didn’t work, or charged at unpredictably slow rates.

synaesthesisx··on State of AI co-author: we must slow down the race to god-like AI
No - absolutely not. Slowing down innovation in the face with vague “existential risk” fearmongering is absurd.

We should be pursuing the opposite, and accelerating efforts to build what will be some of the most transformative technology humanity has ever developed (and some could argue, NOT building has its own existential risks).

synaesthesisx··on Generative Agents: Interactive Simulacra of Human Behavior
Some of the most interesting work in this space is in the “shared” memory models (in most cases today, vector db’s). Agents can theoretically “learn” and share memories with the entire fleet, and develop a collective understanding & memory accessible by the swarm. This can enable rapid, “guided” evolution of agents and emergent behaviors (such as cooperation).

We’re going to see some really, really interesting things unfold - the implications of which many haven’t fully grasped.

synaesthesisx··on Generative Agents: Interactive Simulacra of Human Behavior
They can’t vote, but what if they figure out that they can influence human votes?
synaesthesisx··on If AI scaling is to be shut down, let it be for a coherent reason
The arguments for decelerating AI development invoke fear-mongering and cite “existential risk”, which is a fallacy. We’re talking about LLMs, not AGI here (which is quite a ways out, realistically). If anything - we should be accelerating development toward the goal of AGI, as the implications for humanity are profound.
synaesthesisx··on The collapse of companies like SVB is triggering demand for corporate merch
This is what's currently happening with Twitter (since they laid off the entirety of HR).
synaesthesisx··on A Brief History of Parafilm
Parafilm is permeable to gases, and generally you don’t want to enable oxidization with most foods. A modified, coated version of it would be a great consumer alternative however.
synaesthesisx··on Ask HN: What was the best meal you had this year?
A great omakase is a truly memorable experience.
synaesthesisx··on Legacy Update: Fix Windows Update on Windows XP, Vista, Server 2008, 2003, 2000
Comparing physical goods to technology is not exactly a fair comparison - technology such as operating systems has moved significantly in 20 years in terms of features, performance, security etc. Running a 20+ year old, unsupported OS is a security concern.
synaesthesisx··on Legacy Update: Fix Windows Update on Windows XP, Vista, Server 2008, 2003, 2000
It amazes me how many machines there are still out there, connected to the internet, running Windows XP (a 21+ year old OS)
synaesthesisx··on Show HN: Chrome extension to display ChatGPT response besides Google Search
Google search has degraded so much (thanks to blogspam gaming SEO, and Google as a predominantly ads business optimizing for...well ads), that most of us likely append "reddit" or "site:reddit.com" to our Google search queries to get better quality results.

ChatGPT is so insanely good, especially for actual knowledge - that it will likely replace Google as the default search for many people.

synaesthesisx··on Tell HN: I asked ChatGPT to build a login form in React and it gave me the code
Wait until the GPT-4 version is out, and seniors are in trouble too. People don’t realize, this is still in its infancy.
synaesthesisx··on CT scan shows there's still lots of toner left in an “empty” cartridge
Generally some folks will re-use the proprietary cartridge, but manually refill them. In the mid 2000s I used to do this with inkjet cartridges - you could remove some of the labels/wrapper on the cartridge to expose a port that was accessible via syringe, and refill the reservoirs with cheap ink.
synaesthesisx··on How Precision Time Protocol is being deployed at Meta
Yes! I had no idea Meta actually invested in innovation/engineering like this. I always assumed most of their work was just in ad tech & "metaverse".
synaesthesisx··on The US will finally allow adaptive beam headlights on new cars
Side note - anyone know how to disable the annoying auto high beams on their vehicle? A recent software update appears to automatically toggle high beams (which do turn off when oncoming traffic is detected however it's still annoying). It appears that this is necessary for autopilot to function - so I can't just disable it entirely :/
