symmetricsaurus··on Rosetta catches dusty organics
No, Rosetta is already in orbit around the comet. By the principle of conservation of momentum the impact will not change the total momentum of the system (comet plus spacecraft).

The changes in trajectory happens when the engines are used on the spacecraft.

symmetricsaurus··on New class of galaxy has been discovered, made almost entirely of dark matter
Dark matter can explain: the large scale evolution of the universe (together with dark energy but whatever), rotational velocities of galaxies, gravitational lensing and other phenomena. No other theory explains all of these things as well or simply.

Also, dark matter is not really so exotic and weird. We already know of one type of dark matter particle, neutrinos. To think that there are other more massive particles that only interact through gravity and the weak force isn't much of a strectch in that light.

symmetricsaurus··on Deep Reinforcement Learning: Pong from Pixels
These videos by Tom7 are indeed great. They don't display the use of deep learning though; the method is something quite different [1].

Maybe you could use the objective functions of Tom7 to determine which moves are good or bad in order to train a policy network?

All the lowercase letters 't' on your page looks weird for me. They're a little bit smaller than all other letters.

symmetricsaurus··on We Need a Better PC
I don't agree at all with the new Thinkpad keyboards being garbage. The old ones were nice (maybe even nicer than the new ones) but the new ones are still the best laptop keyboards in the market at the moment.

The keyboard has no flex or mushiness. The keys have some resistance and a nice feel when depressing them. Finally the keys are slightly curved inwards so that the fingesrs easily find the centers of the keys.

Still, I've heard of a lot of people that don't like the new keyboards. Maybe there are different versions for different models? I've only used W530 and T440s.

symmetricsaurus··on Bad USB-C cable destroys laptop
Killed a laptop when plugging in my phone (with the old 30 pin connector). Turns out a bit of foil from a wrapper had become stuck in the slot on the phone.

Since this was in the bad old day the laptop was fixable for under $200 so it wasn't too bad.

Still, makes sense to keep an eye on what you plug into your computer.

symmetricsaurus··on How to Discover a Galaxy with a Telephoto Lens
If you'd like to try out radio astronomy you can use SALSA: http://vale.oso.chalmers.se/salsa/welcome

You get access to a 2.3 m radio telescope for free, you just need to book a time slot.

symmetricsaurus··on Even the LastPass Will Be Stolen
I know that this isn't what you asked for but one way to dramatically reduce the attack surface is to not upload your passwords anywhere and not sync them between devices.

Just keep the passwords on your phone (in a password manager) and type them by hand on your computer. It works well enough since you always keep your phone with you (at least I do).

symmetricsaurus··on Sweden is Out of Housing for Refugees
I think that now it is time for other European countries to step up and take their responsibility. Many countries seem focused on keeping all migrants/refugees out and in that way shuffling the responsibility to some other country.

It isn't reasonable to expect Turkey and Lebanon to take all refugees from Syria for example.

Also the responsibility of airlines for paying the costs of returning anyone who is not allowed to enter a country should be removed. It is a very hard-line rule that creates a lot of unnecessary suffering and also creates a huge black market (trafficking). [1]

symmetricsaurus··on Sweden is Out of Housing for Refugees
Swedish migration minister Morgan Johansson now says that Sweden can no longer guarantee housing for refugees [1][2].

This is a new development as the previous official line has been that the situation is strained but under control.

There should be errata to the errata since the OPERA result of neutrinos traveling faster than c has since been refuted [1].

Add an instruction that drops or picks up a parachute(i. e. it flips the state).

Then you should get something that is equivalent to boolfuck (1-bit brainfuck) which is Turing complete.

symmetricsaurus··on Restoration of defocused and blurred images (2012)
Blurring or mosaicing is not very secure at all [1]. To be more safe block out sensitive information with solid black. (Just remember to not leak any information in the metadata, like an embedded thumbnail.)

symmetricsaurus··on Stunning Photographs of Fractals in Nature
I agree that most of these pictures are not of fractals.

I would add the lily pad, thinking cactus, cabbage and fern to the list of fractals. There are only a couple of octaves/iterations in each but there is some self similarity there.

Otherwise there are probably just a lot of Fibonacci spirals(although I haven't counted them).

For more on Fibonacci spirals see this[1] excellent video series by Vi Hart.

Can't view Apple's videos since I don't have Quicktime, so I can't compare there.

Edit: Apple's page is prettier than Microsoft's.

symmetricsaurus··on I Just Poured Water on my Scanner
If I could put the glass into the liquid it would be fairly easy. But, isn't the glass stuck to the top of a flatbed scanner in this case? Makes it a bit hard to put it into a liquid without breaking the scanner.
symmetricsaurus··on I Just Poured Water on my Scanner
If the scratches are on the glass it could work even better to use a liquid with the same refractive index as the glass. That should make the scratches go away completely.

One option is glycerin as can be seen in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNWCB_GoQA4 (maybe it only works with pyrex glass ?)

Another option is to mix to fluids together, one with a higher index of refraction and one with lower. That way you can tune it to your particular scanner (although I would think most are the same).

How you see if your mix has the same refractive index as the glass I haven't figured out yet.

symmetricsaurus··on Actually Unlock Your Door with “OK Google, Open Sesame”
A similar thing was done with Siri and a garage door a while ago: http://delian.io/siri-open-the-garage

It's curious that in both cases you actually have to create a special app to enable any custom behavior from your phone. It would be nice if there were a bit more extensibility in these automated assistant/search/whatever thingies.

symmetricsaurus··on How Can an Aircraft Disappear Over the Ocean?
Why not create a mesh network using the planes themselves. Surely most planes must be in line of sight with several other planes even over the ocean. That way they could broadcast their position among other things.

symmetricsaurus··on Top Martin Gardner Physics Stumpers
Sure. Add an extra dimension with coordinate w to 3d space.

Then just rotate around the (x,y)-plane until z -> -z and w -> -w. Everything in the (x,y)-plane stays the same and z has been inverted.

symmetricsaurus··on Top Martin Gardner Physics Stumpers
I think you are mostly right.

Some corrections and further explanations (no time limit):

1. A mirror flips the direction perpendicular to the mirror. Left is still left and right is still right, e. g., your left hand will still be on your left side in the mirror. But, your mirror image will be looking in the opposite direction compared to you.

7. The pigeons are flying around inside the truck. Doing this they exert a force on the air around them which in turn will exert a force on the truck containing the air. On average this force will balance the weight of the pigeons. Also, 200 pigeons at maybe a 200 grams each is just 40 kg to be compared to the weight of a truck of several tonnes.

9. Using spherical symmetry and the divergence theorem we can conclude that the gravitational field inside a spherical shell is zero.

symmetricsaurus··on Declassified photos from Tinian Island as the B-29 “Enola Gay” was being loaded
Really intereresting photos.

It is a bit unfortunate that many of the captions and the sequence of photos are inaccurate. There are many misses regarding which bomb was which and on which plane it was loaded and on which city it was felled.

So, look at the pictures and ignore the captions and then read up on Wikipedia to understand the bigger picture.

symmetricsaurus··on Can we trust floating-point numbers? (2006) [pdf]
Is there any separate write-up of this? Trying to read the slides to a presentation is just frustrating.

(And if you can actually read the slides by themselves the presentation is probably not very good).

symmetricsaurus··on Show HN: Colors – Experimenting with Construct 2
The resulting balls always travel at a 45 degree angle from the direction of the shot. So shooting diagonally should keep all resulting balls travelling up-down or left-right. This would keep all balls in a rough cross shape on the playing field.

Stay out of this area and you will be able to live forever and easily beat the game.

In practice this is really hard to achieve since only a small deviation will cause some of the ever increasing number of balls to hit you anyways.
