sxcurry··on NSF faces shake-up as officials abolish its 37 divisions
All of this makes more sense when you realize that it has nothing to do with saving money or reducing the deficit. It's all about causing fear and uncertainty, and reducing structural defenses against the grifting and looting connected to TFG's friends.
sxcurry··on Evidence of controversial Planet 9 uncovered in sky surveys taken 23 years apart
I think he’s referring to Mike Brown’s book “How I Killed Pluto and Why It Had It Coming”. It’s a great read.
sxcurry··on US bill proposes jail time for people who download DeepSeek
That would be "Running Man" Hawley who was recorded scurrying like a rat through the House while his buddies were trying to overturn the election.
sxcurry··on Salmon return to lay eggs in historic habitat after Klamath River dam removal
This is completely incorrect.
sxcurry··on How to (seriously) read a scientific paper (2016)
Well, I don’t agree with your opinion of Science News, but that’s OK. What I was pointing out is that she was indeed referring to Science News (and also Science Perspectives) as sources for her reading and understanding of a paper.
sxcurry··on How to (seriously) read a scientific paper (2016)
I guess you didn’t read the article very closely. The Science editor was talking about Science News (note the capitalization) which is a well respected information resource.

My 24 year old truck can do things an iPhone still can't do
sxcurry··on Apple Introduces M2 Ultra
What’s the Apple hardware tax? I’ve never seen it applied, but maybe that’s because I live in Oregon, no sales tax.
sxcurry··on Wind and solar are now beating coal in the US
Could you show some facts please? Everything I’ve seen shows the cost of solar especially to be much lower than carbon based generation.
sxcurry··on The APL Source Code (2012)
My very first programming experience was with APL\360, using a time share IBM terminal with the APL type ball. We wrote code in a Geodetic Sciences class to compute Least Squares solutions to survey networks. I really liked APL...
sxcurry··on UTC vs. UT1 time and other nuances (2020)
Rather than geodesic I think you meant geoid.
sxcurry··on Two weeks in, the Webb Space Telescope is reshaping astronomy
"(Only as those stars exploded did they forge heavier elements such as oxygen and spew them into the cosmos.)" I don't think this is correct - can't elements up to Iron be created through fusion in the stellar core?
sxcurry··on Boötes Void: What is this patch of space with few stars?
It’s Declination not “decline”. This article makes very little sense - computer generated?
sxcurry··on Boötes Void: What is this patch of space with few stars?
Also the article is garbled and gibberish.
sxcurry··on Auto manufacturer family tree: Who owns what?
Also, to be more precise than the original article, Volkswagen AG is the parent company, which owns a number of brands, including Volkswagen and Audi.
sxcurry··on The Darker Side of Aaron Swartz (2013)
The article might have been organized by Carmen Ortiz at the time - she was planning to run for Governor on the back of this case.
sxcurry··on FDA Approves First Covid-19 Vaccine
Because they're fouling up everything for everybody else. Where I live (Oregon) if I were to get hit by a car and need an ICU bed, odds are I'd be put on a stretcher in a hall somewhere. All the ICU beds are filled with unvaccinated people denying that they have Covid.
sxcurry··on CDC panel recommends resuming use of Johnson and Johnson vaccine
Just a reminder that AstraZeneca has not applied yet to the FDA for emergency use authorization.
sxcurry··on United B772 at Denver on Feb 20th 2021, engine inlet separates from engine
Years ago I was on a 747 from SFO to LHR that landed in Iceland - oil pressure problem in an engine. A guy drove out with a pickup truck, climbed into the engine using a ladder in the back of the truck, and started hammering away. After a few hours in the terminal we got back on the plane and flew the rest of the way to LHR. I kept wondering just how qualified he was...
sxcurry··on Can Our Ballots Be Both Secret and Secure?
That doesn't happen. There are a number of security measures including signature verification. There is little to no ballot fraud in Oregon.
sxcurry··on Boom supersonic jet readies for rollout
But it doesn't - isn't this a prototype? The article talks about 2027 for the actual aircraft.
sxcurry··on Joseph Von Fraunhofer – The Glassmaker Who Sparked Astrophysics (2014)
Interesting article. I just started doing some amateur spectroscopy with an ALPY spectroscope. Seeing the absorption and emission lines of distant stars is fascinating.
sxcurry··on Looking Back at Postgres
One of the first C programs I wrote pulled data from an Ingres Database, all running on a PDP 11/34. I now use PostgreSQL heavily on AWS. Thanks Michael Stonebraker!
sxcurry··on Build yourself a weather station
Agreed - WU has really gone downhill. I pulled my station (KORTALEN1) off WU and moved it to PWS- pwsweather.com
sxcurry··on Lawmakers begin bipartisan push to cut off police access to military-style gear
Some thoughts: 1) Fire all current police officers 2) Hire back maybe 25% in numbers, but different profile people 3) Stop enforcing drug laws 4) Convert all property crime handling to online recording 5) Take away police guns, tear gas, etc, except in very rare circumstances 6) Have police focus on the very few dangerous situations where they are actually needed.
sxcurry··on Zerodium expects iOS exploit prices to drop as it announces surplus
How do you do sudo ls on iOS?
sxcurry··on SUVs parked on cargo ships reveal scope of U.S. auto market glut
We said we wouldn't pay it, and negotiated a price nicely below MSRP. They caved very quickly - not sure why they even bothered trying.
sxcurry··on SUVs parked on cargo ships reveal scope of U.S. auto market glut
My wife and I just bought a new car, and the Sales Manager had the gall to tell us that there was a $4,000 Surcharge because "the factory is closed and there is a shortage of new cars". This while standing in a sea of new cars and no shoppers.

We did not pay the surcharge.

sxcurry··on How Apple Is Working From Home
"leaving them to rely on grainy photographs to make hardware decisions" - why would the photos be grainy? I would think that the Chinese hardware folks would have decent cameras?
sxcurry··on One corner of U.S. oil market has already seen negative prices
Careful now, calling it "tar sands" instead of "oil sands" is a big no-no in Canada. They don't want the world to know just how dirty it really is.
