Before you go looking for "character" in David Brooks' book, remember that he was an enthusiastic backer of the Iraq War, and belittled and sneered at those protesting the war.
His comments after the House voted to restrict NSA phone data collection: "I'd say it's a moral victory for the wingnuts. And, you know, you look at the moment. What are we faced with? We're faced with a rising libertarianism, both on the left and the right."
I don't think that Apple makes a lot of money from repairs, as claimed by this (rather silly) article. It's more a case that iPhones, MacBooks, etc are designed and manufactured for thinness, irregular battery shapes, etc, so that they don't lend themselves well to end user repair. There are many other device options out there for people who don't like this approach.
Now I feel really badly about buying the local organic produce at one of the many farmers markets near me. Even though the produce is fresh, delicious, and my $$$ stay in my local community, I now realize that I should have been paying for the tomato transported 1000 miles with a smart chip in the carton. Thanks for the wake up call!
Except that where I live (rural Southern Oregon) there is some of the highest rates of welfare and foodstamp dependence in the West. Sort of tears apart the premise of this story. Note that the author is with the Hoover Institute.
Thanks - I had less than a vague idea. Note to developers - there's so much going on and so little time to keep abreast of everything, please consider adding just a few words about what your product/framework does.
What about audio books? I've read more in the last few years than the decade before, since I switched almost entirely to audio books. In many cases they are much better than the printed version. Case in point, Ulysses by James Joyce. The audible.com spoken version is a masterpiece, and this is definitely a book that's meant to be listened to.
I believe that USGS maps published after 2009 use NAD83, which for practical purposes is identical to WGS84 used by GPS. Also, beginning in 1984, older maps have both NAD83 and NAD27 tick marks. If in doubt, check the datum designation at the bottom of the map.
Wow, the most amazing space venture in a very long time, over 9 years in waiting, and you complain about JavaScript? I'm sorry, but I just don't understand. I wouldn't care if the images were delivered to my house as a deck of punched cards!
I live near a town (Ashland OR) full of wingnuts who are worried about EMF, chem trails, and vaccinations. My question: with so many real things to worry about, why focus on false ones?
Just FYI, from the Washington Post article on the estate tax, "The nonpartisan Tax Policy Center estimates that only 120 farms and small business, where at least half the assets are in farm or business assets, had to pay the estate tax in 2013."
But climate change has nothing to do with Al Gore, and how he might behave or misbehave. It's simple physics, and politics doesn't come into it. I agree that politics does come into any future response to climate change, but it doesn't affect the physics.
Isn't this known as a "death spiral". Try to cut expenses faster than revenue is dropping, until there's nothing left. I don't see any good news here, and don't imagine that BB will exist as an independent company by next year. They do have some good technology and I'm sure it won't be hard to sell the assets.
Agreed - I am using Virtual Box right now on my MB Air to run some specialized astronomy software. I always tell people that Macs make the best Windows machines. I'd really miss this capability.
Interesting that this article discusses the Big Bang as happening after Inflation. I always assumed Inflation was the initial stage of the Big Bang. Is that just assumed in casual descriptions, but technically not true?
My Father-in-Law lived in Ventura and we used to get a box of avocados a few times a year from his backyard tree. The house he owned had been built in an old avocado orchard and a few trees remained. Fond memories...
