sxates··on Can I run AI locally?
Cool thing!

A couple suggestions:

1. I have an M3 Ultra with 256GB of memory, but the options list only goes up to 192GB. The M3 Ultra supports up to 512GB. 2. It'd be great if I could flip this around and choose a model, and then see the performance for all the different processors. Would help making buying decisions!

A real question - who or what are we building software for? If we're using AI to build apps that are just used by other AIs, then yes, why does anything need a UI?

But while AIs are doing all the creating and all the consuming, what exactly are us humans doing all day? Do we really think software for humans will shrink to just an Agent interface?

sxates··on Texas is suing all of the big TV makers for spying on what you watch
That exists, it's called a pi-hole, and it's very popular. It will block the 'tv spy' apps.
sxates··on Oakland's new school buses reduce pollution and double as giant batteries
You're right - turns out as someone who's lived in Oakland for more than a decade I didn't know what it was like. Sometimes you need an outside perspective. Thanks.

Me and a lot of other families. You are clearly unfamiliar with the city if you think it's just constant shootings.

sxates··on Google Drive misplaces months' worth of customer data
For Google Drive files, you don't need a special account or service to back up to Synology and B2, which I also do. I use the Synology Cloud Sync service to automatically sync all Google Drive files to the synology, then another Cloud Sync task to backup the Synology to B2. Works great.

sxates··on Most cars still cost more to charge than to fill up with gas
A rebuttal: https://cleantechnica.com/2021/10/26/about-that-scary-evs-co...

tldr: lots of shady figures went into this to make EVs look as expensive as possible and ICE vehicles look as cheap as possible. Garbage "study".

sxates··on Real-time monitoring of aerosols generated from toilet flushing
Do we have any data about people actually becoming sick because of toilet flushing aerosols? Everyone enters bathrooms and flushes multiple times per day, but is not constantly sick. So is this actually a problem or just "gross if you think about it"?
sxates··on Tesla Vision Update: Replacing Ultrasonic Sensors with Tesla Vision
Cars delivered today without USS will not have: "Park Assist: alerts you of surrounding objects when the vehicle is traveling <5 mph." (among other features like Summon)

This is the most basic feature that almost every car has had for years - but not your $60k Model Y. Why can't they wait to remove sensors until they've achieved feature parity with the vision only system? This seems crazy.

I don't really understand the push to do everything through the cameras. This has caused other problems too - like their decision to control automatic wipers with just the camera. Which meant in my Model 3, the automatic wipers were erratic and ineffective while in every other car with a normal $5 rain sensor the feature worked great.

sxates··on Despite faster broadband every year, web pages don't load any faster
To be clear, I wasn't complaining about the speed. 1/2 a second is pretty quick when the average is 6 seconds.

Ironically this page loaded for me in about 500ms on my 1GB fiber connection.

sxates··on DOE announces breakthrough in residential cold climate heat pump technology
Do you mean 15kw? 1.5 is only like 4 panels, it wouldn’t make $400 per month and wouldn’t cost anywhere near $25k.

sxates··on Why is California wasting millions on hydrogen fuel pumps?
The number one selling EV make (in the US) sells every car they can build (hundreds of thousands) with no incentives.
sxates··on Why is California wasting millions on hydrogen fuel pumps?
The only benefit Hydrogen had over BEV was refueling time. I think what we've learned in the last few years is that charging at home overnight makes up for the perceived disadvantage BEVs have, and we're seeing rapid improvement in DC fast charging times (18 minutes for the 800v Hyundai Ioniq5 and it's platform cousins, for example) for longer road trips. In fact I just drove 450 miles across california in an EV and the car was always done charging before I could get my kid out of the car for a bathroom break and a quick snack and then back in the car.

So if refueling time isn't as big a deal as it was 5-10 years ago, and will be even less of an issue in another 5-10, Hydrogen starts to look pretty lousy actually. For those who own BEV's, having to stop at some point in your day to go to a fuel station feels archaic. Home charging is a game changer.

sxates··on Why is California wasting millions on hydrogen fuel pumps?
It's not free, it was just paid for by other people. If it has to be nearly free for someone to take it, not sure that really supports these being commercially viable.

sxates··on Building a modern home in the woods
I had 400A installed at my house (all electric, solar, batteries, the works). It's still overkill. What's shocking to me isn't that they went with a 400a panel, that I can (and obviously did) justify. It's that it WASN'T ENOUGH and they had to add propane as well. I can't imagine what kind of pool heater they have that needs more than that.

Cool house though.

It’s a Rheem ‘hybrid’ heat pump water heater (80gal). You can get them at Home Depot.
sxates··on New York City bans natural gas in new buildings
Hope that we don’t have one in the middle of winter. Most times of the year the solar + batteries should be able to keep the lights on and at least minimum heat. Any half the year we could comfortably run off grid for long stretches.
sxates··on New York City bans natural gas in new buildings
I've run into this guys videos before, and I find them a bit conspiratorial, and certainly not academically honest. What you describe is not my experience with heat pumps at all. Sibling comment says it best.
sxates··on New York City bans natural gas in new buildings
Tesla's guidance for dealing with battery fires in their cars is to basically flood them. I think the idea is to keep the temperature down. The water won't extinguish it because it's a chemical fire, but you can use water to keep it from spiraling out of control.
sxates··on New York City bans natural gas in new buildings
In our house we have central heat which requires a fan to blow the warm air to all the vents. No power = no heat, regardless of the fuel source.

We also don't have prolonged winter outages here since there's no snow (coastal california). If that was a common problem I might strategize a little differently or have gas as an emergency backup.

Just got my (mostly) December utility bill: $350 for 1971kwh. That will probably be the biggest bill of the year, it's been a very cold December. We're on a 'net metering' plan though, so our electricity is only billed annually - prior to that it's just costs and credits. Our bill in July was -$400, so the summer credits balance out the winter costs. I don't expect we'll owe anything at true-up time.

I should also mention that we have a 1BR apartment downstairs that we rent out, so this is usage for 2 households, each with electric kitchens, heat pumps, laundry, etc. Our usage would be lower without a tenant downstairs.

As for total costs, it's hard to say because so much of it was part of other major renovations to the house. We redid all the electrical in the house as part of that, which would normally not be necessary just to upgrade a couple of appliances. Things that might be necessary is upgrading your main electric panel to a higher capacity (going from 100a to 200a for example, which would cost around $8-10k). Cost of the appliances themselves are a big variable. Our main heat pump was $15k, but a lower model would have been more like $10k. The water heater was $2k (again, you could get a cheaper one).

Solar panels were installed in two systems a few years apart.

In 2017 my 6kw system cost $24,000 before any incentives (by SolarCity).

In 2020 my 7.8kw system cost $15,000 before any incentives (by Tesla).

After tax credits those two probably cost net <$30k.

The Tesla Powerwalls are being paid for entirely by the state of California SGIP program (which depending on your situation will cover about 30% or the full cost). Without that program they would have been in the $20k range.

Who knows what things will look like in 15 years. 15 years prior to now such a thing was not feasible, or would have cost 10x as much. I expect in 15 years the cost of home batteries will be much much lower, and replacement costs will be affordable. We're still in the very early stages of these products development and scale.
