swrobel··on Ray Ozzie on Lotus Notes and Slow Hunch Innovation (2011)
I know Notes is considered great software, and Ozzie is given a lot of credit as a result, but I’ll never understand. I had the displeasure of working for a bank back in 2007 (that deservedly ceased to exist after the financial crisis), and we used Notes, which sticks in my craw to this day as some of the worst software that I’ve ever used (and I regularly had to use Crystal Reports at this job).

Search was so bad that meetings with my manager frequently started with him turning his monitor so we could both see it, sorting his sent mail by recipient, and saying “now what day do you think I sent you that email” after which I would watch him scroll endlessly thinking “I’ll never get this part of my life back.”

swrobel··on JetBlue Founder’s New Airline Won’t Have Customer Service Phones
As the guy who uses live chat first and foremost everywhere it’s available, I’m well aware that I’m getting a much lower level of service than I would on the phone just to avoid being on the phone with someone. The simple fact is that a person can only be on the phone with one other person at a time, but live chat reps can (and do) service many customers at the same time. Don’t kid yourself about his motivations for eliminating phone support.

I still don't know what Turkish Delight even is after reading

swrobel··on How We Found New Patterns in LA’s Homeless Arrest Data
Good for you, but I'm not sure what this has to do with the homeless issue. Your comment seemed to insinuate that you left because of it.
swrobel··on How We Found New Patterns in LA’s Homeless Arrest Data
Why exactly did you move? I live in Venice and while I won't dispute that homelessness is our #1 problem, I'd say it comes with the territory and it certainly isn't enough to make me consider leaving this amazing place.
swrobel··on Kazakhstan is changing its alphabet from Cyrillic to Latin-based
I'm really curious about how this will be implemented from a software standpoint. Will the language use the same ISO (or whatever body determines them) browser language code like en-US or will there need to be two separate codes that exist in parallel, one for the old cyrillic version, and one for the new latin one.

Are there any modern examples of this sort of transition having to be implemented? I think we all think of the set of possible language codes as something that has been static for a long time, but this shows that it can be rather fluid.

swrobel··on VS Code can do that?
Can't Atom do all of this as well?
swrobel··on Why I'm declining funding from Ruby Together
Again, what part of the CoC did I violate?

Also, I think it's both possible to apologize for my rant and point out that his CoC-waving was absurd.

swrobel··on Why I'm declining funding from Ruby Together
thank you for stating this far more eloquently than I was able to
swrobel··on Why I'm declining funding from Ruby Together
I would've disagreed with you a few months back, but now seeing how a CoC can be pulled out as a catch-all to silence anyone who disagrees with you, I'm firmly in your camp.
swrobel··on Why I'm declining funding from Ruby Together
not losing any sleep about it, although I really can't comprehend why, as an OSS maintainer, you want to reduce your pool of contributors over something so petty.

Oh, also, if it did, that's pretty bad because he banned me for pulling funding...?

swrobel··on Why I'm declining funding from Ruby Together
agreed, it's the ban I take issue with. felt pretty power-trippy to me.
swrobel··on What Dockless Bikes and Scooters Are Exposing
"most people." lol.
swrobel··on Why I'm declining funding from Ruby Together
Yeah, sorry, I will try to make a long story short.

For years I've had Bundler set to just run jobs equal to the number of cores on my system. However, I noticed it was running one less so I assumed I was doing something wrong. After hours of banging my head against the wall, I finally found that it Bundler subtracts 1 from the number of jobs you pass to it, but this behavior has been removed from master (for eventual 2.x branch). A bit irate, I engaged in the following exchange w/ Andre, in which he accused me of violating their CoC for posting a bit of a kneejerk comment, which I apologized for, but questioned what I possibly could've violated in the CoC, in the process making a wisecrack about the ridiculous term in it about "making casual references to slavery or indentured servitude." Anyway, if you really want to dig in, here's the github thread:

https://github.com/bundler/bundler/pull/5808#issuecomment-38...

In the end, he banned me (it says 24 hrs in his comment, but it seems permanent) which has now prevented me from submitting a PR to document the very "feature" that threw me into this rage to begin with. Way to run an OSS project!

swrobel··on Why I'm declining funding from Ruby Together
I apparently violated the Bundler CoC by disagreeing with their implementation of --jobs <n> that actually runs n - 1 jobs. When I questioned what I had actually violated, he accused me of making a joke about racism and blocked me. https://twitter.com/swrobel/status/984894874330656768

As a recent victim of André's petty wrath, I completely agree with the sentiment
swrobel··on What Dockless Bikes and Scooters Are Exposing
Really you just leave yours anywhere even though you own it?
swrobel··on What Dockless Bikes and Scooters Are Exposing
"We don’t ask GM, Ford, or Toyota to solve car parking"

A more apt comparison would be Avis, Hertz, etc but I think that would still be disingenuous. Car rental companies certainly penalize you for abandoning a rental car whereas these scooter/bike rental companies just let you dump them wherever.
