swixmix··on A tiny radioactive battery could keep your future phone running for 50 years
For extra clarity:

> Nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers are powered by onboard nuclear reactors. Atoms in the nuclear reactor split, which releases energy as heat. This heat is used to create high-pressured steam. The steam turns propulsion turbines that provide the power to turn the propeller. Additional turbines also make electricity for the ship. As the steam cools and condenses back into water, the water is directed back through the system, and the process starts again.

swixmix··on Unpacking Elixir: Real-Time and Latency
"Elixir compiles into BEAM byte code (via Erlang Abstract Format). This means that Elixir code can be called from Erlang and vice versa, without the need to write any bindings. All Elixir modules start with the Elixir. prefix followed by the regular Elixir name."

swixmix··on Thousands of early-career NIH researchers forming union for first time
> Ultimately, unions' power comes from the threat of striking.

The power comes from the NLRA, a federal law, which is enforced by the NLRB, a federal agency. It’s about agreeing to and enforcing a contract between the workers and the employer.

Whether or not to strike then becomes a part of contract negotiation.

Polio was absolutely terrible for those who had it. I wouldn’t blame him for having it. Or for ending it. However, for other reasons, I agree with you.

swixmix··on Oxygen Candles: Providing Emergency Air
Oxygen candles smell bad. I would never want to use one except in an emergency situation. No scrubber necessary if I’m just evacuation.
swixmix··on Ask HN: Why can't I host my own email?
I also self host but on a VPS. Incoming mail works great. Outgoing mail not so much unless I send it to a trusted third party SMTP server. No outgoing mail fees if low traffic. Might be an option to consider while building up reputation?
swixmix··on The economics of pumpkin patches
A pumpkin size detector is also known as an eyeball.
swixmix··on The economics of pumpkin patches
I’ve sold pumpkins on a farm before. It’s a social experience where you pay for the pumpkin “ticket” at the end.

Whole families dress up for the experience. People love being in a pumpkin patch and searching for their favorite pumpkin. They love doing it with their family. They enjoy the risk of wheeling them and guessing how much they weigh.

And the farm makes more money when they grow heavier pumpkins.

This isn’t an activity to be taken so seriously.

Scales and measurement aren’t really necessary. I could eyeball and wobble a pumpkin very quickly and give a fair price. But then I am having all the fun, not the customer.

Put the tech into making it a better experience!

Oh is that tractor pulling a wagon? Got to go!

How do we know what the environment wants? When we are saving it, it’s from our perspective. We are saving our environment. There are plenty of pests that don’t like what we’re up to.

We are important. :)

swixmix··on DNS alias mode (2020)
You can also play with DNS by registering a domain name and running two VPSs as nameservers. I also run my own mail server and find this setup amazingly convenient.
swixmix··on Ask HN: How to get started with CB radio?
This brings up a good point. Be prepared for a situation like this. Even if your radio set up is correct, your neighbors might not know where to get help to solve interference problems.

swixmix··on Nuclear technology’s role in the world’s energy supply is shrinking
Nuclear power is only as safe as the people who are involved in it. In this case, the Fukushima power plant wasn't funded like it should have been because people weren't interested in nuclear power. Turns out that's both extremely dangerous and hard to control.

Also, what do you mean by paranoia and unnecessary evacuations? Nobody could even guess what was going to happen. When will explosions happen? How many? What direction will the wind blow? The power plant was out of control. The US government didn't assist with evacuations until AFTER the first release which spread contamination south hitting Tokyo, and east hitting their own USS Ronald Reagan.

Paranoid? Unnecessary? Sorry, that's a cruel thing to say to those who were contaminated.

"That's how safe nuclear is."

swixmix··on Understanding Certificate Pinning
OpenBSD does something like this. In the current release, they provide the public keys for the next release. After trust-on-first-use it's a never-ending cycle.

I call it trust-on-first-use because I didn't verify the initial signatures. Hmmm..

swixmix··on Ask HN: A way to adblock “we're using cookies” popups?
I use vimium[1] to close most pop-ups by typing "f" and then hitting the letter that pops up next to the close button.

If that doesn't work, I use a bookmarklet called "Remove Sticky"[2]. I type "bre" and hit enter when sticky things pop up to get them gone.
