swilliamsio··on Show HN: My wife is pregnant; naturally I made a baby-name app to prepare
As someone with a middle name, it has never caused me any problem when filling out forms and the like.
swilliamsio··on Should a dog's sniff be enough to convict a person for murder?
That similar question and this entire thread reminds me of xkcd 2173. [0] We obviously already let neural networks detect drugs and drive cars, though the former gets to wear a nice fluffy fur coat.

swilliamsio··on Netflix will start publishing video games, has hired former EA exec
Fantastic film. Well worth a watch.
swilliamsio··on Show HN: Obsidian for Mobile – Plain-text knowledge base on the go
I tried out Obsidian but its really not for me. The divide between edit mode and view mode is annoying and I don't really see the appeal of the focus on the graph and links - I'd prefer if my notes were kept organised and logical through a system I develop as opposed to the random(?) linking of keywords.

I use Notion right now for my notes which I like, except from the always online requirement. I'm currently waiting for AnyType to be released which will hopefully save me from that and be my forever knowledgebase.

swilliamsio··on The 'Fuck You' Pattern
I use Baconreader on Android and its great. I've heard loads of great things about unofficial reddit apps and nothing good about the official app.
swilliamsio··on Is Sony's 140MB MiniDisc Drive the Next Betamax? (1996)
> Apple wound up completely monopolizing music sales for a decade

iTunes was never big enough to count as a monopoly on music sales, not even close.

swilliamsio··on Real-world CSS vs. CSS-in-JS performance comparison
Haven't heard of this until now. Looks like a cleaner version of Bootstrap?
swilliamsio··on No evidence UFOs are alien craft, unclassified US intelligence report to reveal
Can't imagine those water aliens would be too pleased with all the plastic we've been dumping down there.
swilliamsio··on Ask HN: Favorite Blogs by Individuals?
Have you thought of getting a RSS feed reader so you don't have to check? I use Feedbro which is also a browser extension so its very easy to see when theres a new post.
swilliamsio··on Will Linux phones stay around this time?
How are you finding app availability and system stability?

About four or five years ago, I had a BQ Aquaris E4.5 which ran Ubuntu Touch and used it as my daily driver. I really struggled with the lack of app support - no Messenger, no Snapchat, no Instagram, no WhatsApp. There were also lots of little bugs that really showed the operating system hadn't had the massive amount of testing a mainstream OS would get. So I dumped it and got another Android.

swilliamsio··on New evidence that British workplaces are losing viewpoint diversity
The commmon joke goes something like this. Video gamers think there are only:

* Two races: white and ""political""

* Two genders: male and ""political""

* Two sexualities: straight and ""political""

* Two body types: normative and ""political""

swilliamsio··on Sid Meier: More Than Just Civilization
A game of study for comparison might be Victoria 2. It's a grand strategy set in the Victorian period and has a decent economic simulator that the player can influence in a fair few different ways.

A few different ways a player can effect their nation's economy include: unlocking technologies, conquering territory for resources, expanding a nations sphere of influence for resources and markets, electing parties with different economic policies (planned economy vs laissez faire), playing with taxes/tariffs, encouraging certain industries, etc. The economic simulation isn't super deep, but it is deep enough to be engaging and fulfilling to a player who likes these sorts of spreadsheet simulator games.

swilliamsio··on Prince Philip has died
Though not everything on HN is tech related, you could argue Prince Philip was a bit of a tech icon as this article did: "Prince Philip, inadvertent father of the Computer Misuse Act, dies aged 99" https://www.theregister.com/2021/04/09/prince_philip_obituar...
swilliamsio··on Ask HN: What novel tools are you using to write web sites/apps?
For my personal website/blog, I use the beautifully simple static site generator makesite.py.[1] For the other sites I've made, I've used WordPress or plain old no fuss static html/js/css.

swilliamsio··on Testing a few new designs that don't show the public dislike count
I thought this was an April Fools joke at first.
swilliamsio··on Multiple US Navy destroyers swarmed by mysterious 'drones' off California coast
Most warships carry 40mm or 20mm minigun-like weapons which seem far more well-suited to taking down drones.

swilliamsio··on Suez canal blocked by a massive ship
When the canals expand, the ships get bigger too.
swilliamsio··on Electric car that charges itself
Surely public transportation options are infinitely more preferable than people repeatedly renting cars?
swilliamsio··on I bought 300 emoji domain names from Kazakhstan and built an email service
Please don't tell me there exists genuine attempts to "cancel" the .io domain.
swilliamsio··on The Covid Zoom Boom Is Reshaping Sign Language
Yea, but speaking slowly and clearly is _only_ useful to anyone learning the language.

If I spoke to you in Klingon, and you don't understand Klingon. Would speaking to you in Klingon slower and louder help you? Undoubtedly, no, it would instead make me a rude person.

swilliamsio··on 1,000 True Fans (2008)
Wow. Four jokes in a row. Is this a reddit thread or a hacker news thread? I can't tell any more.
swilliamsio··on Tell HN: A case of negative SEO I caught on my service and how I dealt with it
Is this a reference to the Iliad/Aeneid/Odyssey and how humans were gamed by gods into fighting each other pointlessly for ten years? Or is there something else called Troy?
swilliamsio··on I Still Use RSS
That's awesome. How did you do that?
swilliamsio··on Spotify patent would suggest songs based on users' emotions
> I don’t need an album shuffled by default, the artist picked the track listing for a reason

I don't get you. Isn't the shuffle button on or off based on the last time you changed it? If the shuffle is on, and you play an album, then you'll play it shuffled. I'd much rather that than Spotify trying to predict whether I want to play something shuffled or not, and auto-changing the button status.

swilliamsio··on How hard should I push myself?
What one person calls obsesssion, another calls perfectionism.
swilliamsio··on Show HN: Git News – Social News website for developers and GitHub fans
It's a good start. I shall watch this space with great interest.
swilliamsio··on Tech companies are profiling us from before birth
Pretty sure changing your name is free most places in the world.
swilliamsio··on Null
Any idea why "Lightwater Country Park" is on the list?
swilliamsio··on Ask HN: When coding, how to do remember what you were doing the previous day?
Yea, this is definitely the way. Stop at a logical stopping point. Leaving at the point where a task or sub-task is completed ensures the next time you come back there's a logical next step for you to begin.
swilliamsio··on Nuclear power: Are we too anxious about the risks of radiation?
I highly doubt you are old enough that western did not always have that meaning for the majority of your life. It's a holdover from the Cold War, after all.
