swiley··on Android and iOS data collection
The only thing you really miss is right clicks. The Gnome (not phosh) keyboard supports some of that but I prefer xvkbd.
swiley··on Android and iOS data collection
I own a Pinephone. I use jmp.chat so messing around with the phone doesn't effect my ability to use the phone network. It's gotten a lot better, I would recommend running a lightweight X11 WM (I like fluxbox and fvwm) rather than a fat DE like phosh or kde.
swiley··on Hermit Programmers Are Dead
They've been saying this since the 80s. The magical world where prolog/pascal/java/NPM solves all your problems is eternally 3 years away.
swiley··on Ruby removed “Participants will be tolerant of opposing views” from its CoC
Sounds par for ruby.
swiley··on [dead]
GNU didn’t need to do this and the App Library for GNU/Linux is often more complete.
swiley··on [dead]
Do not cary smartphones.
swiley··on Google developing own CPUs for Chromebook laptops
I doubt this will be the helpful kind of diversity.
swiley··on Why Carmakers Can’t Transition to Newer Chips
I thought you would fail most driving tests doing that.
swiley··on Face detection for my leaf blower
Meh. They’re only bad in urban areas. There are plenty of other loud tools/toys people use in rural places and it doesn’t really matter because everyone is so far apart.
swiley··on YouTube is banning anti-vaccine activists and blocking all anti-vaccine content
I was quiet about it until the mandate and planning to get vaccinated once everything child out.

After that I’ll die before I get vaccinated and I’ve been posting about it under my real name which is something I almost always avoid doing with non-software politics.

swiley··on A notable JavaScript developer shamelessly copied one of my most downloaded nod
Many legal things are immoral.
swiley··on Scientists complete starch synthesis from CO2, revolutionary for agricultural
That depends on how much energy is required. It does mean that settlements in places like the Yukon and Northern Alaska are now much more interesting.
swiley··on Why Telegram had to follow Apple and Google when they suspended a voting app
There are no good smartphone messaging apps. XMPP with OMEMO is the best you can do currently.
swiley··on Do not leave XPS laptop in any sleep/hibernate/standby mode when placed in a bag
What the hell is going on with US software companies? Torching people's machines just to collect a little more data makes no sense!
swiley··on File picker meme
I’ll take good faith bugs and missing features over the pathological psycho warfare in closed software any day of the week.
swiley··on Apple's Power Move to Kneecap Facebook Advertising Is Working
Smartphone Apps are universally shit.
swiley··on Ask HN: Did You hear China is cracking down on crypto? If so how many times?
I’ve been hearing exactly this since I started messing with crypto in 2011.
swiley··on Luxury Linux Smartphones
“Linux” (as in Linux based operating systems) are attractive because they’re community maintained and you can hack around in the OS with minimal skills and no special tools or extra computers. Android is almost the polar opposite of that.
swiley··on Luxury Linux Smartphones
Those two don’t have mainline Linux, they use a custom out of tree 4.x kernel.
swiley··on Microsoft ruined passwords, now aims for a passwordless future
> Unixs and Apples have also always relied on passwords as a first authentication method.

Nowhere have I seen anyone primarily relying on passwords (unless they didn’t have a clue.) Everyone is using PKI.

swiley··on Home Price to Income Ratio
There are good reasons to be a renter, it’s hard enough getting an apartment in the time between accepting a job offer and your start date, I couldn’t imagine hunting for a house/condo in that time.
swiley··on Alexa leaks private wishlists
These companies have a history of absolutely abusing things like this. Comparing reasonable concern that’s informed by history to superstition is very upsetting to me.
swiley··on Alexa leaks private wishlists
I don’t know if you could pay me enough to have one of these in my house.
swiley··on Ask HN: Where do you see Firefox going?
Lately it’s looked like applying AI to CRT/political correctness or so.
swiley··on X Window System on a Floppy
I think software quality was actually higher then. Dealing with a new API or framework is work too, often it’s actually more work than a bespoke implementation.
swiley··on NSO Group iMessage Zero-Click Exploit Captured in the Wild
One company, which likely has a retention problem, is writing all of the code for your system and setting things up so that you can’t easily use anything else.

Do you think this is a recipe for secure computing?

swiley··on I Got a 'Mild' Breakthrough Case
>an absolute failure to understand Bayes theorem.
swiley··on Australian gov to use facial recognition and GPS tracking to enforce quarantine
It doesn’t matter why, stop rationalizing this bullshit.
swiley··on Unvaccinated are 5X more likely to catch Delta, 11X more likely to die
Provided your employer is willing to absorb the risk of a late result which is $14k.
swiley··on Facebook Censored Me For Mentioning Open-Source Social Network Mastodon
At this point anything done with covid as an excuse should be thought of as a power grab.

We have vaccines for those that want them.

We have drugs that treat it very well.

There’s no reason to censor information or shut things down over it.
