swampthinker··on The sunk cost fallacy: Devs describe how it almost destroyed them
Developers didn't insist for perfection though. One of the greatest product designers of all time did.
swampthinker··on We Might Be Eating Cactus in the Future
Sounds ripe for an MBA to take it and brand it as a hipster snack discovered from Mexico.
swampthinker··on Apology after Japanese train departs 20 seconds early
One thing I want to point out is that if I am reading the reports correctly, the JR system is actually a very profitable corporation.

What would it take to get a profitable train system in the US?

swampthinker··on Bob Lutz: Kiss the good times goodbye: The auto industry's change curve
It's not sexy talking about how we have the potential to put millions of Americans out of jobs, and would rather handwave the discussion with a "Oh they said the same thing during the industrial revolution."
swampthinker··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
Smart fridge device, tracks what's in your fridge.

Just some hardware prototypes that I'm working on, using OpenCV and TensorFlow for food recognition. The fact that Amazon doesn't have an official product purchasing API is irritating, but makes complete sense.

swampthinker··on Fun facts about Rust's growing popularity
Rustacean, that's the first time of heard of that name. Absolutely fantastic

swampthinker··on 11-year-old girl inspired by Flint water crisis creates cheap kit to test lead
I know that go.com is older than that. I'm talking about what Disney is currently using it for.
swampthinker··on 11-year-old girl inspired by Flint water crisis creates cheap kit to test lead
It's Disney. Probably their own implementation of AMP.(Separate page that loads much faster for mobile sites.

Why they implemented it this way? Beats me.

swampthinker··on Through the Looking Glass (Part 1)
That, and the fact that he wasn't meeting with the YC teams. If you're the CTO, it doesn't matter that you missed the initial meeting. The founding team should all go and meet.
swampthinker··on New Research on How Ride-Hailing Impacts Travel Behavior
"Only" 3% of the MBTA annual ridership is still 5 million + rides.
swampthinker··on A Closer Look at the $13B Premium Eyewear Market
I'm surprised Warby Parker isn't mentioned at all in this article. Isn't their whole business model built on tackling this market?
swampthinker··on Uber strips power from ousted CEO Travis Kalanick
17 person board. Are there other examples of startups that have been taken over like this with a successful outcome?
swampthinker··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2017)
Is there any opportunities for internships at SessionM?
swampthinker··on A Sunnyvale, CA home that went for nearly $800K over the asking price
Don't worry too much. The American economy generally runs on 69 month cycles (on mobile, sorry for no source). In about 6-7 years you will be able to buy a home again.
swampthinker··on Why Dropbox decided to build its own infrastructure and network
I'll be 100% honest, I didn't realize Dropbox was still on AWS. You figure at a certain scale it makes more sense to run your own solution.
swampthinker··on Eaze, cannabis delivery company, raises 27M
That delivery spike on 4/20 is amusing to see. I suspect it will become the equivalent of Christmas sales volume for Cannabis vendors.
swampthinker··on Apple Special Event
Well, guess this doesn't work on Chrome.
swampthinker··on Billionaires and big ag are joining venture investors to fund lab-grown meat
MSG's health problems are greatly over-exaggerated. Ever had Chinese food? Most asian dishes have a ton of MSG.
swampthinker··on Four-year professional visas get green light in Thailand
To most white Americans that want to work in Thailand, Hispanic people are scarier than southeast asians.
swampthinker··on SoundCloud saved by emergency funding as CEO steps aside
So SC will focus more on driving towards profitability now instead of growth. I wonder if SC will stagnate, or this cash infusion + new leadership will provide much needed stability.
swampthinker··on Benchmark Capital Sues Travis Kalanick for Fraud
I don't think AirBnB is going to die, everyone has reported them as being profitable for nearly 2 years now. Agreed with the rest though.

I think AirBnb and Redfin are the big bets that have worked well so far.

swampthinker··on In a Robot Economy, All Humans Will Be Marketers
Re: The ATM point. The evidence they cite is this graph [1]. I'm not sure that this is a compelling graph. Sure the number of tellers has been growing, but it's been very slow growth. Meanwhile, ATM's have been skyrocketing in popularity. One could easily argue that teller job creation was heavily impacted by ATM's, but offset by overall population growth.

swampthinker··on Higher-paid, faster-growing tech jobs are concentrating in 8 US hubs
Without looking, I'm going to guess (in no particular order):

- Cambridge/Boston

- DC metro area

- Austin

- Bay area

- Seattle

- NYC

- Philadelphia

- LA or San Diego

EDIT:

Hm, got most right. I forgot about the Triangle entirely, but I'm surprised Baltimore outpaced Philly.

swampthinker··on Google Has Dropped Google Instant Search
Why don't you like it?
swampthinker··on Google Has Dropped Google Instant Search
Yeah, I usually will start my Google searches in the Omnibox, then use the search bar on the page when I needed to find something new. In those use cases, instant is incredibly useful.
swampthinker··on The Company Behind Many Surprise Emergency Room Bills
HON stock did just hit an all time high.
swampthinker··on Invisible unicorns: Big companies that started with little or no money
I mean, you can give me the condescending response, or you could answer the question and tell me what I'm missing.
swampthinker··on Invisible unicorns: Big companies that started with little or no money
While I definitely have my issues with David Rose, I am floored that you think this business had a "clear path" to a large business.

They are essentially trying to become a web portal for every service imaginable, but need $2M to build a website to do this? There are just too many red flags. I don't understand what you see here.
