swampthinker··on Snowshoe hares found to routinely feast on their own dead
Only the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch can stop them!
swampthinker··on Millions of College Students Are Going Hungry
US college students are young adults, 4 months removed from Highschool in most cases. They're also for the most part unsupervised in their dorms. I can recount countless cooking horror stories of dormmates that nearly burned the kitchen down. My personal favorite was cooking dry pasta without water.

Re: bad actors, it isn't just destructive tendencies. It's mostly just being a mess and not doing dishes/ not cleaning up after you're done.

swampthinker··on Millions of College Students Are Going Hungry
Fire hazards + only takes a few bad actors to ruin a kitchen. There also is there as much of a cooking culture in the US

It's really sad how toxic Reddit brigading is
swampthinker··on SpaceX to lay off 10% of Workforce
This isn't the first time SpaceX has done a 10% layoff round [1]. It seems like they do this at key inflection points where they're relatively sure they can make the next tech leap, and need to retool their workforce.

Do you guys have any plans for magnetic closure boxes by chance?
swampthinker··on Steve Jobs on why Xerox failed
That's exactly right. It's normally a purchased through a carrier's 2 year upgrade plan, and the expectation has been simplicity.

Why are we suddenly expected to do more research on various models when part of the reason why the iPhone was successful was due to it's simplicity?

swampthinker··on Steve Jobs on why Xerox failed
There are now 4 phones consumers are supposed to be aware of. On top of the naming scheme being confusing, most people who asked me during the holidays think Xs is just a smaller version of the X.

Frankly X was just a dumb name.

swampthinker··on Steve Jobs on why Xerox failed
So whats the difference between the XR, XS, X max (is that a thing? Feel like I've heard that). Which iPhone has a notch? Which one has a home button still?

These are questions I've heard over the holidays from friends and family, questions that were unthinkable when Jobs ran Apple.

swampthinker··on It will become easier to buy a house
Should be noted that this is about UK housing, but I assume the US is similar.

$460M valuation and taking on money from a family office. Not too shabby. I still think CIG bit off far more than they could chew, and comprised the final product as a result. But I do hope they succeed.
swampthinker··on Great Pacific garbage patch cleanup fails to collect plastic
Wouldn't it be very effective to deploy this technology around the major plastic pollution sources instead?
swampthinker··on Empirical Evidence on Impact of CA SB826: Gender Quotas for Boards of Directors
Because they have been systematically discriminated against at every stage, most female executives are less capable. They haven't been given the same opportunities and experience that their male counterparts have.
swampthinker··on Niantic, Maker of Hit ‘Pokémon Go’ App, Refuels with $3.9B Valuation
I firmly believe that had Niantic been allowed to mimic the traditional Pokemon PvP, it would have been an even greater success.

The core gameplay of the Nintendo games wasn't terribly complex, but had tons of replayability.

Hey Walter, did Sid Meier ever consult you while developing the Civilization series? I recognized a lot of similarities between Civ and Classic Empire when I went back and played the older games in the series.

Max Howell's story really surprises me. You would figure that someone would've internally fast tracked a developer like him.

Facebook is turning an awful lot of Democrats into enemies. Very curious to see how Zuckerberg tries to maneuver Facebook through wartime. [1]

That heat map of Boston is amusing to look at. All of Brookline and the single family homes of West Cambridge are bright red.
swampthinker··on If you want to understand Silicon Valley, watch Silicon Valley
My favorite Silicon Valley anecdote:

"During the review process once the footage [of Techcrunch Disrupt] was woven in, another editor criticized the crowd shots for not featuring any women and blamed Berg for the oversight.

'...Those were real shots of the real place, and we didn't frame women out.The world we're depicting is f---ed up.' said Berg"

Sorry for the amp link, the main page was broken.

swampthinker··on If you want to understand Silicon Valley, watch Silicon Valley
Wired has a fun series where a professional watches scenes from a genre about their industry, then reviews their accuracy.

In retrospect, the N900 was such a visionary product. Maybe not as much as the Palm Pre, but close to it IMO.
swampthinker··on Oil Demand for Cars Is Already Falling
2 points there:

- Almost all manufacturers have admitted to BSing the MPG tests, so the gains in practice probably aren't as good as we think.

- Ideally, that ratio will shift over time to be more on EV and efficiency gains.

Am I missing something? Does this mean $100M in donations since the beginning of Smile? That sounds astronomically low.
swampthinker··on The frustration and quasi freedom of being an Uber driver
The VC money that flowed into these drivers has essentially dried up as gig-economy startups push towards sustainability / profitability. As was predicted.
swampthinker··on The Growth of Reddit
Very interesting to watch the sports subreddits fluctuate in size as their respective leagues come in and out of season.
