swampthing··on Postal Service loses $2.2B in 3 months as virus woes persist
They’d probably be better off just charging people for the ability to opt out of junk mail.
swampthing··on US unprepared for an electrical grid collapse, but it costs only $300M
In what way does China have the U.S. beat from a military standpoint? I am no expert, but as far as I know, the U.S. military is still far stronger.
swampthing··on Is the world's best butter worth 50 dollars a pound? (2017)
Interesting, I felt Échiré was more or less indistinguishable from Isigny Sainte-Mère, but that Rodolphe Le Meunier was in a league of its own.
swampthing··on US Betrays Healthcare Workers in Coronavirus Disaster
Which is why I said “normal times”.
swampthing··on US Betrays Healthcare Workers in Coronavirus Disaster
You can imagine a doctor or nurse bringing in sub-standard equipment that then causes an issue for a patient.
swampthing··on US Betrays Healthcare Workers in Coronavirus Disaster
It's mentioned in the article:

> On a widespread basis, doctors and nurses are being gagged and muzzled by administrators for expressing their concerns, and penalized or even fired when they do speak out.

swampthing··on US Betrays Healthcare Workers in Coronavirus Disaster
Not only are doctors and nurses getting muzzled and fired for commenting on inadequate supplies, but many hospitals and clinics are refusing to allow their doctors and nurses to bring their own masks. Doctors and nurses are fighting hospital administration on this.

I understand why you wouldn’t want that happening in normal times, but to hold firm on that policy now seems like utter madness.

swampthing··on Show HN: Introvert – Generative artwork to keep you off your phone
Just curious, why is this named “Introvert”? Is it that this app is thought to be more appealing to introverts?
swampthing··on Jianruiying, the Special Forces of the Qing Dynasty
Japan versus China? Do people really consider China to have won that one? I always thought they mostly made it out due to the US defeating Japan.
swampthing··on Lasts Longer (2.0)
There is a strong network effect for phones. This seems like a smart way for Apple to maintain its market positioning as a premium offering, while enabling growth of its market share amongst people who can’t afford their new phones, thus making their network more valuable.
swampthing··on California Governor calls for home isolation for seniors, bars to close, etc
I feel like I'm missing something obvious — why do we need to analyze what happens when truck drivers stop making deliveries, if no one is talking about banning those deliveries?
swampthing··on Coronavirus outbreak makes lobsters so cheap that sellers face a fatal blow
It's nonsensical to you because you're not looking at it from their perspective. The healthy 25 year olds that are holed up in their apartments value playing it safe with their health more than they value helping businesses that they don't own.
swampthing··on Hidden Champions: Successful but little-known businesses
I suppose the author wants to keep them hidden.
swampthing··on Japan has 33k businesses at least a century old
The article is about century+ old businesses in general, of which family-run ones are a subset.
swampthing··on Japan has 33k businesses at least a century old
But in the West, even if you just gave your business away to another person who continued to run it, we would still consider that the same business.
swampthing··on Using Python and Selenium for automated visual regression testing
Have you tried Percy? There certainly can be false positives at times, but you can just approve the diffs so it's not a huge pain in the end.
swampthing··on Ask HN: Incorporate with Clerky vs. Atlas vs. Gust in 2020?
Hi! I’m one of the cofounders of Clerky. I’m pretty sure we offer the most ability to customize things, if that’s what you meant in terms of flexibility. For example, you have the ability to customize the underlying form language to a large degree (though you would only want to do this with the assistance of a good startup attorney, in most cases).

If there’s a specific customization you have in mind, feel free to reach out and we’d be happy to let you know if it’s something our software would support.

swampthing··on Show HN: Mac toolbar app to show electricity cutoff schedule
Funny, I have a habit of reading HN comments before clicking on the actual link, and thought the link would be about the planned outages here in the SF bay area :)
swampthing··on Firefighting foam leaves toxic legacy in Californians’ drinking water
It's cumbersome, but I think you can use something like Steripen for that (UV).
swampthing··on Clerky vs. Stripe Atlas - Incorporation Services
Of course, feel free to reach out to support@clerky.com with any questions you have!
swampthing··on Clerky vs. Stripe Atlas - Incorporation Services
The banks are all different from each other in various ways, but to answer your question, yup Mercury provide debit cards too! Not sure about the nuances of what you're looking for in terms of transferring money, you might need to check with them on that.
swampthing··on Clerky vs. Stripe Atlas - Incorporation Services
Hey, I'm one of the founders of Clerky - we actually recently added an integration with Mercury, that allows people anywhere to open a bank account. There's more info here: https://help.clerky.com/article/2647-bank-account-integratio...
swampthing··on Launch HN: Axdraft (YC W19) - Legal documents for startups in minutes
It sounds like you might have gotten some bad advice from elsewhere – most new startups with 10 million authorized shares pay a DE franchise tax that is very close to the minimum (around $400). There are two different ways to calculate franchise tax for DE - the "authorized shares" method and the "assumed par value" method. The letter DE sends out uses the former to estimate your franchise tax, which is usually some huge amount. But when you go to pay your franchise tax, you can just use the "assumed par value" method and pay what is typically a very small amount. I'll shoot you an email on this as well!
swampthing··on Launch HN: Axdraft (YC W19) - Legal documents for startups in minutes
Congrats on launching! On this:

> Our main differences compared to Clerky, LegalZoom, RocketLawyer and similar solutions are: 1. we focus on startups, which makes the content more tailored

We (Clerky) are exclusively focused on startups. We started Clerky specifically because there was no online service that was suitable for startups. Not sure if you meant for that first point to only apply to LegalZoom or RocketLawyer, but I wanted to clarify that.

Good luck with everything!

swampthing··on A History of Singapore in 10 Dishes
Hainan was part of Guangdong province until the late 1980s – so I think the dish is Cantonese to begin with. My understanding is that it spread to other places from there. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hainanese_chicken_rice

swampthing··on Ask HN: Recommendations for running a US company with all revenue in crypto?
I'm one of the co-founders of Clerky, thanks for using us! Have you tried Silver Lake Bank? I don't know them personally, but they're known for being more friendly toward crypto startups.
swampthing··on China lands Chang'e-4 on far side of Moon
Well, that makes sense. If they thought you were a Chinese person, I could see why they would have asked you if you could read Chinese.
swampthing··on China lands Chang'e-4 on far side of Moon
That's very interesting to hear. I wonder if it is something specific to that corporation, or perhaps your role at the corporation, though? All the Chinese-born people I know would be pretty surprised if any non-Chinese person could read Chinese.
swampthing··on How the Finnish survive without small talk
I don't know what countries you were referring to, but that's definitely not the case in China (home to a few billions).
