swagmoose··on Seven books I keep close because I love them
I loved the Netflix adaptation. I ignorantly missed the part about it being a book and am so excited to dive into it.
swagmoose··on [dead]
who else was woken up in the middle of the night for on-call pages because of cloudflare?
swagmoose··on In memory of the Christmas Island shrew
I think I knew this deep down, but I am curious if there's "extinct (with the usual disclaimers)" and "extinct (it ain't comin back)". i.e. the Christmas Island Shrew vs. the Dodo
swagmoose··on Today is when the Amazon brain drain sent AWS down the spout
context... it's not just for LLMs
swagmoose··on Millennials Are Becoming Boomers
I gotta wonder how much of this wealth change is self-earned vs. inheritance (or benevolence) of our boomer parents.
swagmoose··on L402: The Missing Piece in the Internet's Payment Infrastructure
Do you think you're being reasonable in saying that? I think micropayments are desperately needed, and I don't see modern payment networks doing anything to get there
swagmoose··on 25 years of video clips gone as Paramount axes Comedy Central wesbite
I knew it was bad, I didn't know it was $14 billion bad. Did they spend it all on their two terrible streaming apps?
swagmoose··on A 45 year engineer clears up electric sauna ventilation
been browsing r/sauna for years in the lead up to building my own sauna. Those trumpkin notes really are the key. It's unfortunate that the sauna industry has very few (if any) DIY kits that follow best practices for traditional saunas
swagmoose··on Montage fallacy
I often think back to a scene in BoJack Horseman, when he starts jogging and collapses at the top of a hill. A veteran runner sees him and says:

"It gets easier. Every day it gets a little easier. But you gotta do it every day — that’s the hard part. But it does get easier".

The gym, self-care, flossing. The list goes on, but that scene really clicked for me.

swagmoose··on We've already seen category 6 hurricanes – scientists want to make it official
"multiple storms have already spilled over into the hypothetical category 6"

If they do go this route, I'd like it if they future-proofed it and include categories 6-10. Seems inevitable we're gonna see the first category 7 in the next 5-10 years.

swagmoose··on The FAA's Hiring Scandal: A Quick Overview
Part of this tweet[1] stood out to me. I wish I was more optimistic about Buttigieg handling this appropriately, but I'm not aware of any significant action on his part over the Norfolk Southern freight explosion a year ago.

"He has been saddled with a messy, stupid lawsuit built on bad decision after bad decision, from predecessors who--between a rock and a hard place in the impossible task of avoiding disparate impact while preserving objective standards--elected to take the easy road and cave to political pressure to implement absurdities. He has extraordinary power to end this mess in a moment and begin to make things right for those who were directly denied a chance at the jobs they had worked towards thanks to an arbitrary and perverse biographical questionnaire."

swagmoose··on Ask HN: What skill do you want to develop or improve in 2024?
1) SQL As a mainly frontend engineer I just haven't had a whole lot of exposure, but always experience friction against it while doing side projects.

2) Woodworking

After finally diving in earlier this year, really took to it as a nice break from screens. Taking this winter break to organize my garage and set up proper dust collection so I can stop creating layers of sawdust in my garage (and probably my lungs).

swagmoose··on How the Baltic states became the hub of crypto money laundering and fraud
Episode 390: We Set Up An Offshore Company In A Tax Haven

It's been a long time, but remember thinking how well done it was. TLDR was (as previous poster mentioned) that Delaware corps were best for anonymity.

swagmoose··on U.S. Department of Defense Launches All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office Website
My mind instantly went to the show "Ghosted" where Craig Robinson and Adam Scott worked at "The Bureau Underground" investigating unexplained phenomena (ghosts, aliens, cryptids).

Got a good laugh out of the line "committed to transparency". I'd hope so but I'm not counting on it

swagmoose··on Why did people in the past look so much older?
I've noticed this with presidents as well, the before & after pictures of president Obama looked much longer than the 8 years that had passed between them.
swagmoose··on Ancient fires drove large mammals extinct, study suggests
This sounds a lot like Ancient Apocalypse on Netflix, but that was released in 2022
