sw1205··on Solo founders with profitable businesses, collected stories
It always amazes me [wrongly] how much money niche sites/services can make.
sw1205··on [dead]
Awesome :) Will drop you a note now!
sw1205··on [dead]
Great thanks! Glad you like it! We've some ideas - we think it'd make a cool iPad app and have also explored merchandising opportunites but for now we are just enjoying seeing people come to a site we created! It's a bit of a buzz for us and if it doesn't make any money but people like our site, and get inspired by our content, then that's a real win for us.

Hi guys,

We launched our weekend project about 2 weeks ago (http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5206662). And have made a lot of improvements, including the ability to sign up to daily emails.

However, our big development is we found the layout of our site played nicely to include tributes of people who have changed the world - like Steve Jobs. So on some days, we will provide slideshows, like this one which showcase an indivduals best quotes.

So our site has morphed into a daily inspiration site but also tribute pages to those who inspire us the most.

We'd love to hear your feedback if you have any.

Thanks, sw1205 and jebarnes88

sw1205··on My favorite ever Aaron Swartz quote - Be Curious
For full disclosure - my friend (sw007) and I run this site. We don't make money from the site - it's just a fun project. But this is one of our favorite ever quotes and figured HN crowd would like it and we wanted to share it with you as it not a particularly well known quote.

Thanks

Steve

Thanks - really appreciate it. Sorry again.

It's not the first 11,000 - it seems they could have 100,000 apply but they select which 11,000 go in to the club. So you may be wasting your time writing a bot..

Ah no, so I run overground and work out the routes before each run - so I actually run a lot further than the tracks but I hit every tube station and get a picture outside each one!
sw1205··on Ask HN: Ideas on how to change the Culture at a big Corporate Bank
This is great - thanks for all your comments guys. I will read through all these links and build them into the presentation. I will also share the presentation with you all if any of you are interested.
sw1205··on Ask HN: Why is Google not offering real time analytics?
I find getclicky a good alternative. It also has a neat iPhone app - clickytouch.
sw1205··on Ask HN: A possible Delicious Alternative?
Thanks for the feedback - we will look at the bug you mention now.

To change your backdrop there is an option 'change your backdrop' under 'create a new bookmark' - we can make that stand out more. You can then use some of our sample ones or upload your own - once clicked or uploaded it saves it automatically.

The first way we differ is that we are free, I appreciate people may be willing to pay for their service but for now we are free and all users who sign up now will not have to pay. Secondly is that I guess we are a bookmarking site aimed at more creative types. Pinboard is a great site functionailty wise and speed wise but you could argue it lacks in appearance. We hope that we offer a lot of the functionality Pinboard do but also you can bookmark in a nice looking site.

We have modertators who will look to fight spam and if we eventually add a fee for the service this should also prevent it.

I should rephrase - we will do everything in our power to ensure we won't close down.

Thanks for the feedback

sw1205··on Ask HN: A possible Delicious Alternative?
Yes I should edit my comment - it is not closing down but favilous remains an alternative, we hope a credible one!
sw1205··on Ask HN: A possible Delicious Alternative?
Specifically to our site - if you see an article you like but don't have to read it, then you can use our bookmark it with 1 click of a button and save it to view later. You can also organise all your bookmarks in an easy way and follow people who you find bookmark interesting things.
sw1205··on Ask HN: A possible Delicious Alternative?
It was only meant to be a light hearted joke. However if you want a serious reply - Yahoo bought Delicious and then a few years later they decide they want to possibly close down Delicious thus panicking users everywhere. We are focused on our userbase and would not want to put our site, which some of our users rely on, in any danger of closing and thereby forcing users to lose their bookmarks.
sw1205··on Ask HN: A possible Delicious Alternative?
With Delicious closing down we thought we would recommend our bookmarking site - Favilous. We promise never to sell to Yahoo so there will be no chance of us closing down! We had been working on a major revamp of the site and it just so happened Delicious made their announcement (or didn't make their announcement!) when we were about to press the launch button.

What do we offer?

Bookmark quickly and effectively for free.

Attractive site with users having the ability to customise backgrounds and arrange bookmarks in categories.

Save articles for viewing later - so now you can bookmark and view sites later, a combination we do not think exists.

Users can see what sites are hot and what sites are popular.

Social - Follow people who bookmark things of interest.

Bookmark things on the fly with a click of a button and it saves it to your inbox for viewing later.

View what the community is bookmarking - this page is of great value as it offers descriptions of the sites that are being bookmarked.

Import bookmarks from various sources including delicious.

Background We are a 2 man startup from the UK. We are bootstrapped. We have thousands of links already bookmarked from thousands of different users.

We would love to know what you think and what feedback you may have so that we can improve the service for new and existing users.

thanks!

sw1205··on The Best Services for Migrating Your Delicious Bookmarks
My friend and I have been working on a new bookmarking service - http://favilous.com - we are free, and we are currently working on allowing users to import delicious bookmarks.
sw1205··on Launching Posterous Groups: Smart email lists made easy
How is this different to frid.ge or neetly.com?
sw1205··on Ask HN: How can banks improve their branches?
Yes great point - I have never understood why all branch's are only open whilst we are at work
sw1205··on 1 month ago I asked HN why you could not like Twitter statuses...now you can
Here was the original thread - http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1794196

There was some great discussion around it from HN members, I wonder if the person who created the plugin read the comments?

We are still in Alpha and so there is a lot of things we want to still do but for now we had a minimum viable product and hope to keep developing it.

We wanted to allow people to vote, just like they can on here, in case they wanted to create networks on their passions. I have a football network with my mates and we find the voting works really well. Interesting links are at the top and boring links find their way to the bottom.

We also want people to be able to chat and post/vote from the home view but for now we wanted to launch the site and then iterate afterwards. This will take place though.

With regard to stackoverflow - we will take a look. Chat is quite primitive at the moment but again something we hope to improve.

When you sign up you can change your header. If you go to settings, design then you can change the colour of the headers and icons
sw1205··on Ask HN: Please rate our startup Neetly
We set out to allow people to create their own news networks and incorporated the cms-style options and chat options later. We want to be able to create a secured Reddit - let people create their own version of Hacker News.

I think the concepts are similar although I think we are different in a few ways. I think we sit somewhere between creating your own social network and a cms, so its suitable for groups of friends or businesses alike. The focus on is also on the network rather than you as an individual, although we will be looking to allow the user to choose in the future, for example by being able to post to all their networks in a single-click.

sw1205··on Ask HN: Please rate our startup Neetly
If you roll over the different options 'post, share and chat' it gives you some more info about what we are trying to do. We will look to make it clearer.

There is a return to neetly home in the top right hand corner (after you have clicked sample network) - again can make this clearer.

sw1205··on Ask HN: Please rate our startup Neetly
Yes, it was even more buried before the start of the day and we moved it to what we hoped was a more prominent position today! We will make it more prominent, thanks for the feedback
sw1205··on Ask HN: Please rate our startup Neetly
Can easily implement the password change. How would you like to see chat implemented? More along the Facebook lines?

Thanks for creating a network, is it something you could see yourself using?

sw1205··on Ask HN: Please rate our startup Neetly
Thanks. We will look to replace the word network then and go with something more appropriate. We had never considered that people would take it to be a VPN type idea and the fact that people are means that we will definitely change the word.
sw1205··on Ask HN: Please rate our startup Neetly
It is similar to Yahoo groups but it can also be used like a secure reddit. So you can create a network, like Hacker News, invite who it is you want to join your network and then post (just like Hacker news) interesting articles that people in the network can then comment on. We also offer the users the ability to share files. So we hope we offer something different, and better, to Yahoo groups.
sw1205··on Ask HN: Please rate our startup Neetly
We will look to explain it better on the homepage - Our unique selling point is the ability to create private networks which can be joined by trusted people, and for the individual, the ability to be part of multiple networks which are separate from each other. So if I am a member of a friends network and a family network, my family don't get to talk or see my friends. If I am a small business, then I have the ability to communicate with my small distributed team in a social/group like way. If I am part of a study group, I have the opportunity to share documents and research links. It is entirely possible that I might cross paths with the same people on different neetly networks, but my relationship is primarily with the networks I am a member of.

We obviously, like you say, need to explain that better on the homepage so everyone gets what it is as soon as they hit Neetly.

Excellent, glad you like the idea. If after trying it feel free to drop us some feedback on here or via the contact us section the site. Thanks
