sw1205··on Ask HN: Please rate our startup Neetly
Neetly enables you to create one or many secure networks. You can create them for your family, friends, for a large community or for just yourself. You control invites to the network. You can use neetly to post articles for discussion, you can share files, including photos, within your network. You can also engage in chat with other people from your network.

We found we wanted to discuss some things with certain groups of people - such as work colleagues, or share pictures with different people such as family. We found there was not an effective tool out there to do it so we created Neetly. Now you can share and say what you want and to whom you want.

We are in the early stages and have decided we have a product which we can release but one that needs to be developed based on feedback that we hope we receive. We want to create a tool that you want to use, that you feel safe using and that you recommend to others so please help us achieve these aims by giving us feedback. Thanks in advance for any feedback that you give to us.

sw1205··on Ask HN: How can banks use the Internet to better serve their customers?
Yes I definitely will. There is so much great stuff here that I can use. The quality of discussion within Hacker News never ceases to amaze me. I don't think big company execs realise this community exists, if they did and they asked the appropriate questions they could really do some great things which would then in turn benefit all it's customers (a lot of us in this community) greatly. Will report back in two weeks on how it went.

Thanks again.

Could Twitter be of any use to banks? I have noticed that very few, if any, banks use Twitter. If they used it in a Dell like fashion to promote banks products at a reduced price or if they used it in a purely customer help way would this be of benefit?
sw1205··on Ask HN: How can banks use the Internet to better serve their customers?
If it categorises it correctly this could be a great tool. I could set a budget for say my food shopping and get push notifications when I am about to go above my budget.
sw1205··on Ask HN: How can banks use the Internet to better serve their customers?
BankSimple's founder has hit it on the head:

"If you log in to say Bank of America or Chase, the application is clunky, it feels very fragile, it breaks all the time, it’s hard to find the information, it doesn’t work like a machine. If you use Facebook, there’s an expected way for things to work. It’s a more pleasurable experience"

sw1205··on Ask HN: How can banks use the Internet to better serve their customers?
Excellent, thanks. I will check out those companies that you mention.

As you say I think all bank website desginers must have gone to the same college and been taught by a flawed professer.

I think the biggest challenge for banks is to provide the enormous amounts of information that they hold on us in a clearer way. People get lost at the moment, as soon as banks can deliver information in a more straight forward way the sooner they will convert the traditionalists who insist on doing things at the branch. I am convinced people still feel they have to bank in a branch because the internet solution that banks have provided is just not good enough.

sw1205··on Ask HN: How can banks use the Internet to better serve their customers?
A really simple thing that banks could add is that in Englan when I login to my banks website and I then have a question, I have to pick up the phone, go through 100s of security questions and then I get to speak to someone and I get to ask my question. For the life of me I don't understand why there is not a live web chat on the page. I have already gone through security, I should be able to ping a question to someone online who then responds instantly. It would save an awful lot of hassle.
sw1205··on Ask HN: How can banks use the Internet to better serve their customers?
It is the same over here - I can print off Statements but they are not 'official' instead they are a list of transactions with the bank logo but they can not be used as a means of identification which is sometimes needed. I used to work in a call centre and this greatly frustrated people.
sw1205··on Ask HN: How can banks use the Internet to better serve their customers?
That's a great idea. My housemates all use a notepad and pen to write their weekly/monthly budget out and like you say they seperate that into different categories. Their bank should provide a form for them to write in their budget and then like you say they should then get alerted when they are about to go over their budget.

This is partiuclarly the case when someone approaches their overdraft limit. In England if you go past this limit you get charged £38 even if you a few pence past the limit. This has been heavily in the news over here and banks should help customers by alerting them when they get near to that limit.

sw1205··on Ask HN: Have you ever saved your employer big money through simple change?
£5m per year! I am now almost embarassed to share my screensaver story! It is amazing how people can make massive savings or generate huge revenue through things that they themselves have done and not get rewarded for it. Companies then wonder why they lose their best talent..
sw1205··on Ask HN: Have you ever saved your employer big money through simple change?
Yes I definitely will! It will at least make up for the other objectives that I have failed at miserably!
sw1205··on Ask HN: Why is there no 'like' button on Twitter?
Sorry I misunderstood your point - you are right they don't have to. We don't want two sites doing the same thing. I think Twitter is doing a good job forging it's own identity, it is Facebook that seems to be borrowing ideas from everywhere else - Foursquare etc. I do think however that 'like' could be useful for Twitter and they could implement it in a different way. I take your point though.
sw1205··on Ask HN: Why is there no 'like' button on Twitter?
Really fair set of comments. At times Facebook can feel like one big bolt on and twitter have done well to avoid that. I just wondered why when a feature as big as Facebook Like could work on Twitter why (if it hasn't already been) it has not been considered.
sw1205··on Ask HN: Why is there no 'like' button on Twitter?
I totally agree. This could then lead itself to an improved likestream which could then take on Digg seriously.
sw1205··on Ask HN: Why is there no 'like' button on Twitter?
They don't. However Facebook felt the need to borrow Twitters @replies (http://mashable.com/2009/09/10/facebook-mentions/) so why can't Twitter borrow the Facebook like.

Yes they are different sites and yes they serve different purposes. However if functionality can work on both and can aid the users of that site then why should it not be introuced - just because you can already do it on one is not a good enough reason. If it was then you would not see competitors coming out daily with new sites that do what existing sites do but try and better it.

Twitter has millions of users who do not have a Facebook account and vice-versa. Providing they don't move too much from what makes them unique then giving their user base useful features can only be a good thing.

sw1205··on Ask HN: Why is there no 'like' button on Twitter?
Yes a dislike button is a must! I thought the star was me favouriting a tweet. I can see it but the person who's tweet is can't see that I have done that. I could be wrong though and like you say Facebook like is not for everyone anyway.
sw1205··on Ask HN: Why is there no 'like' button on Twitter?
If I like something in Facebook then only the person who's status it is sees that like. It does not appear in my stream to all my friends. If I RT something on Twitter then I am saying that I want all my followers to see this status. I don't want that, I just want to tell someone that I like their status without involving all my followers.
sw1205··on Ask HN: Why is there no 'like' button on Twitter?
The Facebook Status and the Twitter status are fundamentally the same thing. You are telling the world what is on your mind. The like functionality in Facebook is a means of communication - someone clicks like and says I like your opinion on this, your good news, your joke, the fact you are in a good mood.

Now if Twitter has the same status functionality could 'like' not be equally effective?

sw1205··on Ask HN: Why is there no 'like' button on Twitter?
I appreciate that it is not for everyone, but given how many people use the Facebook like functionality do you think that this could not carry over to Twitter and be equally effective?
sw1205··on Ask HN: Network based bookmarking - could it be useful?
That FAQ is almost exactly what we want to offer. I have completely different bookmarks at work to what I do at home. People at work would find my browser bookmarks really useful but some of these are sensative and have no place in the cloud. The idea therefore is to create a solution for this problem (if one does not exist already).
sw1205··on Ask HN: Network based bookmarking - could it be useful?
Yes that is more or less it. If for example you work for a company and have company based bookmarks - you could create a work network (like Yammer) and you can then bookmark just like you would normally with say Delicious - add tags, categories etc.

However other people in your company could join your network and you can then see what each other are bookmarking (it is social bookmarking but with a like minded audience). No one could see into your network except the members of that network.

This could be something fun like a sports club based network where like minded people are all bookmarking useful sporting sites etc or it could work for a business who want to share work links.

sw1205··on Ask HN: What payment model should I adopt for my new site?
I am not sure we can to be honest. The site will run itself and will not need much in the way of support. We imagine the user may be willing to pay a fee for a number of benefits that they will get from the site. However, if I put myself into the user's shoes, then I would definitely pay a one off fee for the benefits that the site gives but I am not sure I would be willing to pay a monthly fee.

I am the type of user who is willing to pay $10 a year and gamble on something as I have only lost $10 - I can then forget about it if it does not work out. However a monthly fee I found off putting - the thought of money coming out of my account each month until I cancel (which I would probably be too lazy to do) puts me off. That's why I think app's work so well for Apple. I pay a one off fee and I forget about it.

sw1205··on Ask HN: What payment model should I adopt for my new site?
Yes that sounds the way to go - see above for the type of site I am offering. You are right - freemium seems the buzz at the moment. I was even thinking of a novel payment model like Radiohead (the music band) have done in England whereby they have said the customer can pay what they like for the album. I thought of doing something similar for my site - pay what you want for an account, it's risky but it is quite niche and could gain me some attention.
sw1205··on Ask HN: What payment model should I adopt for my new site?
That's great thanks. You are right - I prefer to pay a one off fee but I know of people who are happy to pay small monthly sums and so I think it is logical to offer both.
sw1205··on Ask HN: What payment model should I adopt for my new site?
Thanks for this. Yeah I have been doing a lot of reading around and have found there to be no magic formula - you are right there a lot of factors that will influence my decision.

I would show the site to get a proper discussion going but it is still a few weeks away from being ready. The site is a bookmarking site and follows the pinboard model but I have over the past few months submitted some bookmarking discussion questions to try and find what people want from a bookmarking site and what currently is missing.

I appreciate that a lot of people will not pay for bookmarking but Pinboard seem to have captured a market and I believe there is still more customers to gain providing you can get the site, and the pricing model, right.

sw1205··on Ask HN: How did you meet your cofounder?
I saw this earlier and this is why I think a co-founder should be a friend.

'What is a friend? I will tell you...it is someone with whom you dare to be yourself."

This is so important when working together, you need to be able to tell them exactly how you feel, to receive honest feedback and take it in the right way.

Brothers/Sisters and or friends, I think, make the best co-founders. As it is with these people that we can be ourselves which can only be good for your startup. If you go into business with someone then you need to trust them implicitly, if you have this level of trust in place then I firmly believe your partnership can flourish and therefore so can your startup.

sw1205··on Show HN: My weekend project - minimotivation.com
This is just brilliant! Great work! I think you should be able to click the quote to go to the next one rather than having to go to the bottom of the page and click refresh. Other than that I loved it!
sw1205··on Ask HN: Please re-review my new website www.favilous.com
Thanks very much for this.

I can see that quite a few people are struggling with the playing of the tour - we will have to make this more obvious. I don't think Prezi offer an easy autoplay option.

You are right with regard to the user experience and this is something that again we are rolling out in the next two weeks. We have made a video of a user bookmarking, discovering and doing other bits and pieces to do with the site. We will post this somewhere on the site (still to be decided!) and hopefully this can solve this issue as you are right from the homepage you still don't get a complete feel as to what Favilous does.

May well take you up on the email option - thank you for this. Also, we are offering a yammer style service to the worker (see my comments below). Would like to know what you think of this?

thanks

sw1205··on Ask HN: Please re-review my new website www.favilous.com
One of our ideas that we are thinking of is 'work networks' - very much like Yammer. We aim to position ourselves, in the next couple of months or so, as a Yammer for bookmarking.

We will still offer the same 'personal service' for our users but we will also go down this other route. Like Yammer people will be able to create and then join a private work network. You will be able to bookmark work links and documents as part of your work network and build up your Favilous work page. You can share these with other people from your network and your network is private - you cannot see out and other's cannot see in.

Would this feature be of use do you think? As I say we are a couple of months away but I know I would use it and find it useful so I am hoping others may feel the same way!

Any feedback on this would be most welcome...
