this only goes up to one mile. Chicxulub was six miles.
svnpenn··on The Wyoming corner crossing case
completely agree. the answer here is so stupidly obvious, that it shouldn't even need a trial.

even if some public land was fully blocked in by private land, the public still has every right to access that land. If that means moving through private land to get to it, so be it. If the owner dont like it, they can sell and buy some other land that is less public-adjacent.

svnpenn··on WTF Is T_paamayim_nekudotayim (2013)
> you lack the background knowledge to recognize that

you want someone to stop, but yet you continually insult them, and crawl through their previous comments in order to avoid actually countering points made. I would like you to stop.

svnpenn··on WTF Is T_paamayim_nekudotayim (2013)
ah, so you'd rather dig into someones comment history, then actually address the argument made. they have a name for that:

svnpenn··on The War on General Purpose Computing (2015) [video]
did you watch the video? Its about DRM, not really anything your comment is covering.
svnpenn··on Samsung’s Android app-signing key has leaked, is being used to sign malware
> Google could do what Apple does, and allow sideloading for a limited time only to those with a paid developer account.

that is the worst idea I have heard in a long time. what happens to developers, like me, that cannot afford a "paid developer account"? and whats to stop Google (or Apple) from raising the fee so high that it prices out important people from the process?

svnpenn··on WTF Is T_paamayim_nekudotayim (2013)
Do you realize how ridiculous you sound? 99% of people aren't going to know how to pronounce this, and even ones that think they do probably get it wrong.
svnpenn··on Samsung’s Android app-signing key has leaked, is being used to sign malware
> The main issue to me seems to be sideloading apps

I think you could phrase that better. Sideloading apps is not an "issue", it's an incredibly important tool that developers can use to audit the behavior of apps.

svnpenn··on Fosshost Is Shutting Down
URLs from tv.apple.com, paramountplus.com, roku.com. Although to be fair, most (all?) of those URLs expire after one hour or so, so its purely to test parsing the playlist files
svnpenn··on Fosshost Is Shutting Down
> There's really no reason not to host on industry-standard free hosting, ie Github

GitHub will autoban accounts that post certain content. For example, I had an account for three years, with hundreds of stars across different repos. I pushed an M3U8 file containing content that GitHub didn't like for some reason, boom, account dead. No warning, not even an email with explanation.

Every single issue or comment that I ever posted across three years is now gone.

svnpenn··on Instagram Is Over
the login wall is what killed it for me. try this link in a private window:

https://instagram.com/p/ClCFeRSjOXo

if you hit refresh 5 times, even slowly, you get blocked until you login. I shouldn't have to login just to view a post.

svnpenn··on Twenty five thousand dollars of funny money
here it is with Go:

    package main

    type km int

    func (distance km) launch_rocket() {}

    func main() {
       distance_miles := 42
       // type int has no field or method launch_rocket
       // distance_miles.launch_rocket()

       // this works, but is obviously wrong:
       km(distance_miles).launch_rocket()
    }
svnpenn··on The impotence of being clever
I dont know if Reddit has always been like this, but it is now. Essentially 90% of all top level comments are some dumbass joke, or some pop culture reference, or some winking cutesie reply. It makes me sick just thinking about it. I'm not saying it all has to be high minded essays for every comment, but what you have now is the equivalent of elementary school playground talk. Grow the fuck up.

> 1080p

I dont think you (and the public in general) realize that several sites offer 1080p, even with L3.

svnpenn··on How Stuff Gets eXposed
> Widevine

its pretty widely available how to get around this now. I have my own implementation actually. I wont say its "easy", but it is doable. And you can get quite a lot even with just an L3 CDM. Also at least one public Widevine proxy is now available, as well as a content key database.

> The extraction of these keys would then allow anyone to play UHD Blu-Rays outside of Intel SGX.

AS IT SHOULD BE. UHD Blu-Rays are not cheap [1]. If I am going to buy one, I damn sure should able to play it using whatever program I want. Its quite sad how many people have just accepted this reality without a fight. If you buy an apple (the fruit), does the grocery store get to choose what knife you use to cut it, or what plate you use to serve it?

svnpenn··on US reps urge DOJ to investigate anticompetitive conduct affecting apartment rent
> The nastiest one is big tech.

True.

> These companies should be broken up.

True.

> The fact Twitter was able to get away with kicking off a US President without any ramifications is frightening.

ah, what? You seem to have conveniently left out the fact that he had a significant role in the attempted overthrow of the US government? What do you expect Twitter to do? Just let it happen unchecked? "all enemies foreign and domestic" remember?

svnpenn··on Ask HN: Are companies becoming increasingly pushy? If so why?
> LinkedIn

yeah, I basically just stopped using the site. I used it for a while when job hunting, but now I maybe login once a week or something. otherwise, since the site blocks anonymous use, I simply don't use it.

> Instagram

I have an account, but I don't post or comment, so I am not going to log in just to view shit. So I basically don't use the site anymore. If someone links to a post I will check it out, but usually you get login prompt after viewing like 5 posts, so at that point I am just done with Instagram for the day.

> Twitter

Twitter gives you like 10 comments before login prompt, so I just leave the site for the day after that.

> Medium

Medium is horrible, so nothing lost.

svnpenn··on NopeCHA: Captcha Solver
this is obviously wrong, for reason I already gave. many times you can click one or two boxes, even though more "correct" boxes might exist. I dont want to click more than needed, thats wasted time. Although to be fair my method is probably slower overall.
svnpenn··on NopeCHA: Captcha Solver
one thing that annoys me is they dont ask you HOW MANY boxes to check. So you dont know if you need to be "conservative" or "aggressive". So I started just clicking a single box, then if it prompts me I will keep adding one until I meet the requirement. I think sometimes its just one or two.

However some shitheads like Discord also wont tell you how many, and will also outright fail you if you click too few, forcing you to restart the whole multi-test process. So fuck all of it. I fully support this extension, they deserve what they get. They need to figure out how to make it hard to fake, without making it a nightmare for legitimate users.

svnpenn··on Ask HN: Can we delete our accounts?
you seem to think that because doing something is not perfect, then its not worth doing.

obviously you are wrong.

svnpenn··on A hundred UK companies sign up for four-day week with no loss of pay
> If the (overwhelming?) majority of staff in the company are

you could replace the end of that sentence, with any number of other options:

If the (overwhelming?) majority of staff in the company are [race]

If the (overwhelming?) majority of staff in the company are [gender]

If the (overwhelming?) majority of staff in the company are [age]

If the (overwhelming?) majority of staff in the company are [non-disabled]

Its only a source of friction, if the majority makes it one. And just like the other options, it could be seen as a form of discrimination. Someone can work four days, and still be a valuable member of the team, maybe even more than "five day" workers.

svnpenn··on A hundred UK companies sign up for four-day week with no loss of pay
sounds like you just need more confidence in yourself. This doesn't need to be "norm" worldwide or even company wide for you to start doing it. All it takes is for you to have the will to decide that this is something you want and are going to do.

good joke

svnpenn··on I/O is no longer the bottleneck
> doesn't take into account the information you would need to learn anything about which candidate equivalency relation is better

OK, no one said it did that. Its purely comparing characters, which is and always was what I said it was doing. And somehow it took 5 comments before you even decided to actually read the answer. Maybe next time you should start by actually reviewing and understanding what you are commenting on, before making multiple comments.

svnpenn··on The Citroen Ami – tiny electric car with no boot, 28mph top speed, 46 mile range
right, but you understand that people go other places besides the supermarket right? hence why I said "toy vehicle". If you are only using this for a single destination, then its not a general purpose vehicle, its a "toy vehicle" or "single purpose" vehicle.
