svelle··on Japan halves speed limit to 30km/h on all narrow city streets
It's been the same in Germany. Literally everyone drives over the speed limit all of the time. 30km/h is somewhat stuck to when it's near a school but everywhere else people just drive faster because the fines were ridiculously low for the longest time.
svelle··on How do I permanently disable random Google Photos popup to backup photos? (2024)
This happens exactly because you're not on Chrome. For some reason the sign in with Google pop up only triggers on non-chrome browsers. Especially on Firefox.
svelle··on ChatGPT, Roblox to fall under strictest EU rules for platforms
How are loot boxes different from slot machines? The underlying psychological mechanics are very similar if not the same.
svelle··on Keychron announces first open-source firmware for gaming mice
Have been using one of their keyboards for two years switching between windows and macos and that key was not the one that wore out first. Plus on most keyboards you could configure the layout switch with qmk anyways.
svelle··on Which streaming service was that on again
IMDb shows this. But also, since the author of the blog post is seemingly German, there's http://werstreamt.es (who streams it) that does exactly that. Showing you what streams were (flatrate vs on demand).
svelle··on Hetzner Price Adjustment
It's old servers they have already written off and would otherwise decommission. You're basically only paying for power and network traffic.
svelle··on Reading for pleasure is sharply down among schoolkids, report shows
> There is an incentive to make games addictive.

It's not just games though, it's pretty much every digital service now.

Virtually every website has infinite scrolling and algorithms that tailor the feed directly to what "appeals" to the user now. It's all just drip-feeding dopamine to the user base so they stay engaged for the longest possible time.

svelle··on Vinyl succumbs to Loudness War: more than just collateral damage (2025)
> but neural-networks can separate them in practice

That's a massive stretch.

They are able separate them sort of, but they are nowhere close the original quality of the individual tracks.

svelle··on Various LLM Smells
IMO LLM writing hasn't significantly improved since maybe GPT4. It still does the exact same "It's not x, it's actually y" tropes and many of the other common LLM smells. Most LLM generated text is immediately discernible as such.
svelle··on Thoughts and feelings around Claude Design
Yes, they only do SVGs.

I'm actually glad they're focusing on code, and code adjacent tooling only.

svelle··on The worst volume control UI in the world (2017)
That would be bandcamp, where the free/preview player doesn't have a volume control but the library player does.
svelle··on He built a hit podcast about the Epstein files. It's AI-generated
It's the NotebookLM podcast generator voices, it just does it for you once you add all the data to NLM.
svelle··on Your app subscription is now my weekend project
My first thought as well, there is (or was) also Cisco Jabber which I wouldn't touch with a ten feet pole. It's generally a good idea to Google the name of the software you're about to publish online at least once.
svelle··on Network of Scottish X accounts go dark amid Iran blackout
It's pretty much all laid out on Wikipedia.

He initially supported the Democratic Party but because of crypto and AI he donated millions to super PACs for Trump, supported DOGE and said that children are now being readicalized to hate capitalism as well as directly messaging the Trump administration to put pressure on Universities like NSF, SU and MIT because of DEI or something like that.

svelle··on Fahrplan – 39C3
A lot if not most of the talks will be recorded, yes.
svelle··on Is Northern Virginia still the least reliable AWS region?
> A true cloud disaster would be something like a major S3 data loss event

So like the OVH data center fire back in 2021?

svelle··on Noclip.website – A digital museum of video game levels
Yes! I loved the thread on twitter back in the day where Jasper explained how he implemented the Half-Life 2 water shader using the two camera method.

I can wholeheartedly recommend going through his account there and on bsky, lot's of interesting stuff.

svelle··on Klarna says AI drive has helped halve staff numbers and boost pay
>[...] it doesn't make sense to include it as part of the "average compensation".

Unless you want to artificially boost your numbers to sound better in the press release.

svelle··on Klarna says AI drive has helped halve staff numbers and boost pay
Yes. Although it seems they didn't rehire, but just reassigned people from other parts of the org.

svelle··on Blender 5.0
I think they build body worn and other antenna systems.
svelle··on A vision of chocolate's future in an Amsterdam brownie
Here in Germany meat alternatives/substitutes have definitely reached a level of popularity that goes beyond a fad. The leading commercial producer of deli-meats has started producing vegetarian and vegan alternative products that now make up more than 60% of their annual revenue and they even dropped some of their original meat based products in favor of the plant-based alternatives.

It might not be the burger that's going to be replaced but sliced meats and other meat based products might be.

svelle··on OpenAI DevDay 2025: Opening keynote [video]
Probably didn't want to risk the same embarrassment that was the Meta live demo.
svelle··on Way past its prime: how did Amazon get so rubbish?
> Another time I bought a Samsung Fold and it cracked down the middle. I told Amazon and they said they'll refund it under warranty. I sent it back and got a warning that if I return anything else in "non original condition" I'd be banned. Even though it was a warranty return.

I once ordered a new pair of Jeans, expensive ones because I wanted them to last, from Amazon and got an obviously used and ripped pair sent to me.

I sent it back, noted that in my reason for sending it back only to receive an email from them with the same sentiment as you got. Luckily I kept all the receipts (figuratively) and took a lot of photos and screenshots.

Reaching out to support they apologized profusely to me but still it left a very bad taste in my mouth and I'm sure it'll happen again sometime in the future.

svelle··on 60 years after Gemini, newly processed images reveal details
I understood it less as an attempt of improvement and more as an alternate version of the same shot. Where you see more of Aldrin and other smaller bits that were less visible in the original and rightfully iconic shot.
svelle··on From M1 MacBook to Arch Linux: A month-long experiment that became permanenent
I also use a MacBook as my daily driver, but have used different ThinkPads for years and there is no way that that workload should bring any medium specced TP to its knees like you're describing.
svelle··on Airbus A320 Poised to Overtake Boeing 737 as Most-Delivered Commercial Airliner
Or Microsoft. For all I know it primarily kills competition...
svelle··on A spellchecker used to be a major feat of software engineering (2008)
After having used the IntelliJ/PyCharm spellchecker for German quite extensively I can only attest to this. It's so much more than just checking is a word is spelled correctly.

On the other hand, I did use Grammarly for a while and ultimately became annoyed at its tendency to keep "re-adjusting" sentences after it had already fixed them, so there is a fine line to walk.

svelle··on Dyson, techno-centric design and social consumption
I have a v12 and I couldn't be happier. Best cordless vacuum I've owned. Had an aeg before that was about half the price. But it sucked.

Still some of the criticism holds, such as the terrible wall charger.

svelle··on A receipt printer cured my procrastination
Unless they have explicitly disabled it even m365 has the option to add a totp 2fa method. Might be worth double checking.
svelle··on Danish Ministry Replaces Windows and Microsoft Office with Linux and LibreOffice
Curious why it's based on Distros primarily backed by US-based companies and not something like SUSE?
