susanthenerd··on Fixing a bricked Framework laptop
Honestly, this is why I like Dutch consumer law. Dutch law states that the guarantee duration is dependent on the expected lifespan of a product. Continued official BIOS support is evidence that the device remains within its supported lifetime and also dutch law treats defective or incomplete updates as non-conformity. Therefore, in this situation it would be framework fault and the device would also be within warranty.
susanthenerd··on Framework Laptop 13 Pro
I had to fight support for multiple times over the las 3 years of having mine due to repeated issues, breach of statutory warranty and so on

> The best fit would be companies like Hashicorp who have strong open source pedigree so users won’t be turned off and leave

HashiCorp might not be the best fit anymore. Last year, they switched to a license that isn't open source: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37081306

You know if you click on the timestamp on a comment there is a flag button?

Also you are right comments like this are very annoying. I'm still surprised that HN doesn't have some kind of spam filter or rate limit

susanthenerd··on Ask HN: How do you keep track of “Log in with” accounts
1password has a decent system for also tracking sign in with accounts
susanthenerd··on How to Set Up a Discord Server for Your Open Source Community
I think setting up a server isn't the real problem. The bigger problem is the idea of using discord for an open source community when there are solutions like IRC or Matrix which are actually open source. Not to mention that discord is going to start showing ads.

Another issue is that the article mentions using forums, which is a bad idea. Using forums the information is limited only to members of the discord server. Good luck finding something on google if it isn't even indexed.

The problem with Framework is that BIOS updates are really rare. I been running the 3.0.6-beta for my 12th gen for almost 8 months I think and the full release has yet to come. I bet it will never happen as they are focusing on AMD and 13th gen + 16" one at the moment.
susanthenerd··on My thoughts on the 2023 FTC robotics season
Should be renamed to 2022-2023 season. For me as an active member of a team I was thinking(when I read the title) that someone is just speculating on the current season theme as it has not been released yet. All we know is that it is called Centerstage and somehow it is related to arts.

I'm still in high school but here is my question. Would it be possible to create a startup on a F-1 visa(student visa) and then sponsor yourself if the startup gets enough money to afford paying an employee and get a work visa that could later lead to a GC? Thanks

That is totally false. Any good web browser is asking for permission first.

susanthenerd··on Desktop Linux is insecure
> The main downside is no GPU acceleration of anything (framebuffer only), but it's somewhat less limiting than I'd assumed, and most of my machines maintain a dual boot of Ubuntu for anything GPU intensive, though I honestly use it a lot less than I'd assumed.

You are effectively making Qubes useless. The presence of any software that has access to the EFI partition outside Qubes renders it a highly vulnerable entry point for any form of malware, as it gives direct access to Xen.
