surrey-fringe··on Princeton University Math Major Course Guide
Yes, and a curriculum, and textbooks that contain everything you need to know for finals!
surrey-fringe··on Don't Give Up on the Guitar, Fender Is Begging You
Then you keep doing what you're doing, and when you're better than Ahmad Jamal he'll listen to you.
surrey-fringe··on List of Computer Science courses with video lectures
I'm glad Onur Mutlu's stuff is listed here. Best lecturer I've ever had.
surrey-fringe··on WikipediaP2P
It's often easier to convince someone that something's not a big deal than to convince them that people will solve it without government intervention.
surrey-fringe··on Airbnb expands to experiences
Wow, you are deep and impressive. Very cool!
surrey-fringe··on The P=?NP Poll (2002) [pdf]
Well I was open to evidence that applies generally, but sure.
surrey-fringe··on The P=?NP Poll (2002) [pdf]
Is that true -- that the proof (if we produce one) will be verifiable in polynomial time?
surrey-fringe··on Cartoon Laws of Physics
That's why I said go back to Canada...
surrey-fringe··on Putting Sugary Soda Out of Reach
Education is absolutely the same as prohibition when it's both compulsory and teaching falsehoods.
surrey-fringe··on Putting Sugary Soda Out of Reach
Great, also excited to hear your objections to health education in public schools. And the WHO. And food stamps that don't enable people to buy banana boo-boos.
surrey-fringe··on Nice People Really Do Have More Fun
It falls into an even rarer category, subtractive ∘ kleene(X)
surrey-fringe··on Nice People Really Do Have More Fun
There's a third kind. Let's call it X.

It's where you spend time devising philosophies on human nature that make you feel superior to others.

surrey-fringe··on A problem involving power series
I'm dumb
surrey-fringe··on A problem involving power series
This problem is interesting but not quite air-tight. You could just take the first sequence and set some element to 0 and you've got a new sequence that satisfies the property. Is he actually asking whether there's not another A between 0 and 1 such that the series converges for a_n = C(-A)^n?
surrey-fringe··on Do the math: too much calculus? (2012)
Berkeley's a really good university.
surrey-fringe··on The real Soylent sickness
That's awesome.
surrey-fringe··on The real Soylent sickness
>That being said, when compared to twinkies and sugary sodas it might still be better for you. Having it as part of a daily diet though might not be a good idea.

If you also think that since we know so little about nutrition most of us should revert to eating exclusively meat and vegetables until further research is conducted because we started harvesting grains and potatoes off absolutely no research, then I think your argument is consistent. But otherwise your argument is, "we don't know much, but I like rice and my friends think Soylent is bad for you".

Not knowing much about nutrition doesn't make you unintelligent, but running around implying that something's a bad idea when you don't know what you're talking about is foolish at best and harmful at worst.

surrey-fringe··on Paul Erdős: a life that added up to something (1996)
I've heard this same thing and I just think he was a nerd and that was one of his gags. I don't understand why someone would write about it like it's deeper than that.
surrey-fringe··on Brain training exercises might just make you better at brain training exercises
I don't doubt it, but people shouldn't take this to mean that there aren't any possible exercises to strengthen mental ability. You've just got to listen to people who are actually successful, and not some corporate-funded research that might be null in three years. I don't see anyone at the World Memory Championships citing Lumosity.
