surfsvammel··on Researchers identify largest ever solar storm in 14k-year-old tree rings
We really need to start harden our grid and in all ways prepare for something like this. It will happen again and I suspect we will say: “no one could have predicted it” once it does.
surfsvammel··on Awareness at Death
The brain is a strange thing. Perception and experience is very difficult to wrap one's head around.

I have fainted several times, for different reasons. Often in medical settings but also in other settings. Often when I wake up I am in a state where I feel like I’ve been gone for hours, it feels like I’ve been basically dreaming the equivalent of a full length movie, when in reality I’ve been out for maybe a minute.

It’s strange. It seems impossible to decide what I actually experienced and what I, after the fact, believe I experienced.

I reason about the “life flashes before my eyes” concept similarly. I believe in fact it doesn’t, that a persons brain just makes one believe that has happened, after the fact. But. What do I know.

surfsvammel··on Ask HN: What do you carry in your backpack?
I nowadays only carry my phone and my AirPods. That’s it. No wallet, no keys. I don’t need it.
surfsvammel··on MiniZinc
Forgive my ignorance, but what kinds of problems are constraint solving good for?

Can I specify a list of statements, constraints, prioritisations and the have it solve it for the best possible solution? Is that it? If so, I need it to figure out my optimal workout schedule given a handful of constraints (a problem I’ve been thinking about since I started university twenty years ago :) )

surfsvammel··on Never waste a midlife crisis
I read the book Midlife: A Philosophical Guide by Kieran Setiya. I found it interesting and helpful.

surfsvammel··on Age of universe at 26.7B years, nearly twice as old as previously believed
Ok. I’m a novice in this. But isn’t time relative, and also affected by gravity and velocities? When we talk about the age of the universe, from which perspective are we considering it?
surfsvammel··on OPNsense: Open-source security platform
Been running OPNsense for about four years now, without much hiccups. It’s been more or less a set and forget system to me.

I’ve been running on a small Protectli box and mainly using it for normal firewall stuff, Snort and as a Wireguard server.

surfsvammel··on Russian paramilitary chief says his forces will turn around
Interesting. Something no one (at least in Swedish media) is talking about. But how would that in anyway help Putin?
surfsvammel··on A case for toe socks
Shoes at left at the door, you wash your hands whenever you come in from being outside, or somewhere else, and no clothes that have been outside, in or on the beds. That’s what I teach my kids.
surfsvammel··on In praise of blowing up your life
I spent years examining (also together with my psychologist) the question:

“People always tell you to follow your dream”. But often following one’s dream comes at a cost, or at least comes with some risk. Yet, the advice to “follow your dream” is a blanket advice, it supposedly trumps everything else.

I ended up deciding to not follow my dream, at that point in life, and I am happy I didn’t. I won’t be telling my kids to “follow your dream”. Think about it real good before blowing up your life.

surfsvammel··on I've talked to founders recently who have changed their minds about remote work
The problem, in my opinion, is that many companies tries to do work the same way that they would do it in office, when working remote. I don’t think that work.

The way of working need to change, the way people communicate, how they measure progress, etc.

That is my opinion. I do not believe in going back to commuting to offices like before, I do believe in changing the way we work.

surfsvammel··on Heavy marijuana use increases schizophrenia in men, study finds
Interesting. My dad developed schizophrenia in his twenties and had been smoking a lot of marijuana. I have always wondered if the smoking triggers something in him. I will always wonder.
surfsvammel··on Surviving Burnout (2015)
I suffered burn out about 15 years ago. If you would have asked me back then, if I was feeling stress or was nearing burn out, I would have said no, not a chance. I was feeling great. If you however would have me take one of those self assessment tests, it would show all the red flags.

I guess what I am trying to say is this: don’t necessarily trust your own assessment of the situation. Keep your eyes out for the warning signals.

surfsvammel··on Show HN: Covid in Pixels
Safari on iPhone does not :(
surfsvammel··on Show HN: Covid in Pixels
This is cool, but it’s so overwhelming it’s hard to grasp. I think it would benefit from from like a scroll bar or something to get a sense of the progress (or lack thereof) while scrolling
surfsvammel··on Virtual Threads Arrive in JDK 21, Ushering a New Era of Concurrency
The application that we are working on uses thousands of platform threads today (split over a handful of applicationservers). It’s a humongous banking system. I have been working on performance related improvements for years. I am now curious if these new virtual threads might be beneficial for us in some places. Need to read up on them a bit more
surfsvammel··on Semaphore: A Full-Body Keyboard
Semaphores are also used on shooting ranges.
surfsvammel··on Virtual Threads Arrive in JDK 21, Ushering a New Era of Concurrency
Every time something show up about anything related to Java, the discussions turn to this flame war about what language are better or worse than Java. Why can’t we just discuss the article at hand?

In this case, I’d love to hear more from experienced Java developers, with existing code-bases, who have tested these new virtual threads out.

surfsvammel··on Virtual Threads Arrive in JDK 21, Ushering a New Era of Concurrency
It’s not hard to find people who want to write Java. I do it all the time. We have been hiring and writing Java code for fifteen years and have not seen a decline in the interest.
surfsvammel··on Microsoft to change PrintScreen button to open the Snipping Tool in Windows 11
As long as they don’t change snipping tools other keyboard shortcuts (again) I’m happy.
surfsvammel··on Why did Phreesia share my medical data after I opted out?
It is time to make stricter laws, to enforce existing laws, and to punish those that break the laws.
surfsvammel··on Ask HN: What lesser-known accessories do you use with your computer?
I use one of those desktop whiteboards. Love it. I’m used to use post-it notes all over my desk, but not anymore.

surfsvammel··on Walking 8k Steps Twice a Week Could Prolong Your Life, Study Finds
Doesn’t everyone working with science or medicine (be that research, teaching or journalism) learn that causation≠correlation? I don’t get it.
surfsvammel··on What broke Sweden? Real estate bust exposes big divide
What? Is this really a problem in Sweden, or is it a problem in Stockholm? (Sure, I know some places like Lund has great inflow of high income earners, very little housing, driving prices, but that’s not the norm).

Stockholm has even traditionally been relatively cheaper(relative to salaries) compared to other capitals of Europe.

surfsvammel··on US banks have $620B of unrealized losses on their books
Is this correct? I’m guessing you are taking about the US, right? In the country where I live, those types of properties are normally owned by companies that specialise in owning and letting out spaces.

Often the companies buy property themselves, to use (since rents have been so high in he last decade or so). I don’t think banks are over-represented as owners, at least where I live. But I might be wrong.

Why is it that US banks are owning so much commercial real estate?

surfsvammel··on Bitwarden PINs can be brute-forced
If I am not using a PIN code, need I be worried?
surfsvammel··on UBS agrees to buy Credit Suisse
I thought UBS explicitly said they did not want to buy CS.
surfsvammel··on Build full “product skills” and you'll probably be fine
We tend to overestimate the impact of technological change in the near future, and underestimate it on the more distant future.
surfsvammel··on The magic of traveling alone
I spent years travelling alone for work. I grew bitter. I hated it. I started to hate travelling.

Some years later, I decided that I wanted to be able to enjoy travelling alone. So I did, for 30 days, in France. I made rules for myself:

- Don’t stay in the same city more than two nights.

- Go do all the touristy stuff, eat at all the restaurants, etc, that I would do if I was not alone.

- Speak to people.

It was the best vacation of my life… I have so many stories from those 30 days.

Travelling alone is as hard, uncomfortable or increasingly good, as you yourself let it be.

surfsvammel··on Give babies peanut butter to cut peanut allergies, study says
When my kids were babies, we drove and parked outside the ER. We then game them taste portions of all kinds of food that normally is associated with allergies.

We then waited a while, then drove back home.

We did that twice with a couple of months in between.

Some called us crazy :)
