Wait till there is a REAL data leak. Just your facebook profile data is 1% of the data they have about you. Using the cookies they have all over the internet as well as partnerships with offline pos transaction systems, they know almost anything you do online/offline. So all websites you have ever visited, things you buy online, the sandwich you buy with your credit card in a local store etc etc. Imagine all that being leaked.

Yeah I have been waiting for green card for 15 years. US Masters degree in CS from top-10 university, 6 publications, 100+ citations. Senior staff engineer in top valley company for 6 years, got multiple awards/always top performer. Then started own company(multi-million$ revenue) and created ~10 high-paying jobs in the valley. With the new proposed H1 changes, I will have to leave since H1 extensions are being revoked. Not that I mind, getting bored of the valley - Europe is definitely better in terms of diversity. Also I have seen that the advantage of being physically in the valley is no longer what it was. Everything happens remotely - yes even sales.

And xenophobia is ok - it is a deep human flaw and an artifact of evolution and resource constraints. As smart logical people we should be conscious of our xenophobic biases. Not being aware of that is what leads to things like 1930s Germany.

Also the total number of unemployed people in US is 6.6 million. The number of H1b visas granted every year is 65000 (that's 2 orders of magnitude). If you were put in charge of solving the unemployment problem of USA, would you focus on the 99% bucket or the 1% bucket? So you would agree that the backlash is driven by xenophobia and not any possible rational or data driven argument.

Unfortunately, this is a political issue. Eq the changes proposed in http://www.mcclatchydc.com/news/politics-government/white-ho... will affect more than 10% of current employees at Google, Apple, Microsoft. Note - you cannot just fire these 10% employees and replace them with another warm body.

I agree with you that the abuse is being done by a few companies(some of which are Indian - Infosys/TCS, others American - eq IBM/Accenture, French - Capgemini). However, the "solutions" that have already been executed by the current administration are aimed at appeasing the economically disadvantaged section of American society. The reason for rising unemployment is not foreigners stealing American jobs, it is driven by economic disparity and in some ways an artifact of how technology innovation disproportionately benefits the few. Throw out all 100% H1bs and other foreign workers and it will not move the unemployment index at all.

PS: Reflect on the bias underlying your comment re:Indians. If you actually look at the data, you will see the companies abusing the system are not just Indian, but American, French, European as well.

won't you want to factor by cost of living/geography/state taxes etc? 100k in Austin is very different from 100k in SF. It is quite hard to come up with an actual mathematical formula that can be used. I can sympathize with the law makers who are in charge of actually coming up with a concrete real formula.

Companies like Google, Microsoft, Apple have thousands of job openings and are desperate to hire more talent. They will happily interview anyone(from US, India, China, heck Syria) if the person is qualified. So this is just xenophobia(surprising to see such thinking in comments here on HN). The effect though is that top valley companies have already instituted a policy to stop hiring fresh-grad H1bs to avoid risk.

While so far, places like silicon valley have been unique in being centers of innovation, this will change. Till just a couple decades ago, you literally had to be physically in the office to work on a database server etc. Within a generation or so, the advantage of physically being in silicon valley will be immaterial.

They should at least give an option in settings. What is the algorithm for slowdown? Is it guaranteed to be fixed on replacing the battery or its just a linear decay function based on age of phone.

Hopefully a step in the direction towards cleaning the internet from the blotch of online ads. Make the internet a place to learn again and an open platform where people and businesses can exchange ideas(and data), not the silo'ed short-term profit-mongering mess it has become.

sure - that was not the intention. Fixed. I care deeply about user data privacy and how we have traded privacy(and user experience) for free software. Maybe recent events will change the trade-offs.

Sure - might not be easy for email. It does work for imessages (no server storage, typical size 1-5GB, stored + indexed on client side). So once phones start having 50GB+ storage(wait my iphone already does :p), its not so far fetched to think of having a 20GB inbox stored+indexed on the phone - of course you don't need to store the attachments etc.

Anyways, my point was not to suggest a full solution but to say that companies are not incentivized to solve this problem.

The inverted index could simply be built/live on client side. The cloud is then just a backup data storage. Encrypted email is downloaded, unencrypted and indexed on your laptop/phone etc.

more like the internet will finally be fixed. There is no reason gmail cannot encrypt my email and remove pii data, except that it will eat into advertising revenues. Its easy for companies like Google to take a stand on an easy thing like the government making it a bit harder to get visas, but when it comes to saying no to government requests for your email - they happily comply.

Also to all the people here who are ok with selling their privacy to facebook, google - how do you now feel that a Trump-led government will have 100% access to all your data! It is time that we fix the internet from the menace of the advertising business model - that has not only destroyed the internet but society itself...

The advertising market needs to be made similar to the stock exchange. Current situation is similar to the NYSE asking for a 85% commission on every stock transaction. The middlemen need to be removed...An advertiser should have direct access to the relevant consumer audience with a non-commercial facilitator.

How is that any different to the neighbor seeing you park your car in that street and not seeing the actual killer. Is there a difference in whether this evidence got collected by a person or a camera? What you do with this(and all other collected evidence) comes later. Eq - what if the government hires millions of police and place them on every intersection - that is acceptable, but having a camera on every intersection is not?

This data should ideally be protected and owned by the individuals themselves - not the government, not the ad companies, not Google, not Facebook. As an individual who owns my data, I should have a right to decide who/when/how accesses my data.

More than a question of privacy, this is a question of next-generation user experience. If as an individual, my data from uber, google, facebook, visa, amazon is all in one place I can give selective anonymized access to it to different services that can leverage the collective data to provide better user experiences to me.

Compare these scenarios: 1 a cop is passing by your house and sees you commit a murder. 2 government finds out from your phone's GPS data + public camera face recognition that you committed a murder 3 you admit to a murder on phone with an accomplice

Why is one way of collecting evidence any better than the other. If you commit a crime, you should be convicted. Just because you are able to hide certain types of evidence today does not make the crime justified.

People don't care. It is funny that smart people don't care about tech and ad companies violating their privacy by collecting data and profiting from it. But they have an issue with the government doing it to protect them. Perhaps has something to do with the fact that silicon valley's success is based on the advertising business model and violation of people's privacy.
