sureshv··on BYD overtakes Tesla and Kia as the best-selling EV brand in key overseas markets
I always take these views with a grain of salt, many immigrant's view of their home country is ossified at the time of emigration.
sureshv··on EVs are depreciating faster than gas-powered cars
The Maverick fills that space but has limitations (less towing capacity than a 90's Ranger). I've seen it used by a ton of service folks that need a pickup but not for towing (1500 payload).
sureshv··on Waymo granted permit to begin testing in New York City
Hope this does well but the subway + walking is the way to go. Uber, taxis, etc are way too slow getting around manhattan per my recent trip.
sureshv··on Go is still not good
What makes compilation fast is a good goal at places with large code bases and build times. Maybe makes less sense in smaller startups with a few 100k LOC.
sureshv··on Google Fiber is coming to Las Vegas
Palo Alto has had AT&T fiber since 2019 depending on your location (but still not 100% coverage). I was lucky enough to be in an early coverage area but the price for 1GB symmetric has risen from $75/month to $115.

Google's Total Ad Rev ($238b) is almost double Meta's Ad Revenue ($132b).
sureshv··on Launch HN: Pier (YC W23) – Stripe for Credit
Thanks - so more loan origination/servicing/management as opposed to providing balance sheet lending (ala Canopy/Peach but with your own underwriting/compliance). Since customers need to bring their own credit warehouse/lending partner do you facilitate partner matching?

How are you different than a debt SaaS product like Sivo? Also is there a publicly viewable API?
sureshv··on SwiftData
Looks like a wrapper over core data - was wondering if they made it thread safe.
sureshv··on 1M bartenders have to be certified in California by July 1
California occupational licensing strikes again. Just like the handyman who can’t do jobs > $500 (including materials). There’s a dead spot in that market between $500-$5000 which is the minimum most GCs will do work on.
sureshv··on Harvard, Oxford, Stanford doctors among leaders of global anti-lockdown movement
How much of this is coming from https://www.hoover.org/?
sureshv··on Modern C
The 2nd edition circa 1988 uses ANSI style declarations.
sureshv··on Apple Threatens to Remove App 'Hey' from App Store over No In-App Subscriptions
Apple (via the app store) has never charged for physical goods and services only virtual (bits) - e.g. ebooks, game coins, etc.

Uber, Deliveroo, and Grubhub are not delivering virtual goods.

sureshv··on U.S. states lean toward breaking up Google's ad tech business
The entire mentality of the company changed. IMO it affected every product group across the company.
sureshv··on Unikernels: The Next Stage of Linux’s Dominance (2019)

sureshv··on Airbnb Racks Up Hundreds of Millions in Losses Due to Coronavirus
Who would underwrite that at this moment?

sureshv··on Costco gained a cult following by breaking every rule of retail
Some California Costco’s have outdoor food courts. You can also enter through the standard entrance and tell them you are going to the food court or membership counter. At that point no membership is required to get food.

The membership counter/food court and exit are all next to each other at most Costco’s.

sureshv··on Costco gained a cult following by breaking every rule of retail
Since this is an item I get regularly - it’s $9 for a 4-pack of Kerrygold butter at the Mountain View Costco ($2.25/ 8oz bar). Same 8oz butter is almost double at Safeway or Whole Foods. The local Walmart is $2.83 per bar.

I have rarely found Costco items more expensive than other local stores, at least for my regular items.

I discount Trader Joe’s since they don’t carry branded items other than wine and beer.

sureshv··on Stripe’s new funding round values company at $35B
Visa's underlying fundamentals didn't change due to a recession.
sureshv··on Empress trees absorb about 103 tons of carbon a year per acre
The Janka Hardness is 260-290 which is softer than most soft woods. Seems like that could limit its usage.
sureshv··on Alphabet overtakes Apple to become most cash-rich company
They are taxed as capital gains for recipients.

Edit: *qualified dividends

sureshv··on Apple Special Event Livestream [video]
Fee structure is likely better for Apple when not using the standard visa/mc rail.
sureshv··on Apple announces Apple Card credit card
The apple cash card is basically a prepaid Discover debit card.
sureshv··on WeWork’s CEO Makes Millions as Landlord to WeWork
Who do you think are the LP's in a venture fund?
sureshv··on Taxpayers Should Never Subsidize Stadiums
IIRC the Warriors stadium is privately financed. Not sure if there are any subsidies offered by the city.
sureshv··on Google's 'two-tier' workforce training document
My guess is this goes all the way back to the Microsoft Permatemp case (you could tell by by email a-/v-). The IRS sets the line as to how you can treat temp staff and what benefits they can can get.
sureshv··on [dead]
Yes - just like they've always been.
