supperburg··on First Human Case of Rabies in Illinois Since 1954
That’s hilarious. I think Darwin would disagree though.
supperburg··on The Great AI Reckoning
Imagine every program that fits within 10TB. It’s a finite number of programs. Inside there is GTP-3, 2 and 1. Every GAN. Tesla FSD. It’s everything. What this entire industry is really about at its core is finding programs in that set that behave in intelligent ways. That’s all. Recently we’ve had success in letting the computer dig through programs automatically until it finds a good one. So overnight we went from testing maybe hundreds per year to billions per month or something like that. So obviously things have been getting weird.

Imagine how many we’ve dug up so far out of the total set. It’s an infinitesimal percentage. We haven’t even scratched the surface.

Imagine the set. What’s inside? Is there something inside that we will regret?

Well at that age he would have passed on his genetic material already. The point of the Darwin “award” is to praise genetically unfit people who die before reproducing, thus improving the fitness of the species and pushing evolution forward. So no, he doesn’t get a Darwin Award.

There it is! The one person who actually answers my question!

> If that’s all you are doing, then yeah, that’s probably not profitable because competition would just eat your margins.

So markets don’t exist? Businesses can’t exist in a market? This is economics 101. No wonder everyone is so off

supperburg··on Elizabeth Holmes urged employees to hide Theranos’ lab equipment from inspectors
Wow what a substantive and interesting comment. Thanks

I don’t know if that’s a technical accounting term but “integral” is the key word there. Massive expansion is not integral to the normal operations of a business. R&D and literal billion dollar ad campaigns are tools to expand and grow into whatever space is open from lack of competition. Amazon filled their space, Tesla theirs and one of the computerized taxi companies will fill that space. Until they do, they will spend money on expansion. So that’s the key. It’s a temporary state. “Integral” is a completely incorrect term for the cost of that growth. The viability of a business is based on how much it costs them to actually carry out their core business.

And maybe Uber has already gotten as big as they will get. It doesn’t change the fact that they don’t need one billion dollars in advertising. And also, what you are asserting is that it’s impossible for a computerized taxi company to exist. So do you think it would be cheaper to have a human dispatcher? Obviously you can run a profitable taxi company. It’s been a thing for a long time and the computers aren’t making it any worse or more expensive I can assure you.

Right, but would they be profitable if you took out the advertising and expansion costs? From the document I saw, yes. Can you please explain where are these enormous costs that are necessary to run the business? Is it SV salaries? Are their servers costing too much money? It doesn’t make sense. It’s like saying that the concept of dispatching taxis with a computer is not capable of being profitable. It simply isn’t true. It’s like people who said Amazon and Tesla were vapor ware because they were unprofitable. Everyone in the media and most people on HN couldn’t fathom the concept of subtracting R&D.
supperburg··on YouTube is banning anti-vaccine activists and blocking all anti-vaccine content
Can you explain why? Do the unvaccinated not occupy more hospital beds?
supperburg··on Elizabeth Holmes urged employees to hide Theranos’ lab equipment from inspectors
The idea that Uber is not profitable is a myth isn’t it? I remember they posted some financial documents a while back that showed them in the red. But when I looked at the papers there were literal billions in advertising and expansion.

Uber runs the app. People call an Uber and they pay money. Some of that money goes to the driver and some goes to Uber. You’re really saying that Uber can’t collect enough money to run their computers and pay some staff? It just doesn’t make sense. Of course they can.

Never ever forget that anyone who said Holmes was a fraud was screamed down by accusations of sexism and toxic masculinity.

Because they clog up the hospitals. In Singapore if you opt out of donating your organs after death then you also opt out of receiving organs. It’s just a sensible way of allowing people who really have a principled stance on an issue to do what they want while not being a burden on the rest of us.
supperburg··on YouTube is banning anti-vaccine activists and blocking all anti-vaccine content
I had to wait for 7 hours at the ER last night. People who choose to not vaccinate shouldn’t be allowed entry to the hospital.

By far the biggest gamble here for the UK is the political stability of Morocco. Why would they use a DC cable?
supperburg··on IMGZ – Paid image sharing
Yes! Definitely don’t upload any pictures of your young daughter taking a bath or of your own body if you are a teenager. Those are evil and hurt people.

Yeah but then you’re supporting Apple and google and also certainly being spied on and putting yourself at risk of being flagged as a pedophile.
supperburg··on The Unbelievable Grimness of HermanCainAward Subreddit
I was disgusted but not surprised when I learned about the HCA subreddit. It’s petty, brutish and childish. It reminds me of when Bin Laden was killed in 2011 and they televised a stadium full of Americans cheering and celebrating. I thought it was unbecoming of a nation to cheer someone’s death no matter how justified. And my opinion hasn’t changed.
supperburg··on Europe’s energy crisis is about to go global as gas prices soar
Poor people also were against EVs before they went mainstream, so does that count for anything? I would evangelize Tesla and EVs in general in 2010 and the overwhelming majority of people who thought that EVs were “dumb” were poor and lower class. A poor person has the exact same opportunity as a rich person to say the words “that makes sense, let’s try it.”
supperburg··on What John von Neumann Did at Los Alamos
Is it easy? You have to spin the tube at 50k rpm and flow a gaseous form of uranium through it. It’s dangerous and expensive and certainly hard if you’ve never built a centrifuge before.
supperburg··on Lockdown, distance learning likely to increase social class achievement gap
This is already how it works. The people have control over public schools. They elect the officials who oversee it. If everybody wanted public schools to do X, public schools would do X and there wouldn’t be anything anyone could do about it. We can amend the fucking constitution. The problem isn’t a lack of power for the people, it’s that people collectively aren’t very smart. There’s no civil solution to that.

Because you are intellectually dishonest! If that’s what you would do in the 90s then you would be completely alone! And griz peak is literally nothing like the Berkeley hills.

Do we? I haven’t seen a single interventional study about that.
supperburg··on Does low cholesterol cause cognitive impairment? Part II
Is a randomized interventional study cited in the article? If not, then nothing has been proven. And that’s not accounting for the fact that statins do a hell of a lot more than just lower cholesterol.

supperburg··on San Francisco raises Tesla 'self-driving' safety concerns as public test nears
It wouldn’t matter if the training computer were on the moon. Training data is collected by Tesla owners all across the country including the Eastern United States. Regardless of how well you think it can drive, it can drive equally well in New England as it can in California. And there may be an unequal number of Tesla’s on each coast but that’s irrelevant.
supperburg··on San Francisco raises Tesla 'self-driving' safety concerns as public test nears
If you are worried about people’s safety then why don’t you stand in the back of a bar at closing and try to stop a few people in the mob of drunk people drunkenly stumbling into their cars? You would save more lives that way than protesting self driving. Do any of the Tesla detractors take any action about or even comment about the tens of thousands of deaths caused by people craning over their phones, doing their makeup or intoxication? No, because tesla alarmism is not a rational position and it is not based in objective assessment of public safety.

I’m so tired of the media and the mob taking these select issues out of context. The media plasters FSD accidents across every screen in the world, even when later it turns out the driver was drunk, but it doesn’t mention the zillion miles of uneventful riding. You see clips of FSD doing something weird, “diving toward pedestrians,” shooting straight to the top of reddit/HN (is there any distinction nowadays?) but videos of FSD doing amazing things, negotiating the Berkeley hills without intervention, never reach the front page.

If you showed a person from the 90s two hours of v10 FSD in various environments, mistakes and interventions and all, that person would say with astonishment “that car basically drives itself.” And anyone who denies that is being intellectually dishonest.

supperburg··on San Francisco raises Tesla 'self-driving' safety concerns as public test nears
You think because the computer is in California that it only knows how to drive in California? Maybe you should learn the first thing about something before spreading FUD about it?
supperburg··on The implications of low cholesterol in depression and suicide (2015)
There are numerous examples of people with elevated LDL for years who have zero CAC or no cardiac symptoms. It’s easier to disprove something I admit.

I am still in the process of becoming learned. Eventually I will finish biochemistry, read all the relevant studies and truly get to the bottom of it in a way that is convincing. So even if I am wrong and spreading wrong information I will have a positive contribution in the long term. But I am being intellectually honest always.
