supersystem··on Girls and Software
I don't think anyone, regardless of gender, should be forced to "fit in with mainstream hacker culture".
supersystem··on Why Programming is Difficult
I see programming mostly as janitorial work. Why? Because it's mostly complex rather than hard. Of course "real programmers" are upset with RoR jockeys when it turns out businesses pay for delivered value rather than technical complexity.
supersystem··on Why I Gave Up My Front-Row Seat in Silicon Valley
I'm not sure Singapore and Israel are the best choices when it comes to escape the bubble and focus on what's really important.

supersystem··on “We Just Can’t Have You Here”
It's not surprising that you manages to justify abuse of power, people in power always do.
supersystem··on Startup developing HIV/AIDS vaccine is 2nd nonprofit accepted into Y Combinator
God forbid the people doing the actual work would get the credit.
supersystem··on Linda Liukas' Programming book for Children has Huge First Day on Kickstarter
"Just not sure why the gender comment was necessary."

I said nothing about gender nor did I intend to, that was your assumption.

supersystem··on Linda Liukas' Programming book for Children has Huge First Day on Kickstarter
Also this is a good example of why we should have diversity in the first place.
supersystem··on Buses for Tech Workers in San Francisco Will Pay Fee
"The controversy penalty can have a sudden and catastrophic effect on an article's ranking, causing an article to be ranked highly one minute and vanish when it hits 40 comments. If you've wondered why a popular article suddenly vanishes from the front page, controversy is a likely cause. "

supersystem··on Announcing the Female Founders Conference (March 1)
"There are some things that women just don't get about men"

Seems more like you don't really get what it means to be a man.

supersystem··on She's a beauty and a geek: Supermodel is a coder

supersystem··on She's a beauty and a geek: Supermodel is a coder
I don't think quoting one thing from the article out of context is "disagree and rather than derail the discussion" as you say in your other comment.
supersystem··on San Francisco Is Eating Itself
I did.

"replacing each bus with twenty cars"

You assume that either is this solution or no solution, which isn't necessarily true. In fact I would argue that this proprietary solution makes other solutions less viable. Both from a political and economic standpoint, with less pressure on the government and less usage for any public solution.

supersystem··on San Francisco Is Eating Itself
Rent control is one of the tools, I've never said anything about it in relation to SF. I'd like to see anyone argue that rent control doesn't work as a price ceiling for the rent controlled units.
supersystem··on San Francisco Is Eating Itself
I don't have time to do this largr discussion justice, but if you can't tell I think value associated with stable, and preferably cheap, housing is important enough to protect. Regardless if it's preventing a housing market crash, having rent control or forcing increased development.
supersystem··on San Francisco Is Eating Itself
I'm not sure that's the core of the issue so much as disappointment over the tech companies preserving the status quo making it easy for those in power to avoid the issues.
supersystem··on San Francisco Is Eating Itself
I don't see how the "money should trump everything" argument is less entitled. Of course I'll think this will change if the fortunate side becomes reserved for the very fortunate, like has happened in some other cities.
supersystem··on Forget Setting Goals. Focus on Systems Instead
"Hacking" largely used to be about systems, including the arbitrariness of them. I guess it's become more focused on "being very good at a single thing". I think you can still see the dependency between the two by the way others view "hackers" and how "hackers" view themselves.
supersystem··on Latest Perk on Google Buses: Security Guards
You act like there's some significant difference between moving money around for a large corporation and moving data around for another large corporation.

How can you understand what's valuable in tech if you can't even understand what's valuable in life. Having your parents being forced to move so you can't see them when they get old, putting off having kids until you might not be able to or giving up the job you love because you got sick. This isn't your opinion on Facebook vs. Snapchat, it's real life shit. One of the great things about being a geek was that you didn't have to blatantly accept society's stupidity. I guess no one could really foresee the magnitude of eternal september.

It's not like there is a lack of opportunities outside of SV, every techie went there by their own choice. If they can't handle having their ride to work disrupted once in a while, maybe it's time to leave when there's still some dignity left. But hey I guess there's some online petition they can all sign, I heard it worked great in regards to the Snowden revelation. Happy fucking brogramming.

supersystem··on Hackers? Techies? What To Call San Francisco's Newcomers
Uhm? There's plenty of people on HN that look down on people in tech who aren't "(real) programmers".
supersystem··on Latest Perk on Google Buses: Security Guards
Why would companies that are so afraid of competition that they buy their aspiring rivals for billions willingly give up such a strategic advantage?
supersystem··on Netflix picks up an Oscar nomination for “The Square”, a documentary
"It will premiere on Netflix tomorrow (January 17)"
supersystem··on Netflix picks up an Oscar nomination for “The Square”, a documentary
As far as I know they don't actually produce shows, which might even have something to do why they are critically acclaimed.

"The money went not only to the talent involved but to the look and feel of the show which is much more cinematic than most things you’ll watch on TV. That’s because MRC, the production company behind House of Cards, insisted that Fincher and his crew be given final cut — something that is virtually unheard of in the world of TV where everything is produced by committee."

supersystem··on Netflix picks up an Oscar nomination for “The Square”, a documentary
This might actually hinder 'mass consumption' in Europe if Netflix decides it doesn't want to license broadcasting rights to public broadcasting, which often have their own online services. I think we should be at least somewhat skeptical of the rights-holder also controlling distribution channels.
supersystem··on Obama’s Path From Critic to Overseer of Spying
Just seems like a worse version of http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2013/12/16/131216fa_fact_...

By the way if your getting most of your updates on this subject from HN, you're most likely out of the loop. Since a lot of the insightful content doesn't make it. IIRC there's even a penalty on this subject on HN.

supersystem··on Super successful companies
I'm not sure down-voting is good way to handle criticism about not being able to express oneself.
supersystem··on Same word. Different places? Different meanings
Ask Noam Chomsky ;)

This is largely about the difference between the connotation and denotation of words.

supersystem··on You can use Facebook to identify people by their email or phone number
No, personally identifiable information isn't public information. What's exposed here is still personal information that you decided to make public, but presumably with the users consent.
supersystem··on Super successful companies
"[...] well-thought-out points of disagreement with Sam's arguments."

I see mostly opinions, not arguments. An argument is generally what follows if you ask someone "why?".

supersystem··on Super successful companies
I'm kind of tired of people in tech who are "misunderstood". Maybe they just aren't very good at expressing themselves or doesn't have the experience they think they have. Sometimes people can of course be be argumentative to the point of hypercriticism, but saying it's because they "misunderstood" is belittling.
