supernes··on Peerweb: Decentralized website hosting via WebTorrent
Is the tracker down? Can't open the demos...
supernes··on YouTube blocks background video playback on Brave and other browsers
It's only a matter of time before the entire YouTube catalog transitions to DRM-encrypted video that you can only watch on Google-sanctioned devices. They're probably doing the math on how to make the platform at least as profitable with a drastically lower DAU count, since alienating users now seems to be their top priority.
supernes··on Antirender: remove the glossy shine on architectural renderings
Alternative branding idea: eastern-europify.ai
supernes··on Apple to soon take up to 30% cut from all Patreon creators in iOS app
How long until they make the argument that they're entitled to 30% of your salary because you use Apple hardware to do your work?
supernes··on Android’s desktop interface leaks
Any extensions that do something really "interesting" will be disallowed, cf. Manifest V3.
supernes··on Make.ts
Yes, it's another dependency (dax). The example with console.log is just that, an example. Standard dependency management practices apply, e.g. pinning a version/commit hash.
supernes··on Make.ts
You can make it more explicit by renaming the import to something like "shell_exec". Tagged templates are already pretty common in TS projects for things like gql or sql queries.
supernes··on House of Lords Votes to Ban UK Children from Using Internet VPNs
Papers, please. Glory to Arstotzka!
supernes··on Apple, What Have You Done?
> Do Apple staff even use their products anymore, or are they all secretly harbouring Android devices?

I've been asking myself the same for a couple of years now.

Assuming Tim Apple uses an iPhone, does he just throw it in the garbage and pull out a fresh one every time the battery reaches 20%? Is no one at Apple irked by the low battery notification modal that blocks all interactions until you dismiss it, the same way it has for 19 freaking years now? It even covers the PIN entry form and makes the device unusable. I honestly think it's more reasonable to assume they're all on Android.

supernes··on What has Docker become?
Podman supports Compose files, so there's that. I've only glimpsed at Quadlets and I agree they seem very esoteric, especially if you're not very well versed in systemd service definitions.
supernes··on It looks like the status/need-triage label was removed
Finally an example of AI doing something useful. Imagine having to add and remove all those tags 4500+ times by hand!
supernes··on Why are websites trying to talk at me?
I examined that Dell link and speech synthesis is used in the "Virtual Assistant" on-page chat widget. There's a feature check to see if it's available so it shouldn't trigger the way it does for you, that may be a browser issue.
supernes··on Cloudflare acquires Astro
I'm not jumping off Astro yet, but if I did I would probably go to Vike (https://vike.dev/)
supernes··on Garage – An S3 object store so reliable you can run it outside datacenters
I tried it recently. Uploaded around 300 documents (1GB) and then went to delete them. Maybe my client was buggy, because the S3 service inside the container crashed and couldn't recover - I had to restart it. It's a really cool project, but I wouldn't really call it "reliable" from my experience.
supernes··on Apple is forcing iPhones to update to iOS 26 to patch security holes
> Several users have reported to me that a workaround is to sign up for Apple’s public beta program and opt in to the iOS 18 public beta track, at which point you’ll be offered 18.7.3.

Thanks for that, just enrolled at downloading the update now.

supernes··on South Korea to mandate facial recognition for opening new mobile numbers
> By comparing the photo on an identification card with the holder's actual face on a real-time basis, we can fully prevent the activation of phones registered under a false name using stolen or fabricated IDs.

Don't employees at the POS already check the customer's ID by comparing their face to the ID photo "on a real-time basis" using their eyes? What am I missing?

supernes··on JSDoc is TypeScript
> You can still use JSDoc in your typescript files, but why do you want to do that?

JSDoc is more than type annotations. I use it for method and parameter descriptions, deprecation notices, inline examples, etc even in TS files.

supernes··on Code Wiki: Accelerating your code understanding
The only thing this will achieve is making accurate, reliable information harder to find once the garbage it generates gets ingested by the other models.
supernes··on WebGPU Benchmark: 15M Moving Nodes in Browser
Tested it on a RX 7800XT on Chromium 142 (Windows) and it maintains 60fps up to ~6M nodes, very impressive.
supernes··on Ask HN: Am I the only one not using AI?
Every single time I try to use it for research or learning it ends up spitting subtly invalid code. Results range from imaginary APIs that don't exist to straight up invalid syntax, not to mention outdated info, contradictory reasoning and flat out wrong explanations.

Maybe spending $200/mo or whatever to access the top-of-the-line models will mitigate some of that, but I'd rather come up with the solution and gain the understanding myself, then spend the money on something worthwile.

supernes··on Apple M5 chip
They'll put it in the Mini when they push out a new Studio to upsell to.
supernes··on Bravo Apple! Calculator app has a memory leak
Apple can save some memory by rewriting it as an Electron app.
supernes··on Stitch: Design at the Speed of AI
This is amazingly bad at following instructions. It ignores most of the follow-up prompts, doesn't understand page structure semantics, and the generated results have really bad accessibility. It's almost like it spits out a couple of templates and then fails to customize them. Absolutely useless.
supernes··on Sid Meier's Civilization VII
Verdict is that core gameplay is a big improvement and a lot of fun, but the UI gets in the way too much. High price and questionable DRM make this a "wait for sale", maybe after some expansions/DLCs land or at least after the first patch next month.
supernes··on Show HN: Dut – a fast Linux disk usage calculator
I think they're reading some of the info from Spotlight metadata already collected by the OS for indexing, but I could be wrong.
supernes··on PcTattletale leaks victims' screen recordings to entire Internet
What a wild story. From one of the linked reports:

> it took Fleming over 20 hours to take the defaced website offline, but the long time was not for lack of trying: his own spyware recorded him clumsily attempting to restore the site fairly early on but ultimately failing to do so. while pcTattletale itself has now been entirely down for a few hours, the sending of screenshots to the s3 bucket continued until Flemings aws account was locked down by amazon shortly before publishing this article.

supernes··on Google's AI Overviews are out of control
A Google spokesperson added: "Only a very small portion of Google Search users have sustained grave injury or death as a direct result of using information returned by the AI Overview feature. We believe that the minor convenience provided by the service far outweighs the occasional loss of life that may occur."
supernes··on MuPDF WASM Viewer Demo
This WASM "demo" is literally the only viewer on Windows I've found that can handle documents like the Baldur's Gate 3 Artbook (around 300MB of high-res artworks in PDF format). Native and browser-based viewers all choke even on a decent system with lots of memory.
supernes··on PHP in 2024
Hot Module Replacement and Live Reload in Node-based web dev servers bring some of that magic feeling back, although you will quickly need to learn about module resolution and other intricacies.
supernes··on Spotify demonetizes all tracks under 1k streams
I'm inclined to believe that filling the service with an endless stream of generated garbage is their ultimate endgame - why bother with unreliable and costly human creators when you can just emulate them well enough for undiscerning listeners. No substance, just vibes.
