supercheetah··on EV sales soar in main European markets as drivers shun expensive petrol
You should reread their post. You're proving their point.
supercheetah··on X-ray: a Python library for finding bad redactions in PDF documents
FWIW, a lot of of the victims (possibly all) are saying they don't care about redactions if they end up being used to protect perpetrators. They want to make sure everyone is held accountable.
supercheetah··on Fedora: Open-source repository for long-term digital preservation
Red Hat is the bigger party here. Their minimization of this issue seems a little like bullying.
supercheetah··on Millions of Americans mess up their taxes, but a new law will help
> It's to H&R Block's benefit to make you feel that taxes are stressful and you need 3rd party help, though. That you were stressed out about this interaction is H&R's fault; not the law or the IRS.

H&R has lobbyists to ensure taxes are complicated and stressful.

Have you checked out Gambas[1]?

supercheetah··on DOOM CAPTCHA
Kinda awkward to use on the toilet.
supercheetah··on Mozilla has fired their Chief Product Officer after cancer diagnosis
You're still contributing to the Chromium monoculture, though.
supercheetah··on Linux: We need tiling desktop environments
I would say those aren't really desktop environments. They provide the bare minimum for window management and compositing, but not much more. Desktop environments encompass much more than that, like managing file type associations, and protocol handling.
supercheetah··on Show HN: Keydogger – Minimal keyboard macro for Linux (Wayland)
I've been using Ydotool[1] for this, and it works really well.

supercheetah··on Libadwaita: Splitting GTK and Design Language
They take some aesthetic inspiration from Gnome, but Cosmic inherits none of its code since it's being written in Rust.
supercheetah··on Tmux is worse-is-better
Byobu just works on top of either screen or tmux. By default it will try to use screen, but you can force it to use tmux with byobu-tmux.
supercheetah··on Helldivers 2 PSN account linking update will not be moving forward
That's a risk developers take by signing with a publisher.
supercheetah··on Lithium-free sodium batteries exit the lab and enter US production
Two minutes is about the amount of time it takes to fill my ICE car, so yeah, that'd be nice.
supercheetah··on New startup sells coffee through SSH
I think you mean M-w and C-y.
supercheetah··on FTC announces rule banning noncompetes

supercheetah··on Pentagon ex-UFO chief says conspiracy theorists in government drive spending
No one here is saying that. What so many are saying is that we're just not that interesting. Any highly advanced technological species that can build spaceships that can cross the vastness of space isn't going to take anything more than a passing interest, if even that, in a species that can't even get out of its own solar system.
supercheetah··on Waymo outperforms comparable human benchmarks over 7M+ miles
I can see a possible future where the are less cars because people don't feel the need to own one, and are just fine with calling an autonomous cab.
supercheetah··on California moves to decriminalize use of magic mushrooms, other psychedelics
This isn't legalization. It's just decriminalization. There's a big difference. People can still be fined for their use if there isn't a medical reason, but they won't go to jail or prison.
supercheetah··on A new method to reprogram human cells to better mimic embryonic stem cells
Not all heart disease happens due to lifestyle choices. There aren't a lot of preventative treatment options for people who have a family history of heart disease.
supercheetah··on A table that looks good on mobile and desktop
I'm not sure what mobile you're using, but on Firefox Mobile on Android, if I rotate it to landscape, the tables turn into regular tables like in desktop mode, but I didn't have to change to desktop mode.
supercheetah··on California spent $17B on homelessness – it’s not working
Can you cite any studies on that?
supercheetah··on US jet shoots down unknown object flying off Alaska coast
No such comparison was being made. The issue is whether or not the US or Chinese government affect our lives more, and since there's no danger of China trying to invade the US anytime soon, it's obviously the former. The Chinese don't care about watching the average person.
supercheetah··on Tell HN: DEI initiatives undermine the self esteem of PoC within a company
Your description of intersectionality is the exact opposite of what it is. It's entire purpose is to show everyone that playing the operation Olympics is a pointless game that no one wins. It's too show that everyone's struggles don't fit into neat little boxes that define them, and show that social problems are multidimensional that don't have simple solutions, and shows that a lot of DEI initiatives are superficial, and likely won't make any real difference.
supercheetah··on Ask HN: Share your favorite YouTube channels focused on mastering a skill/craft
I'm too old to switch careers, but for anyone interested in architecture, I recommend Dami Lee. She obviously can't cover everything, but I think it should give anyone interested an idea of what to expect if they decide to go to school for it.

supercheetah··on Gattaca is still pertinent 25 years later
I always took that as a hyperbole, and not something to be taken literally, and a foreshadowing of him showing them up on that point.
supercheetah··on 7.8 magnitude earthquake hits Turkiye
It did make it confusing though. For a long time as a kid, I always wondered why I never heard native Japanese speakers say "Japan" unless they were speaking English. While I couldn't understand it, I could somewhere reasonably sometimes hear words where I've seen it's romanization, but not ever hearing "Japan" was quite baffling for a long time.
supercheetah··on As a US Navy fighter pilot, I witnessed unidentified anomalous phenomena
Trying to rename UFOs to UAPs seems like a waste of effort to me. I don't think anyone that's already convinced they're made by aliens are suddenly going to be convinced that they're not.

If anything, this will fuel their speculations of cover ups, and they'll probably even think this name change was ordered by little green men.

I don't think anyone getting emails and letters about this stuff are going to see a drop in their volume about this stuff.

supercheetah··on Math breakdown: Anime homing missiles
It's not a bad idea. It's just a practical reality of their interaction with each other that causes a problem that's hard to workaround.
supercheetah··on Stop the proposal on mass surveillance of the EU
> There are darker things down the path of eroding our protections from our government than whatever evil they’re asking us to yield for.

I agree with you, but this illustrates part of the problem of our messaging. These policies are still just tools which don't have an inherent moral value. The evil comes from their abuse on a mass scale, and the huge temptation to abuse them, with the emphasis on how easily the powerful can be corrupted.

This is prone to being called out for being a slippery slope fallacy, but we need to just back it up with historical precedent, like how similar policies were abused in the US as revealed by Snowden.
