suneilp··on Human behavioral complexity peaks at age 25: study
From personal experience I'd say it can relate to mental illnesses caused by trauma, hostile environments, etc.

Getting over trauma and other emotional baggage has resulted in large improvements in sustained focus, lower inhibitions, and general cognitive improvements for me and I'm well past the age of 25.

suneilp··on Spotify’s Beta Used ‘Pirate’ MP3 Files, Some from Pirate Bay
So now every ordinary person is going to read academic papers to ensure that a service or product meets decent moral and ethical standards?

If it wasn't on their website designed for selling, then they don't really have an excuse. That is the spot where those kind of details should be mentioned.

suneilp··on U.S. life expectancy varies by more than 20 years from county to county
It's called sensationalism. Thanks for pointing it out. Really dislike that kind of bs.
suneilp··on Don’t Let Facebook Make You Miserable
I turned off all Facebook email notifications and I'm much happier with it now.
suneilp··on Shaming Children So Parents Will Pay the School Lunch Bill
Thats a good point, I'm appalled that if they feel compelled to crack down on delinquent bill payers to the point they resort to these measures but can't look into other ways to save money.

What are their priorities in life?

suneilp··on The psychological importance of wasting time
Some good ones are you're saving money for whatever reason. Or you're trying to eat healthier and can't eat out as much.
suneilp··on Evidence-based advice we've found on how to be successful in a job
I like this article, yet, there is this obsession with evidence that I can't quite pinpoint and it bugs me.
suneilp··on Uber gets sued over alleged ‘Hell’ program to track Lyft drivers
According to some comments, the api isn't even public. This behavior is quite thuggish of a digital sorts.

I once heard from an Uber driver that the CEOs of the two companies hated each other and have gone crazy competing against each other.

Either it's over a woman or they're really messed up in the head. Regardless, this is very disappointing.

suneilp··on FedEx will give you $5 to reinstall Flash
Those are probably ancient corporate tools, either made in-house or by some 3rd party that won't update to newer technology without enough of a monetary incentive.
suneilp··on Most Electronics Being Banned on Certain US-Bound Flights
This started before 2000. I'd say we were going in a good directios .

Then someone had the idea to treat corporations as people and legalize bribery. Leadership sets the tone as they say in corporations, so what kind of tone do greedy politicians set?

Our upward progress was doomed to stall bigly thanks to that decision.

suneilp··on Like startups, most intentional communities fail. Why?
Many people lack, or don't have enough of, the ability to deal with conflicts, emotions, unexpected outcomes, etc. Not to say that these things are always easy to deal with for anyone.

Advancement is also an infuriating process. Either there isn't enough opportunity to learn or develop the skills to advance, or the requirements to get someone or some organization to invest in you is difficult to obtain for a lot of people.

The maddening pursuit of self-interest makes people more discriminating in who to support and build up.

The way a lot of people put down others often tends to be very toxic and not everyone who is on the receiving end knows how to deal with that.

We definitely haven't tried everything possible to "get along". One thing for sure is that there is definitely advancement in this area led by thought leaders blogging and new trends such as the recent "triggered" and "safe space", the typical criticism by assholes like calling them "snowflakes", etc. And then someone will realize some new idea and the cycle will begin.

There is clearly a large amount of people who are deaf to these things, or perhaps it does reach them, just very slowly.

Education is so very important and yet we're gutting it here in America. I'd like to see more emphasis placed on teaching kids (and adults) how to deal with conflict with people and within themselves.

suneilp··on How can a programmer help The New York Times report stories?
What does "You know how to meet deadlines creatively and collaboratively." mean? Mostly the creatively part is what piqued my interest.
suneilp··on How Japan has almost eradicated gun crime
Those conviction rates are due to how they ignore the rights of defendants as you said and also how they browbeat suspects into confessing to doing something they didn't do. The accounts of that browbeating I've read/watched about are inhumane.

Their society has aspects to it that are suppressive and don't tolerate younger people questioning older people.

Violence through other means like knives seems to be increasing (correct me on that if I'm wrong).

The work hours they put force employees to go through is apparently taking it's toll on their society.

I'm predicting we'll see more issues in their society. I'd be glad to be wrong but they do have social issues to take care of just like most other countries.

suneilp··on Taking PHP Seriously
Starting new, regardless of caching data/bytecode, still means you have to spend time bootstrapping the application.

Other languages, whether directly or indirectly manage cleanup via GC or recycle processes, like UWSGI for Python.

I also don't find any particular benefits over other languages with "reasoning about". As a PHP application grows and a team restructures it into something more mature it ends up looking the same minus the event loop (which just lives somewhere else).

suneilp··on Backpage Raided, CEO Arrested on Sex-Trafficking Charges
This sounds more like a moral judgement. Labor is labor, you don't get to redefine labor just because it involves an action which is very controversial.

What really matters is the safety of the person(s) involved. And yet, there are plenty of occupations where safety is in question.

suneilp··on Jawbone stops production of fitness trackers
Apparently, that number doesn't have any real research behind it to begin with. What's being questioned is the seemingly arbitrary number itself, not the concepts, as far as I can tell.

Of course getting out and walking is good for your health. Keep it up!

suneilp··on Scaling to 100M: MySQL Is a Better NoSQL
Couchdb isn't exactly the best thing to judge NoSQL by today especially by it's old performance issues, lack of automatic compaction, indexing on demand instead of proactive background indexing, etc.
suneilp··on For some, meditation has become more curse than cure
Whole heartedly agree. In my experience, meditation is a tool, not a cure-all. When I started getting into meditation, yoga, etc. I did a couple of legit non-new agey satsangs which is something like a chanting meditation type thing. Those were very deep, moving experiences, yet I felt extremely depressed after each one.

Some things can be too fast and unlock too much at once. This is where regular, consistent, meditation helps quell the unrest and let you tackle things at a sane pace. I had to work through those bouts of heavy depression, but now I can do very spiritual events and benefit from them.

suneilp··on Docker for Mac Beta Review
I'd like to get bumped to the top. Currently researching docker for my company and having it work natively on mac would be awesome. My docker id is suneilp

Thanks.

suneilp··on “Adobe is aware of a report that CVE-2016-1010 is being actively exploited”
Is there a site which lists details of these CVE security issues? The closest thing I could find via google is cve.mitre.org but CVE-2016-1010 is "reserved" for future usage.
suneilp··on GitKraken: git GUI Client for Windows Mac and Linux
I'd like to see it honor the settings defined in ~/.ssh/config . Currently you can only choose one key in the settings which doesn't work so well if you have both github and bitbucket repos to manage let alone repos from 2 github and 1 bitbucket accounts.
suneilp··on The peril of talking to normal people
I'd say this story is the peril of talking to people who prefer to err on the safe side. Feel free to read deeply into that.
suneilp··on The peril of talking to normal people
Does that open up the possibility of suing the psychiatrist.
suneilp··on How Meditation Changes the Brain and Body
Meditation comes in stages, first you aim to "not think". Then you realize that's not actually possible and have to get past a wall of frustration.

Then you learn to just peacefully keep trying. Thats when you get to start letting go of your pent up mental baggage.

Now that you feel reasonably lighter. You can concentrate more easily and maintain a calm mind while deliberately thinking about specific topics. After you shed that baggage that built up from the last time you meditated.

suneilp··on Why Apple Is Right to Challenge an Order to Help the F.B.I
Precedents are a cop out for critical thinking. Sure, they seem to have their uses, like when it guarantees victory for the righteous. However, it seems more likely it's being used as a 'they did it, so can we!' excuse.

It's one thing if you use it as a starting point for discourse, it's another when you use it to beat down the opposition with what amounts to childish antics dressed up in a suit and tie.

suneilp··on Chart Shows Who Marries CEOs, Doctors, Chefs and Janitors
Changing the font color to black helps usability a lot. Just enter this snippet in the url bar

javascript:jQuery('.job-text').css('color', 'black');

With chrome, you might have to re-enter the 'javascript:' part.

suneilp··on Chart Shows Who Marries CEOs, Doctors, Chefs and Janitors
On my mac using Chrome, if I pinch zoom I can see the text and scroll around for what I want, then pinch zoom out and don't move the pointer.
suneilp··on Dead Men Write No Code
For my fellow hypochondriacs, DVT like symptoms in the leg can also be caused by issues with the glutes or piriformis (piriformis syndrome).

Of course, I'm not saying to be not worried because I certainly was freaking out when I googled my DVT-like symptoms. However, many symptoms tends to lead you the the scariest medical conditions that have those symptoms.

Nonetheless, eat better and move your body more often.

suneilp··on A Requiem for Ian Murdock
I get the point about belonging but your comment reeks of dehumanization.

Join us or else....

That kind of attitude creates and/or enforces much of the negativity in this world such as the actions of cops alleged by Ian Murdock.

suneilp··on If Doctors Learned to Cook, They Might Give Better Advice
It's not that people don't realize that proper nutrition is important. They don't want to give up their lifestyle of eating out at every trending restaurant or indulging in something not so good for you.

Stuff you shouldn't eat too much tends stimulate the release of mood altering hormones leading to an addiction.

After one or two decades of processed foods, people no longer know what to eat.

My doctor prescribes foods and it works really well. I'm really glad to see the industry is beginning to change.
