sumuyuda··on C++ is an absolute blast
I did C and C++, then moved on to Objective-C and Swift. I recently switched back to C++, after getting tired of Apple’s shit treatment of developers. I also have no interest in learning SwiftUI.

Having to define header files in C++ is pretty annoying after doing Swift for many years.

sumuyuda··on C++ is an absolute blast
I’m not for sure auto is an improvement. I know it is required for lambdas and it makes it easier to type out a very verbose type, but it really does reduce code readability.

I’ve even seen developers use it instead of bool, which is pretty laughable as the they are the same number of characters.

sumuyuda··on New Google Sheet on half of 13.6" MacBook Air screen is fully covered by popups
The minimum tap bounds for a button in the Apple Human Interface guidelines is 44x44 points. So the developer must of not followed those guidelines. The size of the screen shouldn’t have an impact on this.

sumuyuda··on macOS 15.2 breaks the ability to copy the OS to another drive
I haven’t updated to 15, but I thought they just removed the ability to run unsigned software by right clicking and selecting open. My understanding was you had to manually approve it in the system settings via Gatekeeper?

Apple is 100% slowly boiling the frog in respect to locking down macOS to be like iOS. I already switched to Linux on my personal machines. I saw the writing on the wall when notarization was announced in 2017.

sumuyuda··on Forced to Upgrade
Still rocking an iPhone 7. I’ve encountered a few apps that have dropped iOS 15, but surprisingly not that many.

I feel the same way the author does. With a new battery the phone works fairly well and I don’t need to upgrade.

With the exception of the SE models, all newer models are too big, have a notch, and Face ID. There’s just no compelling reason to upgrade other than being forced by the company.

sumuyuda··on The end of ChromeOS is a new dawn for cheap Android laptops
Does anyone want to run Android mobile apps on a laptop?

I never once ran an iOS app on macOS as the UI/UX makes no sense even though it is possible.

sumuyuda··on I converted a Macbook into a PC
I was also running mint on a 2011 MacBook Pro. I bought it new in 2011 and used it until early 2023, then the GPU failed for the second time, which requires the logic board to be replaced. It’s a known hardware flaw which will impact all 2011 MBP models with a discrete GPU.

A big difference between running/promoting your own projects vs paying external developers of FOSS software the company uses/depends on.
sumuyuda··on The American economy has left other rich countries in the dust
I’m not for sure what you are trying to say with that statistic, but Switzerland has a much higher percentage of immigrants.

sumuyuda··on AAA Gaming on Asahi Linux
They are using it:

Other than the page size issue, FEX and Rosetta are comparable technologies (both are emulators, despite what Apple marketing might have you believe). Both FEX and Rosetta use the unique Apple Silicon CPU feature that is most important for x86/x86_64 emulation performance: TSO mode. Thanks to this feature, FEX can offer fast and accurate x86/x86_64 emulation on Apple Silicon systems.

sumuyuda··on A subtle change to the iPhone’s contact-sharing permissions
iOS has supported selective contacts since a long time, but companies that want to steal all your contact data don’t use it. Now it seems like they have no choice.

sumuyuda··on We have lift-off Element X, Call and Server Suite are ready
SwiftUI only/iOS 16.4 requirement excludes a lot of older devices.
sumuyuda··on Thoughts on the New iOS Control Centre
I think the reason is Apple wants to make it hard to turn off Wifi, so your device is part of their Find My network and will support other Wifi based data collection they do.

The buttons doesn’t actually turn off Wifi or Bluetooth, they disconnect from the current network/device. This is a huge dark pattern.

sumuyuda··on Shrinking the economy won't save the planet
I think the degrowth discussion is not anti-growth at all costs, but reducing damaging and wasteful production and instead focusing on production that provides social good for humans.

sumuyuda··on Coding on iPad using self-hosted VSCode, Caddy, and code-server
The apple silicon laptops get pretty close to all day battery life with real multitasking. I guess the iPad has a smaller battery, but I would be interested to see how long running macOS on an iPad would last.

Apple could even support switching the iPad into a desktop mode, which would be real macOS. Could be similar to how the Steam Deck switches to KDE.

I suspect the real reason is Apple wants the iPad to remain a consumption device so they can sell you more than one device.

sumuyuda··on A Jenga tower about to collapse: Software erosion is happening all around us
> These outages didn’t happen because developers didn’t test software.

Funny how there is no mention of how modern tech companies offshored/outsourced and even fired manual QA testers. Developers aren’t testers. Do we expect a civil engineer to test the bridge they created before opening it to the public?

Also, with a move fast and break things mentality, stable and quality software went out the window for a continuous release of broken/buggy software.

sumuyuda··on Linux desktop market share climbs to 4.45%
I was a long time Mac user and developer (iOS and macOS) that switched back to Linux after about ten years of using macOS.

The main reasons were mainly getting tired/frustrated at how hostile Apple has been to developers and users. Apple has been slowly turning macOS into iOS, from the UI to slowly trying to lock down the OS. There is also the Apple upgrade treadmill where they force you to upgrade your hardware through planned obsolescence.

sumuyuda··on Apple. Apple Please
The Apple Silicon models still require dongles for USB-A, have no upgradable components, and have terrible repairability. More like a small step forwards, but a long way from the MacBook Pros up to 2012.
sumuyuda··on Opinion: I'd rather have a headphone jack and a microSD slot than AI in my phone
> I got an iPhone instead. Much less user-hostile.

Umm, that’s backwards. You can’t install your own software or unlock the boot loader. As soon as Apple decides the phone is e-waste, you can’t do anything about it unless there is a jailbreak. It just so happens that Apple offers software updates slightly longer than competitors, but this could easily change, as we have seen on macOS where 6 year old Intel macs no longer receive OS support. That is the pinnacle of user hostile.

sumuyuda··on For advertising, Firefox now collects user data by default

sumuyuda··on Apple Users Are Keeping Their Devices for Longer as Upgrades Slow
The problem is apps raising the minimum iOS version. Apple usually doesn’t backport new APIs, so developers are eager to bump it up to use new APIs/frameworks. Similar thing is now happening on macOS. A lot of apps require macOS 11/12, which is pretty crazy compared to how desktop software used to run on much older versions of OSX.
