sumo89··on My next Mac might be the last
Some years ago I bought my first iphone, the 6s. One time I forgot apple password, changed it to something more obscure due to their annoying rules. I promptly forgot that a short while later and had to reset it again to an even more obscure version. After that kept getting prompts to enter it, it felt like almost every time I unlocked the screen I'd have to enter a 10 digit thing with capitals, numbers etc; very annoying on a small phone screen. After about a year or owning the thing and 6 months of having to enter a password 10 times a day I gave up and sold it, never owned an iphone since.

I've still been using macs but rarely ever logging in to the app store. My personal mac recently developed a booting problem so I opened the store to see if there's some software I could download to help diagnose it, of course I've forgotten my password again, couldn't even tell you the last time I entered it. Go to reset it and despite entering a 2fa code from the backup email address and one from my phone via text message, it's going to take 15 days to reset the password. It's frankly ridiculous.

At this point I think I'm done, this will probably be my last macbook outside of oens provided by work.

sumo89··on Observations from our Joe Rogan Experience experience
For someone complaining about the lack of nuance between too black or white you sure are being binary abour this. If someone says a mildly sexist remark, sure - grey area, could be a mistake or it could be they're a dick. But if someone says they support Hitler's ideals that's not just a mistake you can overlook.
sumo89··on In search of Britain’s oldest pub
As someone that grew up in York I was surprised to not see any mentions of buildings from there. There's quite a lot of buildings from around 1500 but most current day pubs seem to be in buildings that started at houses or commercial properties.
sumo89··on Edible insects role in transmission of parasitic diseases to humans (2019)
As an owner of a reptile this study has another angle for me. The insects tested are all classic reptile food and aside from some creatures being illegal to import or breed the production and selling of edible insects for animals seems pretty unregulated. Every producer claims their bugs are all parasite free so seeing ~80% actually do have parasites is alarming.
sumo89··on Fake Dog for Home Security
Also if you have a Dangerous Dog signand your dog does then injure someone it's clear you knew the dog could cause damage. There was the case recently, Jacqueline Durand, who went to dog sit, opened the door and got attacked by 2 pitbulls. The owners tried to argue their dogs weren't violent despite the attack but the fact they had a sign up was one of the major points against them and was included specifically in the lawsuit.
sumo89··on Fake Dog for Home Security
I grew up with 2 labradors that were huge attention seekers. One worked out how to open the back gate and if he escaped he knew we'd find him in a certain retired neighbours garden getting strokes and biscuits. That said, one time someone did break in to our house and the labs kept them pinned by the front door until the police arrived.
sumo89··on Fake Dog for Home Security
I've the same about the Netherlands. Everyone knows it's a country with huge bicycle ownership and use, then later people discover it also has huge bicycle theft. From talking to people that have lived there, anecdotally all the theft is drunk or mistaken "borrowing".
sumo89··on Ask HN: Why do companies not list your weaknesses in rejection emails?
Giving a reason will give the person a point to dispute. I used to work in customer service dealing with applications to join a membership website. Without fail if I told the person the reason they were declined they would argue against it. You're never going to change your mind so arguing is pointless. Much easier to say you weren't successful without specifics.

sumo89··on Ask HN: Heavy Metal Music for Programming?
I like to listen to doom/stoner metal because it's not too distracting and usually minimal lyrics. Sleep, Slugdge, Bongripper, Elder, Electric Wizard etc. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/37i9dQZF1DXdpVGstUksUC?si=...
sumo89··on U.S. eliminates human controls requirement for fully automated vehicles
Where's that video of the guy's dash cam showing what full autonomous driving in a Tesla is currently like, the one where it keeps trying to drive him head first in to other vehicles. I'm hoping this is just intended for on-campus shuttles or something.
sumo89··on Slack System Status

sumo89··on Colors in movies and TV: What happened to them?
Video games used to have this problem really bad as well as so much overuse of bloom. There was a few years where every big budget game looked like it had a brown filter on the screen. People have speculated it was used to much to try and hide bad graphics but I get the feeling it was more of a fashion thing. Luckily it seems to be going away recently.
sumo89··on MDMA reopens child-like “critical periods” in the brain
“Critical periods are periods of time, usually during development, where the brain is extremely sensitive to the outside world and the ecologically relevant cues that it needs to learn from,”

I must have learnt so much about drum & bass

sumo89··on Squatters in Spain who demand a "ransom" before they will leave a property
It's not just that the courts are bogged down meaning people can take advantage of the slow eviction process. A lot of places have a growing housing crisis, Barcelona especially, meaning there's a lot of people struggling to afford rentand being forced to look at less legal means of living in the city.

sumo89··on I went to the office for the first time. I fucking hated it
For all the upsides of working remotely and especially for 100% remote I think the downside is it can become very transactional. Write code for x hours, the clock ticks to 6pm and you leave to do something else. I'm not saying everyone has to have a great passion for their work and ultimately we're all doing it to put food on the table but it seems to me that it's a recipe for becoming disillusioned with it all. You don't have to be great friends with your colleagues but if you're enjoying your work or the atmosphere of work, having a chat to people over lunch, going to pub every now and then, the odd team pizza trip or whatever, then after 10 years you may still be enjoying it. At the very least it breaks up the days so they aren't all the same. But clocking on at 9am to write code for 8 hours while talking to a moving image of someone's face once a day is a recipe for hating it in the long term.

Easily the most frequent and interesting/meaningful updates for any Kickstarter that I've backed before.

sumo89··on A Follow-Up to “Location-Based Pay”
I'm about 12 months away from leaving London, Leeds is the goal. It has a decent enough tech economy that I should be able to find an equivalent job for little to no pay cut and cost of housing/living is significantly lower.

It's probably partially my age but I know a lot of people who are on the verge of leaving, partially due to remote working opportunities from Covid but mostly due to being priced out. Even those I know staying "in" London are having to buy in Essex, Hertfordshire etc. due to the cost. London's housing crisis is only getting worse every year, in enough time the upside may be that it helps other cities develop instead.

sumo89··on How I survive 12 hour flights
To all those monsters taking a big mac with them on the plane: buy a sandwich in a packet like a normal person.
sumo89··on How I survive 12 hour flights
"* Bring a pair of socks only for the flight, and throw them away afterwards (Uniqlo has decent ones that aren't too pricy). The bathroom floors get so sticky after 10 hours."

Or just put your shoes back on to walk to the bathroom

sumo89··on Segway ends production of its original scooter
That's the key here, there is absolutely a market for the Segwey product, it's just not the one the Segwey company was aiming for.
sumo89··on The myth of the developer that can't code
"I went job hunting last year, and what I was really looking forward is technical interviews - PLEASE just challenge me, allow me to show you my work instead of my CV"

I totally agree. I hate the irony of having a highly technical job but then needing some decent writing skills to put together a CV that isn't just a list of employers, dates and acronyms.

sumo89··on How SEO Ruined the Internet
I agree, it's easy to hate on the current system and I think the ads are getting way too similar to the real results now. But all those websites that have a massive list of names/place at the bottom just to come higher up the search, that was the real worst time. When you'd search "Handyman in Leeds" and the top results would be for a company that isn't even in the right location but was big enough to list highly and had "Handyman in Leeds" in hidden text at the bottom of the page.
sumo89··on If you imagine a business making surgical facemasks is working 24/7, guess again
That is an awful website for people in the EU. 4 different pop ups then 20 seconds after page load a final one saying you can't read the page outside the USA.
sumo89··on Billionaire bunkers: How the 1% are preparing for the apocalypse (2019)
If it's the nuclear apocalypse then just accept your fate. A bunker will just prolong the pain. However if it's something like a global pandemic and you don't want to encounter any other people for a while, then I'd much rather own a resort on a Caribbean island or the like.

sumo89··on One Question You Should Never Ask Your Boss
What grade A bullshit. Proper Linkedin fodder.
sumo89··on DevDegree: Work at Shopify and get a free CS degree in parallel
I don't have the amount of debt that you do but I also did a career change after some years of doing dead end jobs. I have the same feeling that I wish this was an option for me when I was looking to start university but I'm also aware I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life when I was 18. Chances are I would do these 4 years then decide I want to be a sky diving instructor or something instead.
