sumo89··on Trump wins presidency for second time
You're complaining about how Trump was presented as a threat to democracy after he made a speech saying how if he wins you'll never have to vote again? After he lead an insurrection and tried to illegally overthrow the previous election both on paper and in person?

Seen a good few Trumpers complaining about the label "far right". If you don't like the label that's on you, it's like an orange complaining about being called an orange, it's a fact.

sumo89··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Not just generic oligarchs but specifically Fox.
sumo89··on Former President Trump is projected to win the presidency
Are you forgetting the whole removing classified documents and storing them in your club house thing?
sumo89··on Lost Silk Road Cities Discovered High in the Mountains of Central Asia
Contesting the name based on silk not necessarily being the main cause for people to travel that way feels needlessly obtuse, exactly the kind of minor point scoring some people love when no one else cares.

My other half is a non-native English speaker. She's fluent but and since ChatGPT came out she's found it very helpful having somewhere to paste a paragraph and get a better version back rather than asking me to rewrite things. That said, she'll often message me with some text and I've got a 100% hit rate for guessing if she's put it through AI first. Once you're used to how they structure sentences it's very easy to spot. I guess the hardest part is being able to prove it if you're in a position of authority like a teacher.
sumo89··on Grandmaster expelled from team chess championship after phone found in toilet
I don't play chess and have never used chess.com, what's to stop someone playing on their PC and using an app on their phone to prompt their next move? I guess their anti cheat can't be like video game DRM but how do you declare someone's moved to be cheating without proving they're using a 3rd party?
sumo89··on European govt air-gapped systems breached using custom malware

sumo89··on Ask HN: What book had a big impact on you as a child or teenager?
The His Dark Materials was probably the first books I got really in to and some of the only books I've ever re-read. I read a couple of others by the same author but wasn't grabbed as much. I think I was around 13 at the time. Harry Potter were probably some of the first "long" books that I ever read but I wasn't a huge fan and gave up by the third. I'd say those along with random Discworld and assorted fantasy books planted the seeds of enjoying reading but it did go hand in hand with sitting next to my mum and enjoying the experience. Taking a book on holiday and sitting in the sun reading rather than just playing on my gameboy, which happened too but without bans on screen time more like just encouragement to join in the reading activity. Maybe bad battery lives and non-backlit screens helped too. One book that's always stuck in my memory since is Freakonomics. I read it when I was a teenager and the very logical thinking hit a real nerve. I know the book has had controversy since but I can't say I took away any specific example of "Sumo wrestlers like to cheat" or whatever, but the way of thinking it encouraged has definitely stuck with me. My partner read some Malcolm Gladwell books when she was younger and she was definitely a fan for a similar reason. I think they're a load of tosh with generous leaps of logic but I can understand the appeal of something that encourages you to look beyond the obvious.
sumo89··on US man jailed for cloning giant sheep for trophy hunting
The saddest part is if you image search "Marco Polo argali" it's a wall of hunters posing with dead ones and right in the first paragraph on wikipedia is "Their conservation status is "near threatened" and efforts have been made to protect their numbers and keep them from being hunted"
sumo89··on Cyberpunk books that revolutionized the genre
I've just ordered Titanium Noir, reviews online look really good too. Thanks for the recommendation.
sumo89··on Cyberpunk books that revolutionized the genre
Ready Player One is not a good book. It starts with an interesting premise then devolves in to a competition for how many 80s references it can fit in each sentence.
sumo89··on 2026 Kia EV3 First Drive Review: More Like This, Please
Really? I own a Niro and I'm 6''. Even in the back there's plenty of room. My only slight wish is the steering wheel could be adjusted further backwards but in the couple of years ownership we've done many 6+ hour drives without issue.
sumo89··on Intel Honesty
I'm sure all the points are correct but the assessment for ways forward being to just use TSMC as the manufacturer completely ignores the somewhat perilous position Taiwan is in with a looming Chinese invasion. I'd be very reluctant to tie the future of my business to the fates of a company that may become state property within a year or two.
sumo89··on How Olympics officials try to catch “motor doping”
The UCI banned some handlebars that were regarded as too far forward, they've banned elbows being too high, they've banned handlebars pointing slightly inwards. They'll ban anything that's even slightly out the ordinary and with no reasons given.
sumo89··on Show HN: DualShock calibration in the browser using WebHID
"I noticed that many repair technicians were using my scripts to recalibrate controllers, which significantly reduced repair times and costs. However, many of them were also having a tough time setting up the environment to run the scripts: Python, libusb, Windows drivers, and all that complicated stuff: the user experience was completely off.

This led me to the idea of creating a multiplatform web UI that could simplify everything. I developed a prototype and shared the link on a Facebook group for repair technicians, where it was warmly (..really warmly!) received."

That's so wholesome. Other people would have seen their software being used and decided they should be turning a profit from it.

sumo89··on DIY Home EV Charger
Sample of 1 but yeah we have a plug in hybrid and and waterproof socket in the storm porch, the car charges in a few hours. No desire to spend nearly 1k to charge a bit quicker
sumo89··on The Last of the Fungus
Totally aside from the point of the article I noticed he used the phrase "I played Cassandra". Can anyone tell me what this means? Searching brings up nothing.
sumo89··on Ask HN: What's the coolest physical thing you've made?
Not nearly as cool as most responses but the other day I re-hung our house's back door as the hinge had snapped. I had to chisel new slots for the bigger hinges in the frame and the door. No way as neat as a proper carpenter would do but very satifying especially when you open and close the door for the first time and it doesn't catch the frame and the lock still lines up.
sumo89··on Titanic tourist sub photos show wreckage being brought ashore
The only way the carbon tube hasn't turned to sea dust is if the porthole failed first. When carbon fibre fails it catastrophically fails. I'd put money on the joint between the ti and carbon being the weak point and once there's a chip in the carbon under that much pressure it'll disintigrate.
sumo89··on Ask HN: Which book has had the most meaningful contribution in your life?
My logical connections are looking at your comment history and seeing you supporting Trump and distrusting vaccines so I think the reddit piss drinking analogy works best here. I'm out.
sumo89··on Ask HN: Which book has had the most meaningful contribution in your life?
"It is a part of normal conversation to call out empty virtue signalling when observed. Ironically, deflecting discussion by labeling it as "X-like" (where, in this case, X=Twitter) instead of providing real arguments is exactly what a typical Twitter shitposter would do. "

Mate, you need to check yourself. Read the context of my original post, maybe even click the link and have a look at some of the studies. If that passes you by then maybe this isn't the place for you.

sumo89··on Ask HN: Which book has had the most meaningful contribution in your life?
Cis means I identify now as I did when I was born. I was born male and still identify as male. As such I haven't had the struggles of someone who has had to discover their identity.

"Low effort social grift", sorry I thought we were in a place of normal conversions with like minded nerds, I didn't realise this was actually twitter.

wifi dongles aren't exactly bullet proof. For example if you use a cycling turbo trainer with a power meter, a macbook and an ANT+ (2.4ghz) dongle there's a good chance you've had to buy a 6 foot extender cable so get the dongle far enough away from the macbook because something about the macbook itself interferes with the signal. It's a known thing among home training cyclists.
sumo89··on Ask HN: Which book has had the most meaningful contribution in your life?
As a white CIS male from a middle class family in Western Europe I've found it eye opening reading studies and articles based around global gender studies. For example the journal Gender, Place and Culture https://genderplaceandculture.wordpress.com/. It's an analytical window to a world that would otherwise pass me by and has helped me be more empathetic to the struggles that of those born in different situations.

sumo89··on Why do recipe writers lie about how long it takes to caramelize onions? (2012)
I've inherited an 80's Good Housekeeping cookbook. Some recipes are very dated but it goes in to detail on all the techniques needed for each dish including a lot of things people did more of back then like breaking down a whole bird from scratch.
sumo89··on Meta stops offering remote work in new job postings
The place I work for hasn't fully embraced remote for in house staff, since lockdowns it's now 2 days a month in the office but we have hired an agency to help with an app rebuild. We've got 5-6 people from the agency working from Spain, Hungary, Poland and the UK and they're brilliant. Really knowledgable about our specific niche with loads of experience in related areas. I have no idea how we'd find people this good in the UK let alone ones tied to commute distance of the office.

I can only assume the huge companies like Meta are wanting to reduce HR overhead of dealing with different countries and states employment laws, taxes etc.

sumo89··on Windows needs to stop showing tabloid news
I use my PC infrequently, just for video games when I get time. It feels like every time I turn it one, maybe once a month, it's done an update to somehow look worse and worse. One of the latest changes is the search bar in the menu bar now has scroll icons and is double height despite being empty. It's like they don't do visual QA.
sumo89··on The sinister attempts to ‘decolonise’ mathematics
Weird to see a right wing opinion piece posted on hacker news, even weirder to see the only downvoted comments are ones pointing out the reputation and editorial style of The Spectator. That of being a wordy Dail Mail. Maybe Hackernews has become too mainstream.
