sumitgt··on Pebble Round 2
There's a ton of apps and watchfaces on the Pebble that show the weather
sumitgt··on May 5, Microsoft's Skype will shut down for good
Why not just use something like Google Meet? You send a link and the other person just needs a browser.

It's a pain to deal with syncing issues on Signal Desktop.

sumitgt··on Meta outage
Could be an outage in the auth service itself
sumitgt··on Exway doesn't care about USB-C conformity
Reminds me of issues I had with the Wahoo Elemnt Bolt bike computer:

For some weird reason it cannot charge if you plug the other end of the USB-C cord to a Apple made charger. It works with all other USB-C wall bricks.

Never understood what that was about

sumitgt··on HDR QR Code
Given the popularity of QR codes now, I wonder if it makes sense for it to just be supported directly in HTML as a type of element.

<qrcode>Some content!</qrcode>

With necessary browser/device level support to automatically do this HDR thing.

sumitgt··on Tiny, cheap smart speakers unlocked the rise of digital payments in India
UPI support for non-residents has been announced, but not sure of the timeline.
sumitgt··on Cyclists now outnumber motorists in City of London
I would personally bike more often to more places if only there was some way to securely park my bike at the destination (grocery stores, restaurants, etc.).

The only place I can reliably bike to at the moment is my office which has a secured bike parking.

sumitgt··on Client-side encryption for Gmail in Google Workspace is now generally available
It’s in the references below the blog post

sumitgt··on Golink: A private shortlink service for tailnets
Take documents for example. You can have go/feature1-design-doc that points to a Google doc with the design discussion for feature 1.

No need to find it on Google Drive (where the title may or may not follow consistent patterns) or remember which of the many Google doc links in autocomplete is the correct one.

sumitgt··on Tailscale Funnel
This.

You can anyways access Jome Assistant over tailscale without all this.

I think there is even a Tailscale addon for HA.

sumitgt··on Meta fires a software engineer two days after he relocated from India to Canada
> and all if his shares vest immediately

I don't think so. I believe they only get the November 15, 2022 vesting.

sumitgt··on Meta lays off 11,000 people
On the day after the US election as well. Great way to avoid making the headlines.
sumitgt··on Bike: Innovative Rich Text Editing
Brilliant work! Wish I was a Mac user.

For the hyperlinks, it seems editing the text and visiting the link is easy. But there isn’t a way to edit the hyperlink itself quickly?

Have you considered using affinity cursor along the up/down for that as well? Eg. Up updates the hyperlink content while default/down updates the link text.

Not sure how it would work out UX wise. Maybe opens up a popover with cursor for the hyperlink.

sumitgt··on Ask HN: How do we convince all hotels to just provide free WiFi, no passwords?
Hmm. How would this work for regular non-tech savvy users?

I doubt regular customers know what a MAC address is.

sumitgt··on Passkeys.io – A Passkey Authentication Demo
It supports multiple user names. From what I've seen in screenshots it shows a picker to select the account you want if there are multiple applicable.
sumitgt··on Ubuntu 22.10 Kinetic Kudu
Agreed!

Snap can't even update snap-store because it is running in the background.

There is no way for a non-tech savvy person to even figure out how to get past that error.

sumitgt··on Apple Watch Ultra
ANT+ support comes to mind
sumitgt··on Raindrop: All-in-One Bookmark Manager
Is there a way to export data in some viable format?
sumitgt··on Apple, Google and Microsoft Commit to Expanded Support for FIDO Standard
I've actually put my Yubikeys through worse. They've always survived :)

These were the larger ones. Not sure how the smaller "nano" ones would perform.

sumitgt··on Ask HN: Have you created programs for only your personal use?
I wanted to record Jeopardy everyday.

A Tivo subscription was too expensive, so I built my own DVR software to record from Locast. Worked like a charm until Locast shut down.

I had to replace it with a bunch of cron jobs + shell scripts which record using a local TV antenna connected to a NUC.

Puts out nice little mp4 files into a NFS which I can access anywhere in the world over Tailscale.

sumitgt··on The United States Digital Corps
Unfortunately both this and USDS require the applicant to be a US Citizen.

I wish there was a similar option for folks who are not yet citizens but currently work in the US tech industry (maybe in exchange for some sort of a streamlined path to citizenship).

Similar to the (now paused) MAVNI program.

sumitgt··on Pixel prevented me from calling 911
I believe that permission is only needed for the Find My App itself (so that it can display the map correctly centered w.r.t where you are).

I don't think it affects finding that device from other devices.

sumitgt··on WhatsApp – About multi-device beta
I'm already able to use it on the iPad.

Just went to web.whatsapp.com and made it a home screen shortcut in Safari.

sumitgt··on Initial M1 support merged into Linux SoC tree
Even on a Dell XPS Developer Edition (that comes with Linux) I can't get the webcam to use the full resolution or get bluetooth audio to work reliably.

So I get where folks are coming from.

sumitgt··on India accounts for 11 per cent of global death in road accidents: World Bank
Yup, the DMV point especially resonates with me.

When I got my driver's licence, the only thing they verified was that I could put the car in gear and drive it in a straight line a couple of meters.

Was glad to have a thorough driver's test when I moved to the US.

sumitgt··on Giving More Time for Our Recent Update
Yes, I am confused as well.

Something has to have changed or else they wouldn't need people to accept new terms right?

sumitgt··on Are the dead taking over Facebook?
It is really nice that Facebook provides the "memorial" feature. Some important sites like LinkedIn lack this.

I often get notifications asking me to "Congratulate ___ on completing 3 years at ___" when I know that the person has passed away.

sumitgt··on Firefox Send: Free encrypted file transfer service
It would be really amazing to build some sort of integration in commonly available WiFi connected scanners and printers.

Currently, my scanner conveniently sends me emails with scanned documents. But I have not insight into how they actually store and delete the document on the backend.

Would be great if the scanner had the option to upload to Firefox Send and show me a QR code to download it on other devices.

sumitgt··on Lyft’s IPO disclosure shows it’s not close to profitability
I think it's just part of the blitzscaling process.
