"The bounty is more a way of saying "thanks!", of buying someone a coffee for their help, rather than paying them for their work."

This usually works when the guy giving the bounty is not just another random guy on the internet.

suhastech··on Show HN: I'm 14, I learned Objective-C, and this is my first iPhone game
Congrats to the OP!

Of course, there's always the birth lottery for most people reminiscing here. For people coming from the third world, this kind of a feat would be very rare to come by and won't be appreciated even if they do, as they are still tackling lower level problems. Heck, my parents don't even know I do on the computer. From where I come from, good grades are the best thing a kid could show to their parents.

suhastech··on How we got a Y Combinator interview but blew it
Every solution has a free and open source implementation.

It's like saying I'll bake a cake at home with the free and open source implementation available online instead of buying it from the store.

It about how much you weigh your time and the quality of your product.

Of course, there are exceptions, the cake you buy from the store might be bad but, that's unlikely if you buy from a reputed store.

suhastech··on Don't Worry About Your Productivity, Worry About You
For good or bad, I can't express how much of changed person I'm due to Hacker News. It has taught me to question dogma wherever I can, that has given me a better understanding of how the world works, in other words, getting the birds eye view seat of the world.

So, at my current standing, procrastination is good.

Or quite simply, as they say "too much of everything is bad" applies to procrastination and everything in general.

suhastech··on Show HN: idea for the future of document editing

If you go on tracing the "meaningful" work you've been doing all this time, you'll probably end up with something leisurely. This is just very close to that, seeming "meaningless".

Let's face it, most of the work we do is an effort to improve and/or increase your leisure time.

Think about it.

suhastech··on How To Die With No Regrets
In my opinion, whatever decision you make definitely has its pros and cons. I find no exceptions.

I simply see the good that has happend due to that decision and fell good at that moment. http://sivers.org/horses

It's the most unexpected things that gives us happiness and by defination, we have little control over that.

suhastech··on Learn to code, get a job.
I don't think "front-end" development can be learnt methodologically. I'm assuming that front-end development ties in a bit of design skills to really make it effective.

I'm a backend guy myself. I'm probably good at thinking up nice UI, coding it with CSS or Interface Builder. In real life they somehow don't seem right. I'm not sure. I guess I need to delve a little bit more into design theory?

That said, there are some proven textbook recipes for front end development that mostly works.

suhastech··on Show HN: Formly - Online Form Builder for Mobile Data Collection
I do appreciate the very well thought of web application. I most definitely like it.

I have experienced the pain point but, it seems a wee bit simple to shell out $50/month. I could just install Wordpress (quoting it for it's simplicity) with Gravity Forms or cForms on a cheapo $5 PHP host.

Don't forget the number of people.
suhastech··on India outsourcing back to USA
I think with the advent of the internet, the disparity in the world economy is being normalised. In India, just 6-7 years back, $200/month was a good salary where one could lead a a happy life. Nowayadays, $1000/mo is fairly manageable (still very low compared to world standards). Inflation is up, living standards is improving, costs have risen and so are the income expectations. So, this might not be surprising.

Just my thoughts.

I mean, look at the guy. Even if all the things he was trying for failed, he could still get a great job as his last choice.
suhastech··on Wikipedia Redefined
Extend the same argument. They probably said 'fuck you, we're going English for Wikipedia' instead of Enzyklopädie or whatever like every other recognizable brand worldwide.

Let's face it, English is the universal language.

I'm doing all of that probably more than most of my peers but that makes me question the core values of a college education.

Low Cost, Connections, Visa stuff are a few reasons I'm still sticking on to it. All of them are not core to college. I think this is something that needs to be fixed before people lose faith.

At times, I feel I'm wasting time on coursework (around 9 hours a day) but I somehow convince myself that I'm not experienced enough to judge.

suhastech··on What I've Learned About Learning
>My weakness is thinking that when I first grasp an idea, I think I'm done.

I must admit that this is what I've been doing all in this time. Maybe because of the Hubris mentioned in the article and limited experience, I believe that it is still might be the better way. You are welcome to disagree. Here's an unorganized mess of what I think:

1) Making mistake is the whole point. At the point where you make a mistake, is where you learn about it most effectively. Reading in depth doesn't give you that experience and its boring. :/ http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/radical-teaching/200905/...

2) There's just so much to learn. When the time calls for you to apply your knowledge, if you have the big idea (or vague if you want to call it) of many things, you can decide most effectively which branch to go deeper into at that particular field. Might also be interpreted as making more mistakes in that field. That's why, experience is weighed more than education.

After few of those encounters, I think you will tend to become an "expert". Probably is the reason why hobby projects are quite healthy to have such encounters.

“An expert is a man who has made all the mistakes which can be made, in a narrow field.” – Niels Bohr

A bit off topic:

I think I'm pretty much in the same situation as Nafis. I'm majoring in Electronics and have a passion for computers.

Only difference is, tuition is quite cheap here in India (around $5000 for 4 years). So, small freelancing projects help me sustain.

Though the quality of education here is questionable. One year into college, all I have learnt is * Stuff as much portions you can during the term * Write the exact things from the textbook on your exam * Forget or vaguely remember it in the holidays

That's not really what I hoped for. Hopefully, it gets better over the years...

suhastech··on OS X Mountain Lion available on the Mac App Store
I'm confused.

It says ¥128.00 there. So, I checked google http://www.google.com/search?q=%C2%A5128.00+in+usd

That's less than $2 or I must be mistaken.

suhastech··on Tech press misses Google/Amazon name grab
I think they should be only allowed to grab they trademark domains. (.amazon, .google)

Anything generic should be allowed to the public. Maybe the rights to sell can be sold a company.
