subpixel··on Joby kicks off NYC electric air taxi demos with historic JFK flight
This is like a person-sized Roomba. Even if it might work, within certain strict constraints, it's essentially unnecessary.
subpixel··on Friendster Relaunch
I went home from a bar in 2003 knowing only the first name of a wonderful girl I chatted with that night, and thanks to Friendster I was able to locate her in a city of over 8MM people and find a way to contact her. We are married with a family now.
subpixel··on YouTube users get option to set their Shorts time limit to zero minutes
Update: watching YT in a browser on iOS is completely enshittified. I am giving up and actually looking into sideloading an app that kills shorts.
subpixel··on Meta tells staff it will cut 10% of jobs
The disappointment needs to be directed at Craigslist, which sat on its hands and let FB eat their lunch.

And while FB marketplace search kinda sucks the algorithm is supremely effective at surfacing listings based on your searches and activity.

subpixel··on Meta tells staff it will cut 10% of jobs
Stealing an idea is different from lying to people in order to steal their actual business, which is more like what Zuckerberg did.
subpixel··on Meta tells staff it will cut 10% of jobs
If you consider Marketplace its own product it’s a massive win but they haven’t monetized it beyond some very ineffective post boosting and advertising. I honestly think they could charge 10% of list price for items over $50, plus membership levels that reduce or remove listing fees. and make a significant amount of money.
subpixel··on Show HN: boringBar – a taskbar-style dock replacement for macOS
Came to request the auto-hide feature as well!
subpixel··on North American English Dialects
Really hard-core, old-school Charleston accent missing: https://youtu.be/rxNZrFyl2DA?si=VV7OWi-fY2m3twIA&t=1835
subpixel··on Darkbloom – Private inference on idle Macs
Why isn’t a MacBook Air M5 on the hardware list?
subpixel··on YouTube users get option to set their Shorts time limit to zero minutes
I know what you mean, but I am willing to lose that content, in that form. Similar to the way I have used Instagram for a decade but have no idea what a reel is and ignore them.
subpixel··on YouTube users get option to set their Shorts time limit to zero minutes
I've deleted the app from my phone. When I want to watch YT I open Brave, which blocks shorts and promoted videos in search. As an added benefit watching videos feels like a slight chore and is not frictionless.

On my Mac I also use Brave and have allowlisted only the YouTube domain and Google auth. No shorts, no search spam, and just slightly inconvenient.

subpixel··on Ask HN: Any interesting niche hobbies?
I have done similar grafting experiments, although at present I am navigating a change in motivation. I got into apples through cider, but gave up alcohol this year. (As an aside, this was a long time coming and absolutely worth some small sacrifices!)

While I’m interested in heritage apples, I think it’s probably more important to find and cultivate wild apples showing attributes that can keep them hardy in 21st century climate. An apple that thrived over a century ago depended on conditions that are different today and are continuing to change.

subpixel··on Friendica – A Decentralized Social Network
More importantly I feel like federation is a reaction to a problem small social networks don’t have.

I want a Tumblr for just people I know. I don’t want it to metastasize and interact in any way with people I don’t know.

subpixel··on My MacBook keyboard is broken and it's insanely expensive to fix
You’re underestimating the probability of multiple things needing attention over 5-7 years.

That is baked into the price of AppleCare just like any insurance premium.

I definitely think coverage should be free for 2 years though.

subpixel··on Personal Encyclopedias
That’s the direction this developer went in but I think you could also go in a more personal direction and leverage automation where it’s effective but avoid all generative text.
subpixel··on Personal Encyclopedias
Not uncomfortable just deeply uninterested. I’m into preserving family stories - I’m not into the navel-gazing that is all manner of ‘quantified self’ endeavors
subpixel··on The Story of Marina Abramovic and Ulay (2020)
You’re not wrong in general but I happen to be dead serious. I’m a little closer to the art world professionally than many, YMMV.
subpixel··on Having Kids (2019)
This amounts to “works on my machine”.

I’m happy for you, but your circumstances are unusual and incomparable to most.

subpixel··on The Story of Marina Abramovic and Ulay (2020)
For decades, I have successfully used reverence for Marina Abramovic as an attribute to filter out persons with whom I am incompatible.
subpixel··on The Los Angeles Aqueduct Is Wild
Reminds me of when I was talking to friends about the film Chinatown and I referred to it as a movie about the California water war and someone else said “dude, that’s not what that film is about”.

We were both correct.

subpixel··on Claude Code: Channels
This is exactly what I planned to figure out how to do: maintain an instance of Claude that can accept triggers that become tasks.
subpixel··on Afroman found not liable in defamation case
I haven’t found any information about what cause the police had, why a warrant was issued, etc.

I’m not suggesting suspicion has merit, but given all the idiocy I’m wondering what other forms of chicanery may have taken place to get a warrant.

subpixel··on Silicon Valley's "Pronatalists" Killed WFH. The Strait of Hormuz Brought It Back
I don't disagree that parents should just roll around on the floor with their child until age three. My creditors feel otherwise, I presume.
subpixel··on 'The Secret Agent': Exploring a Vibrant, yet Violent Brazil (2025)
Quality is not really near the top of Oscar eligibility criteria now, is it?
subpixel··on Silicon Valley's "Pronatalists" Killed WFH. The Strait of Hormuz Brought It Back
Actually paying someone to take care of your child 7-5 is easier, it's just wildly unaffordable and therefore less attractive.
subpixel··on Beyond has dropped “meat” from its name and expanded its high-protein drink line
The beyond patties at Costco are a decent price. Standard retail prices are not so great.

I like em but I think the idea of them being somehow premium doesn’t translate.

subpixel··on Show HN: DD Photos – open-source photo album site generator (Go and SvelteKit)
I’m assuming the build step doesn’t resize images that have already been processed. Other than that this approach seems to handle plenty of images per album. Albums are a UX principle, so they shouldn’t be very big anyway.
subpixel··on The Gervais Principle, or the Office According to “The Office” (2009)
As the essay points out, we losers have only two paths out of loserdom. The first is to leverage sociopathic tendencies, to scheme and maneuver and accrue power (probably as a minion to an actual sociopath, I don’t think transformation happens except at the early stage of a career). The second is to check out and coast, tacitly improving our position without actually striking a new bargain or finding any safety.

My own losing trap, which I think is common, is to try to periodically make sense of the organization and map a logical path forward for myself. This never works. My career progress in the organization has actually come about through sheer accident and/or lucky association.

subpixel··on Show HN: DD Photos – open-source photo album site generator (Go and SvelteKit)
This is really great. At first it seems a tad over-engineered but I admit the state of the art has progressed since the days of using Yeoman to scaffold a Jekyll site. Also the fact that you don’t use Hugo deserves to be congratulated.
subpixel··on MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max
I have a perfectly good 2015 Macbook that can't use Apple's own Password app, presumably hobbled intentionally to make me upgrade.
